Language issue on North American servers

The Euro servers will now have districts for each language. I would dare to ask the same for North American servers. For instance, here in Québec, we speak french and would certainly appreciate a french server. Especially people, like my friends, who aren't bilingual.

Why don't you switch to the European districts? Tons of people speak french there.

On-topic.. This certainly couldn't harm, but it'd be pointless as they'd be empty. Much more so than International anyway.

Quite true. I go to the international districts when playing with friends. Those places are so much quieter.

The problem with getting on the Euro servers is that when we log on most of the time, it's the middle of the night in Europe, hence very quiet. A french channel on American servers could definitely be nice...

Quebec - 7.5 million people.
Ontario - 12.2 million people.
Canadian total: 31 million.

Those two provinces alone aren't enough to have a server just for Canada unless there is one helva boost in sales up here.

Quebec by itself I would say might not have hardly as many players needed as by ANets standards in creating servers. There might be 1% of the entire population playing Guild Wars, which still isn't enough compared to hosting all of an entire section on one server to save money. This game isn't pay to play, if it was, they might bend to the needs of Quebec and host up a French server for you.





And its Quebec thats being mainly named here for servers. Hardly anyone I know around here (I live pretty close to Toronto) speaks french. I had to kiss up to my grade 9 teacher in order to get a passing grade just so I wouldn't have to take it again. Canadians might have to take the language, but they never use it outside of Quebec and around the provincal border. One of the misleading timbits of info that Americans I guess don't know.

(Heck, I remember only a few words and phrases, besides that, 9 years of learning it was extreamly pointless years spent in school along with pretty well the rest of the people in and around this area. Manditory to learn a language never used around your parts? Never spoke a word of it in the last 10 years after finishing that class.)

I'm american and only speak one language, english. However, I suppose I can throw whatever little weight I have behind this. Alot of canadians play this game, probably far more then most other americans would belive or realize. Yes, they speak both languages up there, but you have to realize its more of a prefrence then anything else, to speak french in some areas while in other areas, english. It depends entirely on where in canada you are at the time (Canadians feel free to reprimand me if im wrong, im just a stupid american repeating what he was taught )

I feel that french language based districts on north american severs would help those that only speak french on the canadian side as well as give those that just dont feel like speaking english a better selection of players to group with if they so choose.

This is quite true, this is why we should simply get additionnal districts not servers. Correct me if I'm wrong but the cost of having a "French district" should be about the same as having a "District 12" for example.

I do understand all the points said. But it's quite true some people from Quebec doesn't speak English. French international district aren't really helpful because most of the people from Europe will be asleep when we play (Hurrah for the time zones).

It would be nice to have a place where North American French people can meet and freely speaks French if they want to.

I see your point. This is exactly the same here except the languages are reversed. In Québec (the province), you rarely hear people talking english except in Montréal, Gatineau and maybe around Sherbrooke. For myself, I come from Rimouski and I also had the standard english courses for 9 years. And even then, before moving to Montréal, I really struggled using it. The thing is, it's very hard to learn a language when you don't have the opportunity to use it in your everyday life.

As for playing on the Euro servers, I much rather prefer to play with people on my timezone as its easier to group with people you already met before. Also, when installing Guild wars, we automatically get added to the North American server. Finally, as far as I like our far cousins (the french from France), cultural differences, behaviours and language particularities means I like to play with people from around here best. Where else can you meet a character with a name like "Frappe en Esti".

And to clear another misleading timbit, french Québec vs France is as different as english Texas vs England. Remember Brad Pitt from Snatch ? That's what a French hears when talking to a Quebecker...

I think it could be worthwhile to add french and spanish districts to the US servers... but after that then they'll want Korean/Japanese/Chinese + for asia...

The europe one made sense because there was no real majority. There were loads of Germans, French, Italians, Spanish, English, etc... In North America, most people speak english, in Europe there is no most.

In the Maritime provinces we have to learn French as we grow up in school. Do study English in school? Not that I would expect public school to teach adequate English, most people in the Maritimes don't learn adequate French.

I don't think there is anything wrong with using the international district. We really don't need a seperate district for french. In north america, french I believe is the fourth most spoken language, behind Mandrian, Spanish and English, But more important is you get a better cultural mix, which is much better than seperating all of us. I prefer the international district, it's mainly full of Canadians (Quebekers) Koreans and the serious RPG people, where else can you get a PUG with a couple of Koreans, a few Quebekers and an American?
