This is my smiter which I took the background away from using GIMP (it's like free photoshop... well... I guess it's not like free photoshop. free photoshop is pirated photoshop... ahem*)
anyway. thats my second attempt (you don't want to see the first one) at erasing backgrounds, so it looks rough around the edges.
edit:
here it is made into a sig. unfortunatly, It wouldn't let me save it as a png with multiple layers, so I "flattened it" which made the transparent part turn white. so then I saved it as a gif, which is the only other format I know that supports transparency and can be uploaded to imageshack, but then it made me turn it into an animation. so its a bigger file, and it also goes through a single frame (the second layer appearing over the background) if you watch closely.
edit: hmm... maybe guild-hall.net is just really slow. it doesn't take time to load here, and it doesn't do that weird animation thing.

the reason the Sigs don't work at the moment is that they're waiting for a server upgrade, and wants to make sure that signatures are the right size.
In my Clan/Guild, signatures can be 4 lines long (max) or a image (400wX75h) and 2 lines of text. This removes the clutter, and I er... got warned about my sig on the site, which I edited and got approval.
If this gets implemented, it'll be interesting to say the least

I don't see the whole deal though.
if you don't want to see signatures simply select that in your control panel.
that the server can't handle it is understandable but after that shudn't be a problem no matter what u have in it.
Although if you can't upload your signature, it won't be uploaded from this very server thus there's no problem at all.
noobs will put in 800x600 pics though so as for the restrictions
max width = 500
max height = 150
that's more than enough space to work with.
