Is anyone else tired of netspeak?

/Agreed with the idea that netspeak definitely does suck

Ok with those "lol, wtf, brb, np,cya" just for ease but have a look at locale chan, i never let it open and it's getting worse..when it's not a 2nd trade channel in outposts..it's always the same stuff

etc and u can easily add 200 trade msg in that crap

peope spam wts/wtb in local channels because they realize that no one ever has trade chat open, pretty soon they will be resorting to private msging in-game, which will be even more annoying

i am against MOST leetspeak or whatever you type it as, but i do use some of the useful ones ALOT, like; lol <-- said in earlier post, it's a word of its own now , brb, cya <-- often people have to leave immediately and do not have time to say a full goodbye, lmao <-- another version of lol, IFG, or LFG, but i never put experienced no noobs or any of that ****, because thats degrading the other people and i probably won't be invited. If you really want a group of probably very good people type, message me if you think you aren't that good and we can form group, then show a big smile , thats pretty much the only good ones that should be used

brb is probably the most important, i don't get what some of you people have a problem with this, because, if something in the real world comes up, i.e. for me sometimes i have to take the dog out, i don't have forever to type be right back, because by then, i'll get yelled at by my parents and prolly kicked off the comp, brb is generally used when a situation without previous notice comes up that REQUIRES the persons immediate attention, so if you see someone say, brb, THEN THEY HAVE SOMETHING THAT NEEDS ATTENTION, so don't get pissed at them if they have responsibilities in REAL life...., if they say brb gonna get food, then that would be an excuse, because they can spell that out and then get their food, but for emergencies you don't always have time to type out every single word like a grammar/spell freak

Although "you" instead of "thou" was a form of English rebellion IIRC. The King demanded to be addressed in the plural (i.e. the royal "we") and hence the rebellion was to always use the 2nd person plural instead of the 2nd person singular when addressing /anyone/ (so the king was addressed as he desired, but it wasn't distinct or unique). Thus thee/thy/thou left our language.

I somehow like that more than, "Well, someome made a typo and said 'pwn' instead of 'own' and all well... monkey see, monkey do."

However, my opinions will ultimately have no effect on the course of the language. Hence I might as well bite my lip and just go with the flow on this one. The only upshot is that usually if someone is saying, "Man I'm 1337", I know not to invite them to my PUG, and if they're using complete sentences, they'll get the invite.

The problem is that people seem to push more neurons toward saying something that is harder to type than "new player" or "idiot" because they think, on some subconcsious (not always) level that typing

makes them somewhow super evil geniuses who can walk through walls, dodge bullets, and claim Neo as their father, and the matrix as their mecca.

Problem is, intelligence and being able to make art are not always in tandem.

People type that way for several other reasons, such as:

It annoys others, and they KNOW it does.

It slows down the communication between people who may not talk like that, and they KNOW it does.

It causes misunderstandings, and they KNOW it does.

The point is, ignore tools who act like that, and go on with your day. You cannot EVER hope to stem the tide of the inane and the mundane, but if we're lucky, Anet will put a filter in place and all that SHIT will become replaced with things like "i like twinkies and candycanes" instead of "OMG SUXORS JOO!"

Communication is the key to this game. People that complain about others usually to not make their thoughts well known. It is not that hard to type out full words to make your point. I can undetstand Short Speak like "ya" or "rdy" but this wierd other slang doesn't work for me. You want people to understand you and not frustrate you while playing this game then take the time to TYPE your message.

Also people that start saying "GoGoGo" as soon as I accept an invite I either whisper the leader to kick them or I just drop out any more. They are usually the ones that charge in and bring on the mobs then complain that they were not healed or everyone else is a n00b. I have had it. Now that I am playing a Monk I can and will find a group that will appreciate good team play and sportsmanship.

I never liked chatting and SMS. I think it's an extremely inefficient, slow and unpleasant way of communicating. You only have a very short time to type your thoughts on something as dreadful as a keyboard. And when you're finally done, the other is already talking about another subject. And I'm not even talking about all the typos you always see. I think it's very strange that so many people do it a lot and seem to like it. We haven't got a voice for nothing. It's the best way of communicating (it's possible to use Skype in the background with Guild Wars). I try to avoid chatting as much as possible.

But especially in a fast game environment, it's inevitable that people come up with all sorts of esoteric and exotic abbreviations. It's inevitable. Inherent to something inefficient like chatting. Not that I appreciate words with various numbers and symbols in it. Simply because a lot of normal people don't have a clue what the other is "talking" about. It also looks a bit silly and childish, in my opinion. It's all "monkey language" to me

Seriously though, I think it comes from those who can't type quickly. While I understand that someone who's new to the online world to not have the ability to type as quickly as is required, it's not an excuse to cut short words into shorter strings of alphanumerical characters. If something is too hard, do you practice until you get better, or set your standards low enough so, atleast in your own eyes, you're 'good enough'?

The problem is that they start using it while they're new, and the habit sticks. Either they don't know better, or they pick it up from the 'cool' people, and imitate them. Perhaps if they taught typing from an earlier age, it would stick around. But that's just my theory on where this utterly annoying 'netspeak' comes from.

It annoys the hell out of me too. I sometimes wish I knew how to crack (not to be mistaken with the horribly abused hacking, which annoys me almost as much as this 'netspeak') so I could atleast harm them for being so stupid, even if it couldn't be physically.

Subcultures develop their own jargon and language. It's part of human nature. It helps differentiate those people from others, and provides a sense of community and insulates against "outsiders".

I'm not saying all of these things are good or bad, and there are many studies and books on the subject, far more than could be said here. But it's going to happen, and no one can stop it. =)

l33t-speak is for idiots, whoever uses it or created it is a retard with no life living in his mommies basement playing games all day long. Netspeak is annoying too, but then again sometimes it can be helpful to shorten things out but ROFL and lol are way over used. Don't forget LMAO too... oh and if u say ROFL i doubt it's that funny or you would have actualy gotten on the floor.

Just to insert some history. 1337 speak started waaaaay back when in newsgroups and such by people who were (usually) engaged in some illegal activities (like hacking, phreaking, pirating, etc). Many of these folks were paranoid (and rightly so) that their messages were being scanned by FBI/law enforcement computers and such. These programs were sort of "dumb" text search engines that would look for words like "hack" and if it found one in a message, would flag it and send the message to an agent to review. Hence people started purposely misspelling and typing words to avoid the search. Thus 1337 speak was born.

Years later some kids who don't know the history or use of 1337 speak decided that it looked "cool" to do it. Let's face it, it used to be very cool to be a hacker, and if you couldn't hack, you could still sound like one on the internet. Thus people who didn't know anything started spreading it around.

Anyhow, those sorts of things do have a reason to exist, but their reason is now long gone and they've all moved on... except for some folks who still think it "sounds" cool.

I totally agree. That`s why I NEVER use abbreviations when I play Guild Wars. If I want to sell, I write "i want to sell" If I am looking for a group then I just type it. It is really not that hard.

These 733t, n00b etc. stuff just makes people look like immature morons.
