my base doesn't. we're getting wireless soon though. I'll be back in the states by then.
Anyway, my laptop just freezes.
My laptop is a gaming laptop and I have never had problems running anything
The only thing I have done since I stopped playing was install battlefield 2, vampire:bloodlines, and star war: sith lords:P
Other than that nothing different

I live in Northeastern Japan, and I have been playing GW with no problems for about 3 months now. I often play with my friends from America with no real latency issues.
It sounds like you might be having a problem specific to your computer. I know that you said you haven't had any problems with any other games, but have you tried fiddling with your video drivers?
Sorry if I wasn't much help, I just wanted to let you know it probably isn't related with being in Japan. I hope your problems clear up and that you can get online soon.

ya lineage 2 and city of heroes works
Ok Im gonna try to explain what the problem reminds me of.
When I first bought the game, it ran fine. I did the preorder so it was smooth and clear. Then the next day everyone came in and the game crashed over and over. They immeadiatly start patching like crazy. Now I noticed that if I tried to log in while a patch was being implemented, my laptop would freeze. Also when the server was back up it was do the connecting to arena net and then nothing, as if I had never started the program.
I figured I was behind a firewall so I turned off mcafee, so it turns on but mcafee still asks if I want to allow it access. Which is kinda weird because it's off. Anyway every game has been like that since. I think guild wars had one of those hidden programs they've been sticking in recent games. Like Cossacks II and Battlefield 2 that prevent cheating, but slow your connection and cause screw ups. Even though they don't tell you you are buying it.
So ya, any thoughts? I remember when a buddy of mine was messing with my laptop, I let him borrow it. I come back and he says "Ya I fixed your slow start up" and of course I said "I didn't ask you too" so what he did was remove a bunch of programs from start up. Somehow he managed to remove half of mcafee:P I don't know any other way to explain it and I don't know how to turn it back on
So I don't know if that is causing the problem or not
But ya it could be our bases server. We have such crappy quality. You pay 140 bucks just turn it on and then 60 a month. But we have no choice if we want internet. Everyone says the Yakuza control the telephone companies and make them charge us ridiculous prices. That may be but I think it's more of a location issue:P
Sorry if my sentences don't make sense. I've been taking "don't kill people" pills. I just quit smoking

Actually sybban, there *is* something in neoteo's post that might help you isolate the problem.
"Another very good seting is to have your startup clean , you dont need any of those , after will see a big reboot diference and even in renderings and high cpu usage programs .... go to :
- Start
- Run
and type : MSCONFIG then ok
Go to Startup and clic all checks to blank.
you will have to reboot on this ..."
Before you do this take a screen shot or write down everything that is checked so that you can turn things back on. After everything is disabled see if GW runs (note that since you have a laptop one of the services you disable might be your trackpad software, which you will either have to turn back on or plug in an external mouse).
If after turning it all off GW works, go through the list and look up what the files coorespond to (try Google) and and turn them all on one-by-one until you determine what app was causing the crash.
