Playing a mercenary... Doing quests on request? Beware, there are people who dont consider the quest-offer a contract. Terms may be changed while playing! Sadly enough even prince Rurik himself does not respect the conditions he signed for himself

Whats this about? You agree to free some prisoner. You did your job. Do you get the reward? No! The allmighty employer Rurik simply anounces to continue to free some more guys. Da Hell, and my reward? Will it be raised? No, we are expected to do more work for the same reward. Not once, not twice, but countless times. Me and my band would like to say: Rurik, $#&* off! First the reward, than talk about new orders, for a reasonable extra award! Or we leave you in the middle of nowhere alone... Well thats no option. Because that leaves us without any income: our wives and kids would starve and without a doubt Rurik will magically find the way back himself

Even common men offering quests are starting to follow the bad examples of this so called prince more and more. Terms change while fighting, I'm getting home later and later, this is slavery! Mercenaries unite! Lets call for a lawsuit against those how offer us quest-contracts which are not in good faith!

There are 3 kinds of people in this digital world, good, bad and those who deserve to have somebodies fist plow right through their face. Rurik is a perfect example of #3

The fluffy explaination would be: Rurik is Prince of Ascalon so (at least he thinks) he has the god-given right to command you. All the other minor questers like Villagers and stuff see in you the aspiring Champion they themselves will never be, and ask you do do favors for them they could never do. As the hero of the story of course, that's what you do anyway day-in, day-out. ^_^

I didn't want to help in the fight against the white mantle, but they made me. I'm a slave to the system!!

You fight the white mantle because your people need you! All of you are selfish jerks! You're helping these people, and if you really only do it for the reward, then I pity you, for you are the lowest scum on the face of Tyria. These people offer you all they have to you to help them, because nobody else can. And what to you do? You WHINE because they didn't tell you everything they needed upfront!

Go take your whining somewhere else, where it won't fall on deaf ears.

/roleplaying

P.S. Rurik means well, jerk!

But that's what Merc's are all about. They don't have any morals, they're in it for the money.

Also I doubt the character you play is a Mercenary. You joined the academy to become one of Ascalon's soldiers. So you ARE under direct command of Rurik and the King. You also happen to be the best of his soldiers, so you're like an elite swat team or something.

if you dont have to help, infact you could boycot, but the story kinda depends on you pertisipating in moving your but.

I wish the story branched so you had the option of going against the mantle and eventually ascending (the way it is), or working with the Mantle and their gods and gaining power while not ascending.

i always wondered what happned to Ascalon, and the Charr. It seems everyone just stepped in some snow and forgot all about them, for ever! even the heroes of the story! I was invested in the characters!

Everybody's in it for the money. Mercs are just honest about it. Besides, what's more moral? Keeping to a signed contract between two willing parties, or involuntary conscription by the crown?

This is why a ranger prefers the company of their pets.... Your pet will not expect anything more than you can give. Unless you are out of Melandru chow.

There is more money in being a contract killer than a mercenary

Remember, you helped Rurik take the citizens of Rin, which had just been destroyed, away from Ascalon, the Charr, and King Adelbern. It can be assumed that many citizens in Ascalon still fight the failing war, but it can also be assumed that many would follow Rurik's lead, including those who know that the Charr have won, i.e. the other heroes of the story. So, you pretty much have a bunch of people still knee-deep in Charr, and a bunch of people fighting desperately to free their new home of the grasp of the White Mantle. You fall into the second group.
