So, ive had factions for a week now. Still looking at the character creation screen trying to think of a name for my assassin.

Ive only ever had two other PVE characters, (a mesmer and a war) and both of them where hell to name also.

Ive been playing online rpgs since 1998, in ever single one, my characters had a one word name. I have built up quite a few names i am comfortable with, they all have one word.

Now some people may not understand why a name is so important. You are a bunch of newbies who have no buisness playing an online rpg, and are probably the same people who call people by their real names if they know them=p Im used to investing years in my characters and nothing sucks more than deciding you dont like your name at some later point. The years have given me a few names i am comfortable with and know that i can use, with out fear of not liking them later on, all one word. Even some of my characters who have longer multi-word names always only have the first in games showing.

But this two word minimum just screws that all up. So I ask, who was the person who decided to have said minimum? I wish to think ill of them while i watch the hours fall away.

So that you can't be XsniperkillerX. Who cares? Make X sniperkiller X.

You are whining about a NAME rule! Christ.

The point is to make your character feel like a person that has become a great hero. Instead of "lollerboy1202", the naming rule encouraged people to give their characters first and last names, making it a bit more "epic", if you will. It worked, too. I don't think I've seen even one name with a string of numbers or something like "XxemogirlxX".

You need to be more creative. I can come up with DOZENS of two-word names that I am quite fond of.

No, the naming rule encourages people to do things like type one word names with a space between each letter. Oh look! Its F R A N K. How are you doing? I have seen many names that are like "Ill randomname Ill" (I and l looking the same in game)

So instead of just naming their character.. "Bob" for example, its "Bob X" or "Bob The Awesome" or somehting equaly stupid... not that bob is not awesome, im sure he is.

And no. Im not that creative. Thats always been my problim. I have maybe 5 or 6 names that i just reuse over and over for all the characters i have ever made. Once i make a character that character becomes "Real" FOR ALL ETERNITY! And with out a good and decent name to associate them with i would rather simply clump their experiances in with another character that is close, and just pretend they are an alternate dimention coppy or some such.

See i started playing mmos when things where not so static, there where real identities and personalities in the community back then, and as such there where always totaly awesome names that did totaly awesome things. Names are important, much more important than looks actualy. Your name is your lable, you ARE your name. Need a good name.

it seems you have a very good imagination. i consider myself to have a good imagination, and i could've never came up with the "FOR ALL ETERNITY" defense for any of mine inane requests.

here's an idea: how about using that imagination of yours and come up with a good two-word name? if you're good enough, maybe enough people will get a clue and make good names themselves.

There was a couple of times when I would have liked to be able to pick one name, but the limitation forced me to work around that, and ended up coming up with a name with more meaning.

I had thought the thing promotes coming up with a real name-surname thing. Not that people don't make inane OMG1337FPS names anyway.

He's a die hard roleplayer. I feel your pain man. Maybe try to combine two of your names together (one as a first name, another as a last name).

All those I Bob I and F R A N K names are more common in PvP then PvE I might add.

rpgs since '98, you say? well, i've been playing rpgs when you connected to them with a program called TELNET, when everything was carefully and lovingly rendered in TEXT, when battle sequences consisted of rolling text saying:

you hit target
you hit target
you hit target
you hit target
target hit you
target hit you
target hit you
target hit you

hell, i've been playing rpgs when you have total control in character appearance. however, you had to describe then in TEXT, where imagination is key for EVERYTHING, and nobody complained about stupid name restrictions.

you, sir, by your own description, know NOTHING about rpgs.

My question was more directed toward your IMMEDIATE elitism, in your OPENING POST. Most people wait until at least the third post before getting airs of superiority.

You've got a nice horse there. It's pretty high. How about you come down?

Seriously though, you've only been playing since 98? I started roleplaying on IRC before then--perhaps right around that time, now that I stop to think about it.

I can sympathize with the OP, I have several names that I use in many games depending on the class of character I'm playing. I had a hard time coming up with some good last names for some of my chars.

Some advice.. first, there are several websites with fantasy name generators. I used some of them in the past and then fiddled with results to come up with names I liked.

Another thing you can do is use anagrams of existing names/words. It's often easier to create words/names in this manner than creating entirely new words/names from scratch. It's common for TV writers to use anagrams of other words/names in their creations.

There was a graph that i saw. It had the number of people playing mmos from like, the early 90s (muds included) to 2005. The number has jumped by about 100 times since i started playing. I am fully aware that there are persons out there who are my better, however i am secure in my knowledge that i am quite supirior to at least 99 out of every 100 persons i see. This is not basless pride or arrogance mind you. But simply my well earned right. You also have claim. Basicaly, in the grand scope of things. THere is pre EQ and post EQ.

crpg, online crpg is also different, as a persistant world is much departed from pen and paper and such. So i can not, for example, be trumped by someone who played d&d back in the day=p

Anyway. Names. agani;

--------------------------

Sidraket (i dropped the extra k to try and get people to pronounce it right.. it didint work >< the name has two sylables. THe first is sid, like cid, the second is raket, like what you hit a tennis ball with. Sid-rakket) is my mesmer name, and also the current name of my space vampire pirate, who is also a wizard, in eve online. So not an assassin name.

In my past, good rogues (and the assassin is a rogue) that i have known have always had somewhat trashy throwaway names. Once i recall with great admiration was a rogue by the name of "Magic Fox", who was realy 'neato' and talked about ddr pads and comic books. Total crappy rogue wierdness i say. (not that i care about comic books or ddr, but see its fitting for a rogue, so my assassins random chat would probably include like things, i take great care to say random lines of text like im some sort of a chat-bot to add flavor to any pug im in). Infact a good friend of mine played a rogue in one game, whos title was "Vaccume sucker" haha, vaccume sucker! Say it! SAY IT! It sounds so rogue like. The 'ume' in vacume is emphasized and elongated. vaccuummmeeee! Oh man. Like some sort of cheap cable porno. Thats what a rogue is, a cheap cable porno.

I need a name like that. Like Evanita Flows. Thats a classic name. Its also already used by my friend half a decade ago on a throwaway character. So i am forever barred from it. Because i desire soo much to be origional, because im insecure.

Oh, and the humor of my inability to spell superior is not lost to me=P

I would say the Name Surname has been around for quite some time in rpg's. Surname's usually would tell some kind of origin or family history behind the character or who they are affiliated with for race, evil/good allignment, etc. The more well known your character becomes in an rpg, the more popular the surname becomes, or more noticed. This of course was more popular in paper and pencil rpg's than online ones. That's usually why I spend most of my time on the Name of my character in the creation screen for any game I play. Because Names, to me, are a bit more important even though nobody will actually care what my name is in game, it matters only to me. So, I guess mine tend to sound more fantasy-like or whatever, because if I'm part of a story, I really wouldn't want to be referred to as scooby doo or something.
