idiots that sell dye

what is the deal with dye, i was trying to buy red and blue dye, and 3 people i talked to wanted like 500 gold a piece

then later i was trying to buy a purple dye, the vendor was selling them for 220 and buying them for 130, so i offered him 175 for it, and he laughed and claimed purple dye goes for 350

do people actually pay those outrageous prices for dye or did i just run into a few idiots?

yes to which? i ran into idiots or dyes are actually that expensive? if people buy dyes for that much from other players, why would they just go to the vendor when it would be less gold?

Yes, there are people that do. A lot of people don't realize that it's cheaper at some vendors. Also, there are people that are too lazy to go look at all the vendors to see their prices ...

...except that you only have to look at one dye trader because they're the same prices at any dye trader. The prices do vary at times, but when they do, it happens for every dye trader. I guess many don't realize it though, or just don't care.

just got that yesterday.. i kept buying green dyes from the vendor for different prices.

When I see peeps asking stupid prices for dye I usually check the vendor the say something like "excuse me but the dye vendor sells it for X so your a bit high dont you think" I make sure I do it public so everyone can see. Then if they get hosed on the price its their own fault.

BTW after I advertise the vendor price the peeps either undercut the vendor or ask for offers.

Personally I hate it when some try to rip off others.

Edit just thought I would mention this. I generly sell dye anywhere from 40g to 100g under what the vendors ask. I even give multi vial discounts.

I've been trading ones I don't want for ones I do (looking for red), and that seems to work, but I do notice a lot of people really trying to gouge the heck out of you in the new player areas. Preying upon ignorance, I suppose.

I do have something of a question about using dye... is it only the trim that changes color, or do you have to apply more than one dye on the piece to get the whole piece a certain color?

If more than one dye for main color/trim, is there an order in which you need to apply the dye to get the result you want?

You don't apply more than one dye to the armor to get a color mix. You can mix the dyes together by applying one dye to another. That will get you the new colors you're looking for.

There have been a few threads already discussed that you should be able to find using 'Search' if you'd like to see color charts of what dye colors are created by mixing.

Hrm. Let me ask another way, because I don't think I did very well getting my question across.

I used a blue dye on the chest piece and the fabric and trim both turned blue. Later, I used a yellow dye on the chest piece and the fabric remained blue, but the trim turned yellow.

This lead me to believe that the order in which you apply dye to your armor determined if it is the color of the entire piece, or just the trim.

Iis this true? If so, that would mean the first dye applied would always be the cloth color, correct?

Believe it or not I think these luxury items will help keep the GW economy stable longer.

I made a different post that suggested other vanity items. Because once people are equiped they do not really have anything to spend their money on. The luxeries I proposed were open ended because they became progressively more expensive as you made them larger (price based on volume). Items such as statues of your character, monuments, etc. This will allow for money to exit the game.

Other games have tried to fix this problem by making items degrade. I sure hope GW NEVER goes this rout. After all, how do you feel when something you bought breaks? Even if you have had it for a while you feel unhappy becuase you are spending money just to make things as good as they were before.

In real life this is unavoidable, but in a game it is entirely avoidable, so long as money can exit the system.

Guilds would just naturally compete to have the largest statues, or the most prominant plaques, or any number of other things that don't make them uberpowerful but still make them stand out in the game, possess bragging rights---maybe even firework shows, etc.

Eventually GW WILL have an economy problem without something like this. Long playing chracters will have too much money, but if prices go up then entirely new players can not get anywhere. GW is very well balanced economically right now I think. A voluntary exit for money with vanity items such as dye (which should be just one of many) will help keep the ecnomy healthy. Dye is a low priced vanity, but we need expensive ones too. More low priced ones would also not be a bad idea. Custom tattoos...perhaps for some you have to complete a very difficult quest AND pay some money ("I've been to the underworld and all I got was this lousy tattoo" or something.) The ability to change hairstyles would be another good low cost luxury.

Moderately priced ones could be some extra purchaseable emotes.

Most of these would be very easy to put into the game. These are not expansion pack ideas.

I am truly worried that, as with every other game of this kind, after 6 months or so the economy will be destroyed. GW doesn't have the duping problems, so maybe it has a year---but without an exit for cash, it will happen eventually.

I tend have the same worries, Poppinjay. Gold has already inflated tremendously and rare items are now dropping more often (on a global basis) as more people reach the later areas of the game. Eventually all high level characters will have max stat equipment with good bonuses and tons of gold lying around. There are a few ways to deal with this that I can think of. Vanity items seem like a good start, but even they will devalue eventually and they certainly don't make a good currency. I do like the idea of customizing Guild Halls with statues, etc. I really think the game is just going to develop a new higher-level currency after a while...perhaps Sigils (already going for 60k, won't inflate nearly as quickly as gold has).

