Why, because I have no idea what the majority of L33t speak is.
I find NooB,nOOb and if noob to be the most annoying phrases ever.

A ] noob = new player unsure of game, or
b ] noob = player who thinks they know what they are talking about when actually they haven't got a clue. (like a sales man selling a clapped out car to a guy, only the guy is actually a motor mechanic and knows exactly what's up with the car so aint gonna fall for the sales speel.)

In fact I firmly beleive 90% of the people who use the word haven't got a clue what it means.
If it is A] then, its abit like the pot calling the kettle black, as we all start somewhere and if we don't help the new players out how can we expect peope to help us later.
and if it is B ] then atleast 75% of the people who use the word are actually noobs themselves.

Now being in the 30+ bracket, noob to me sounds strickingly close to nob.
Now nob I can understand, infact most people calling others noobs are actually being nobs. In fact if people call me a nob then they either took offence at what I did so thats their issue or they are actually anti social gamers or I myself am being unreasonable and anti social.

LOL! I'm in the same age-bracket as you and I find it all rather mystifying and rather... odd myself. It isn't that I don't understand it. It's just that I find it so...meaningless.

But it's true: Everyone, even the fastest learner the game has produced, had to be a new player at -some- point. I find it fascinating that people conveniently forget that small fact.

And, really, can't people come up with anything better than n00b? LOL! It's just kind of laughable.

Whenever I use "noob", it's in quote-mark, since I'm being sarcastic when quoting others using it. I just find this term overused and meaningless, a typical internet insult without meaning, kinda like "get a life". When you have nothing better to say to someone - call him a noob.
Only time I use it "normally" is when I make fun of friends - but this is a joke, not an insult(especially when spelled backwards )

Edit: Another thing that annoys me is "owned", and especially "pwned" variant. Still, it's better than "raped" that some use

n00b can be used to describe a wide varity of people now I guess. I normaly use it to someone who is new the game and a pain in the butt ("Whats this do?" "Why can't we jump." "How do you go inside a house?"), but I also have used it to someone who is a hacker, since they're so bad at the game that they have to cheat to win.

I use l33t sp34k when I'm being sarcastic, or at a time when it's actually funny, but those times are pretty rare. People who use l33t sp34k out of habit or to mock others really rattle my cage.

I'm in the high-end of that age bracket...and I've completely given up trying to keep track of changing slang terms - although I have friends who often clue me in.

The last time I kept up with such things was when 'grody' and 'tubular' were floating around some circles - and those were embarrassing enough.

when one reads the word "noob" one must rememebr two things:

at times it can be used to describe someone without much game knowledge (ie: a newbie)

most often then not a "noob" (or "n00b") is meant as a derogatory remark. someone that has exprience with said game but is still overly clueless.


and i'm with PD, i too use of 1337 speak when being ironic . I often couple that with other terms i have picked up from other games. so the end result is something along the lines of "oi m7 lo, hws u?"

Naab = "new" and "Dutch" version of Noob.. seems to grow populair however remains stupid.

I introduced many terms into the games I played in the past (More than one person has come up with them, I know, but, for that game/server at least, I started it ), so, I will share some of the ones I used and the basics.

Basic terms that will always be there:

Newb: Without a doubt, this person is obviously a brand new player to the game/area/event/etc

Noob: Someone completely unaware of what is going on, yet is one that claims to have played for a long time. They are essentially idiots that have not learned how to play the game/area/event/etc properly (Example: Someone Aggro'ing the same mob when told not to after repeating the mission multiple times) These people are best avoided altogether. Synonyms include: Asshat, 'Tard, Moron, and Idiot. Emotes to express encoutners with them are /doh and /sigh.

Newblet: A step below Newb. These people are new to the game, but they make playing with them a drain on your time and efforts.

Nooblet: Step below Noob. This is a person that not only fits the description of a Noob, but some how gets in your way at every critical thing or event that you need to take care of while playing. If you know of 8-bit Theatre, then this is the Fighter to your Black Mage.

Nub and Nublet: This evolved from the use of the term "Noob Tube", to "Nube Tube", and down to just "Nub" for those who weilded a "Noob Tube" in RTCW and ET. These Nubs and Nublets are people who are so thick-headed or so ignorant, that they repeatedly do something very annoying without even being aware of the fact that they are doing it. Examples include people that type in all capatilizations, draw on the map without knowing others can see it, go idle at critical moments without realizing that communication with the team is vital, and most importantly: etc.

Well, I might add to this if I can remember any of the "vulgar" sayings that I used to describe people while on TS and Ventrilo back in my clan days in RTCW, ET, and CoD.
