By your reasoning, Weezer Blue, it would also go something like this:
GW = free game
Sorrows Furnace = loss of money.
Hmmm...

GW = Free Game. Character Slots = Loss of money. So until Arena.Net starts charging 5 or 10 bucks per character slot, you're screwed, so quit asking for them. |

First of all, it's like the limit of items. You keep what you like to play and delete what you don't. It's pretty hard to constantly play 4 characters without getting a bit confused. Secondly, it forces you to test things out. Say we had 6 slots, we'd have one of each and a variable secondary profession. Would you ever make a new character? No, you'd probably just go to the Desert. This way, it makes people delete characters and cycle through the game, and therefore always having people at each location. Don't get me wrong, I like this idea, but it isn't necessarily the best when you look at it in retrospect. |
I retract nothing! I'm an anti-retractionist! Unretractability, disretractificationism!!!! I still want 1 of each primary and a dedicated PvP slot...
However I would be content with simply a 5th slot added for dedicated PvP
hm... in fact, I'm quite content already but I would just like to be able (in the future) to make a PvP character without killing my PvE characters... and I still want a warrior and a ranger without killing my PvE characters....

Adding character slots takes drive space. While drive space is fairly cheap now, that can still add up with tens, or even hundreds of thosands (talk above is adding between one and four slots) of new characters all having to be backed up, increased failures to administrate, and thing like new machines in the storage network for upkeep. Much of that is not only a decent up front cost but backup and administration os a cost of time. All for pretty much for no return on the investment.
Especially given that they are not deleting inactive characters accounts that would easily cost more than what sorrows furnace did with MUCH less return, I would even guess adding a few slots would give almost no return and a pretty large cost which equals loss.
I'm very much willing to bet that the four character slot decision has a decent portion of it based on costs and the minimum they felt gamers would tolerate. I can run through what it would have costs us to add much less than and it would have been pretty high. Heck, the monthly fee places don't offer *that* much more than four, and many less than poster above want. That *should* tell you something on costs for managing that type of data load.
That being said, adding the ability to purchase more slots would work well and is something they should probably look at. As long as enough people are willing to pay for it I don't see why not, and I'm willing to bet that many are.
Any online game that doesn't have a steady monthly fee has to be very careful in recurring costs. In game terms if you have a permament health degen of 1 you have to constantly be aware of health costs, even small hits to it. If you have a health regen of 1 you can easily ignore small, and even the occasional medium, hit to your health. This is especially true if you go to a degen of 2 - and this can easily largely outstrip enemy damage since it is on all the time. You don't walk around with that vampiric bow all the time do you?

I'd like to point out that I am not a killjoy. I only disagree with the extra characters because I like Guild Wars being free. We tend to take advantage of that. Because it's free, we are going to have to just bear certain aspects of the game even if those aspects are behind par with the rest of the paying MMOG community. By asking for too much, we run the risk of the game developer's deciding that the game is costing them too much. And the only way to counter that (excluding new add ons) would be a monthly fee. Or allowing companies to advertise in-game (Think of the speech during missions; "The undead are defiling everything! Luckily, we can kill them and sit back and sip a nice Pepsi. Because I love Pepsi. It's the best").

As much as I hate to argue against more of everything, I do consider my GW account to be quite a bargain. I'd love another two slots, but to be honest, I don't mind the char limit what with the low cost of entry.
That said, I'd prefer to be able to add characters to my existing account than have to start a whole new account - and such an option should cost less than a whole new account as well, considering I've already purchased the game content.
Finally, I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment that there should be at least one extra slot reserved for PvP. Since I don't use it that often, it feels like a waste for me to start such character in one of my four precious slots.

I kind of find it annoying running into peeps who say they have most skills unlocked. "Great! Can you make us a Ranger/War?" "Sorry, I don't have a ranger primary, All my slots are PvE." Grrrrr. |
5 slots would be nice, and it's hardly asking for much out of A-Net to supply us with (and fast), seeing as how I can't even create a character from each primary profession, as it is.
*Edit*
I take it a few of you are forgetting that GW has promised "updates" on this game, all free of charge? You would think that a perfect update would be to add a single character slot, at the least, without asking players to pay additional money to be allowed such.
Seriously.. the fifth slot would probably encourage alot more PvP, as well, as I am currently in the dilemma of having 4 PvE characters, and only 3 that are PvP-ready. If I had an additional slot, I would split my time between PvE characters and PvP-only characters, almost down the middle.

Since it seems the standard that everyone saves one slot which means that (except for those that don't follow the standard) we only have 3 slots... |

I think that Arena Net should take a road like Final Fantasy 11 does and offer additional slots per account for money. I mean, it would just be a great advantage to them financially if they charged a set fee for each additional slot since so many players, myself included, would pay for it. This route they wind up with happy players and happy employees.
I mean, buying another copy of guild wars I could do but that'd leave me no unlocked skills or items for that other account.
Just an idea.

I would consider purchasing another game if the accounts could be merged, or at a minimum you unlocked skills/upgrades/runes for both accounts.
I would buy an additional slot or two if they were available.
My vote is 2 pvp-only slots, 4 PvE + 2 PvP
PvP only characters would take up less disk space than PvE characters, they all have the same map, no quests, no missions, etc...
Sadly this problem/these solutions have been talked about since at least February (when I found out about GW) but I've never seen any explanation/response from anet...