There is also the issue of player turnover...once the initial buzz wears off, a lot of people will stop playing their characters and take them out of the economy. This should also help keep things stable after a while.

I recently sold a black dye in Ascalon City for 1555 GP and 1 Steel Ingot.

The vendor (only one, if I remember correctly) it went for 2080 GP.

Pretty good deal, imo.

When people stop a game they often give their money to one of the friends they made online, so this might actually make things worse.

I thought the vanity items would be enough if people were competing with each other for them.

There could also be some unique object in the game (say different paintings, etc) that only drop once that can be collected.

The thing is that one wants to be able to stop too much money from colleting in the hands of people at the end game while not crippling lower level players with impossible prices or boring repair costs.

Here are some other things that people might spend money for that will not make them too powerful.

Guilds could perhaps buy portals that link to some area of the map that they indicate. The portals would be expensive, and need to be powered by sacrificing magic items or materials for the gate to be used. The gate can only port to public areas, and would purely be a method of expanding map travel to favorite hunting areas, etc.

I really think people would pay for and collect emotes.

Perhaps certain deeds combined with certain fees could even get your character mentioned in the in game dialogue to other players until the fame for the action wears off.

Perhaps some non-battle skills could be purchased just to show off---firing off pretty "fireworks" etc.

And, though a lot of people might not like this, there could simply be a tax placed on characters or guilds that have a particular amount of money but not on people below that. The money could be calculated for all of ones characters combined.

Perhaps buying and owning certain amounts of land or having a reputation that would require money as well as deeds would ear characters title that appear before their names. So that this is really shown off, guards may salute to characters of a high eough rank. NPCs could also show some sort of respect.

Perhaps certain character effects can be purchased---such as a potion that will make a characters eyes glow for a week, or make them appear taller or shorter.

Hair dye could also be added (which would fade over time) to allow a character to have unnatural colors for hair.

Perhaps enough money given to charity (which would just disappear in game terms) could earn one a temporary halo or some new actions.

Money and deeds could buy influence points which could then be spent to declair a holiday that is announced that might have some equal game effect for everybody.

While monuments wouldn't degrade, the choice spots to place them in could be rented and vary by price (and perhaps also require a particular guild rating). Guilds could also be rated by prestige, wealth, land, etc. Ideal places to show off your guilds power would be along the roads most often traversed.

Perhaps titles could give a player access to certain rooms that regular adventurers could not enter. Nice rooms, but rooms which do nothing in game terms.

These are just some suggestions, and they would all be relatively easy to create in programming terms (I don't know about how difficult it would be to design the new required graphics).

All together this is a bit of work, but the developers need to start working on putting some sort of plan like this into action before it is too late. Your points about how fast it is going to get worse are well taken.

One thing is clear, the fact that people care about dye and chracter alteration shows that people are interested in more than just power affecting skills and levels. If they are put into the game people WILL pay for these items/perks/abilities.

There could even be an Ascalon library that one could place a book in if he or she has paid enough money and accomplished enough in the game. The books could then be looked at by other players (subject to the normal chat filters). Some might contain personal histories for role players out there, and some might contain hints, some might be humorous, and some might just be boring.

These may seem sillier, but additionally (and this has nothign to do with money) I think that people would like to compete over other things than just level and guild ranking. There would be a world-wise ranking that is related to how much of the world one has explored. There could be unique items that are collected and one could have a collectors rank. There could be a ranking for a love life in the game, or the most xp gained without a death, greatest number of consecutive victories int he arena (I was in a group that had about 40 victories in a row!), or any number of other accomplishments.

That could be further down the road, but I think many players would invest time in some of these things. I am specifically thinking of the popular game Pirates! (although it wasn't an online game) in which one strove to maximize ones own standing in rank, love, pirate rating, etc. And there are some popular online games that give ratings for things like "most different kinds of foods eaten", etc.

If a casino is added then there could be some stats and ranking for the games within the game as well.

I know a lot of people might object that these later ideas don't seem to fit in with guilds battling each other, but the more people who continue to play the game after they have maxed out their characters, and the more people who log on for different reasons at different times, the more players there will ultimately be, the more justification for expansion packs, and the more reason for game updates and additions. Further the world would feel more alive and detailed. Some people might find themselves logging on later in the game just to play hours of a GW version of pokers (elements can fill in for the suits in a normal deck of cards). And, since the house takes a cut, this would in fact be a way to export even more money out of the game.
