Watch Out for the Elitist Posters

Anyone else kind of tired of the "elitist" posters who seem to like to post just to talk down to the person asking the question. This is a basic question forum so yes you will get a lot of repetitive and sometimes dumb questions. The thing I hate though is that people will ask a simple and innocent question and you get the "Guild Wars is about blah, blah, blah and you shouldn't play it because you asked a stupid question" posts. So I decided to post two of the categories of questions that the trollers love to hawk on:

Uber Weapons and Armor - Oh this is a fun one because the Gods of Guild Wars will jump all over you when you ask about getting a really good weapon or armor. They will say something to the effect of "Guild Wars is not about getting Uber weapons and super armor that are better than what others have and you should go and play EQ if you want that." Well actually a part of the game is about getting better weapons and better upgrades. Yes the game relies heavily upon skills and how effectively you use them, but having a good, upgraded weapon and set of armor does help significantly in PvE and PvP so why complain when ppl ask about getting them? GW is great because it is balanced so that similar levels shouldn't have totally imbalanced weapons, but there is nothing wrong with looking for/asking about the next best thing....

Player Names - OMG don't name your character anything other than a totally fantasy-like name! This is a fun game and people want to name their characters something that they like and sometimes want that name to be humorous. If the name is offensive then just report it, but if someone names their character Toll Booth Willie don't get all up in arms because you don't like it. (And yes I used Fantasy Names, but I don't start biting my pillow because someone calls themself Tuggin McGroin.)

Loot in General - God help you if you post a question on where the good loot drops because you want to make some money to buy something in game!!! Face it GW has an economy where prices are high for good items. So when ppl ask where they can find "uber" loot don't start up with the whole GW isn't about that crap.

Just in general to me Guild Wars is about whatever I want to make of it. Sometimes I like to try and farm for good items and sometimes I like to try and sell stuff to make money to buy a cool item or just to see how much I can get in my account. (I used to love just trading on other games I have played). I would say that before you start bitching at someone because you think the game is about one thing you think about what might be enjoyable for the person asking the question. The things you enjoy in the game might be entirely different than what they enjoy.

On a side note: I also hate people who make long posts about other people who complain like this one. God I am so self-loathing :P

ANNOUNCEMENT: A must read!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There has been a sudden increase in spam and it is rather depressing to witness. Hence, from this point on those caught writing posts with no true purpose beyond getting their post count up will be given a warning, after five warnings the person in question will be banned. Warnings will be directed by PM. We want the forum to be a great place for people to discuss and educate themselves, this is not possible if every second poster makes no effort in progressing the discussion. These new strict regulations are being implemented to benefit the intellectual integrity of the community.

Examples of spam posts: “Yeah me too, lol”, “That’s what I wanted to say…”, “What the guy above said…”, etc.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to PM me, I'd be glad to help.

Furthermore, the Q&A forum features slightly tighter rules:
Thread title must be on topic. "help plz" or "Im a nooob!" will be locked on sight
No excessive puncutation or attempts at attracting attention. ?!?!?!?!? or !!!!! and related are not allowed.
Our english rules still apply very much so here.
If your topic is not Q&A, it will be locked

Then don't make them. (Note the post above mine please...)

Many of the people here have played during most of the Beta events. It's no surprise that some of us might sound surprised that someone doesn't know certain things about the game. Even still, most of the posts are quite friendly and helpful.

Now, to me, it still seems odd that so many people bought the game expecting it to be yet another "phat-lewt" "uber-level" MMORPG. A minimum amount of reading would have dispelled those disallusions.

But, for the most part, it seems to me that these boards are quite respectable and friendly. Sure, there is the occasional 'elitist' guy posting, but they are quite few and far between. I mean, seriously, have you ever seen the WoW forums? Scary.

I have had a few run ins with people that were not really nice or helpful, but the overall site here is wonderful. As far as people talking down to others, have you ever been anywhere socially? That happens no matter the setting. I am sure that some of what is said is intentionally offensive, because people just HAVE to say the last word in a debate, but not all of the people who ask questions are doing it for learning. Some of you out there are intentionally doing what you do, so if you get shat for it, well, you made your bed, now lay in it.

Why is common sense considered elitist?

I for one am tired of reading the same threads and the same questions again and again. There is no stupid question, but there are quite a lot of lazy posters who don't take the time to search nor to think before posting. It might a good idea to read the board rules...

Thread moved to riverside inn (community discussion).

I've noticed that what a major problem is, instead of just adding to a thread about the same thing, people will post a brand new thread with the same exact thing that has been discussed in other threads. So, if were seeing a "I want rare weapons" thread with 2 posts that has just been created two threads up from a "This game needs rare weapons" thread that has been going on for a while, I think were entitled to get annoyed.

People are also quick to go to insults if they don't agree with someone, and other people are quick to assume that someone arguing their position is automatically being condesending just cuz they don't agree. Every now and then you'll get a good discussion going, but before long it will get lost in the sea of one line insults and new threads about topics being talked about already.

Elitist most often means "someone who disagrees with me". See: Nerfherder, n00b, a$$hat, fanboi, ad nauseum...they can all be defined the same way.

Dry clean only.

It's worth it though, it's very tough to get awesome dirty. And even when you do, it still looks and smells good. That the best part about 100% awesome shirts.

There are an incredible number of people whose sole motivation in playing online games is to lord something over someone else; their level, their gear, their guild, you name it. Griefing people over not knowing something they know is just another form of the same old thing. Rest assured that anyone who needs to brag in a video game to feel special doesn't have much else going for them.

I couldn't agree with you more EvilWizard, the point of an RPG is ROLEPLAYING, so therefore I do want a nice shiny armour and fancy sword, because I want to play a role. Seriously, just because it's more skill based dosen't mean it has to abandon every priciple of what makes RPGs fun.

There is plenty of cool looking armor, and lots of awesome weapons. The esthetics of these items are incredibly pleasing, regardless of the usefulness of said weapons and armor. I mean, come on, there is actually an entire set of armor for each class that does nothing but looks different. And it's freakin' expensive too!

Yes, you will find awesome looking stuff. But will it be uber-strong? Well... no.

Well, since this is turning into another rare weapon argument, I just want to say that you want to keep looking for something with better damage and so forth?

But if you stop gaining hp at level 20, and your weapon gets better...

How long till the GvG matches turn into who can hit each other three times with their uber weapon first?

The only way I could accept new and better weapons is if there becomes new and better armor, or additions to the existing armor to knock those down.

I know, it's starting to sound like a grind, but if they at least stay on the same way they have been doing it, at least it would be a fun grind.
