It matches you up by rating, not by rank. You probably had a small bit of a wait, and 150 or so points difference between your guild and the opposing guild (based on the fact that I've guested against a 4200 guild, and for a 700 ranked guild today). 150 points is a good bit, but the 4200 ranked guild gave us a good fight. 100-150 points isn't unreasonable for the system.
The reason you got paired up with the better guild is none closer to your rank were wanting a battle (and free from other partners).
Yes, its just you. The matching system was in fact changed to expand the range of possibilities battling more quickly a couple months back to stop high ranked guilds from having to wait forever to battle.

I am pretty sure this is how it works (thought I read this when they changed it):
For the first two minutes you'll get matched up with the closest guild within +/- 200 rating of yours. After that you'll get matched up with the closest guild that is also waiting.
A couple days a go I guested on a rank 4000+ guild and we faced RnS and OUT back to back (rank 20ish and rank 50ish at the time). We got these match ups because no one else was on.
