It would serve no strategic or numerical purpose and for this reason alone I expect a handful of /signed replies and then this thread will be consigned to the third, fourth, fifth and forgotten pages... I like small ideas and this has made me a pessimist when it comes to them o.0 Regardless, this is my suggestion.

I would like to see pets available in the game. I mean exactly that, pets. Not mounts, not battle-companions, not minions, but just pets. Animals that would follow you around everywhere... like Gwens that map with you and enter outposts and towns with you.

All no bigger than what would be considered a real size:

cats
dogs
birds (hawks, parrots, crows)
rats

There could be a variety of pets inspired by (but never limited by) each class.

the game gets laggy enough sometimes with too many people in one district this will just add to the ammount of things that your computer must render and keep track of.

Maybe if this was added you could add an option to enable/diable seeing the pets for those with computers and/or net connections which have troubles with masses of people. That way they wouldn't complain about it killing them, while those with beefy computers and/or net connections can enjoy the useless pets wondering around :P

They definately wouldn't be battle-pets as that's what rangers pets are. However, that doesn't mean that Joe Blow the Warrior/Monk doesn't have this kitty waiting for him back home... Heh. Would just be a nice way of adding something to the game and adding more customization. choose what pet you want.. maybe be able to choose colorings and a "look".. like markings, scarring, etc...

The pet wouldn't add anything really, except for something following you around - make it "gwen" type interaction in that no monsters attack it while it wonders around doing 'pet' things.

exactly... and perhaps they could get scared off during battle. To save confusion (in the case of dogs for example who are as large as some enemies) they could run a significant distance away from battles and then return after battle (the same time span during which you can't ID or salvage). Since they wouldn't aggro it wouldn't matter where they ran as long as it was away from battle.

(this is in the realm of fantasy and speculation, but it might benefit the devs if they happen to read this, like the idea and get an idea of what some people would like to see as benign pets.)

One thing to remember is that just because YOUR computer runs things fine doesn't mean everyone else's computer is as good as or maybe better than yours. Not everyone paying GW has a AMD 64 3000-4000+ or P4 EE+ with 2-3 gig corsair DDR2 ram with dual 6800GT's, etc and so on.

The game is trying to cater and be run by people of all vary'ing computer specs and internet connections. Implementing something that could have a hugely adverse effect of the people playing on lower end computers and/or slower internet connections is NOT something ANet wants to do or probably ever intends to do.

Take a look at the base specs of GW.. P3 800 with 256 MB ram, GeForce 3 or 4+ (or ati radeon 9000) and a 56K modem. They want a huge range of people to be able to play - the game *IS* playable on those lower end specs.

That's why I suggested that if they even consider this idea, they should add an option to disable these "pets" so your computer doesn't see them at all and thus doesn't have to track where they are, display them, etc. Because there are people playing that game with computers and/or net connections which would be hurt if this was added without the ability to turn it off.

As for pets.. DrSLUGFly has basically mentioned everything I could thing about.. one possible expansion/customization of the pets could be that you could select what "breed" they are and have different looks for the different breeds.. ie say they added dogs.. could add a selection of the most common "breeds" for people to select and choose from...
