Thinking of buying this game....

I am playing WoW atm , and tired of all the downtime the servers have been experiencing lately, besides in end game you only really have 2-3 dungeons you constantly raid for items.

What can you guys tell me about this game? Any former WoW subscribers here? Can anyone give me an informed comparison of the two?(Meaning you have played both) How is the server stability? If it is anything like NC soft's other title, CoH, I imagine the servers are rock solid.

i have been playing this game for over a yearm and have never had any problems with the server at all. i think i have maybe dissconected once, but was able to log right back on and continue playing. they have updates every week that fix any possible bugs or glitches, so the game is always running smoothly. i would highly recomend it!!!

First off, it's made my ArenaNet, no NCSoft, they only produced it.

ArenaNet was created by a team of people who were lead programmers for blizzard, and left after WoW was made.

The servers are always up. And by always, I mean ALWAYS. I have never had them be down since beta.

This game is nothing like WoW. It take skills, and by skills, I mean the in-game skills, and your knowledge on how/when to use them. You have a maximum of 8 skill you can carry with you in battle, making you plan ahead. There are 90+skill for each class, and you have a Primary and Secondary class, so you can use basically 180+ skill in combination with each other.

As for comparing them..hm...It takes A LOT more team work to win in PvP in GW than in WoW. There virtually no grind, since you level by going through the story missions anyways. Equipment make very little difference, and most are pretty cheap to come by, also.

After you get done with the story missions, you can go do dungeons for eternity, but the real life of the game comes out during GvG.

I'm not entirly sure how GvG works, since I've yet to do it, but I'm sure someone else on this forum will tell you ^_^

As for the community, it's pretty bad. Most people guy gold off of EBay, and most people are rude as hell. However, the farthur you get into the story, the less retards you meet.

It's 6am here, and I have yet to get any sleep, so that's really all I can think of at the moment, heh. I'm sure there are a lot bigger differences, but someone else should be able to explain them better than I could, since I have yet to really explore the aspect of PvPin'.

Omg, I can't believe I forgot this. Unlike WoW, there are never any HUGE ass patches to download that are like 300mb+. The game have a steamlines update system that updates while you play the game, it's really great, heh.

ive played both,
WoW PvE is more fun under 60 (but you pay fees)
GW PvP is *much* better
GW level cap game is better

WoW at 60 is very boring, unless you enjoy 40 person raids

In reference to the servers.. yes they are rock solid... hard as diamonds.
Server downtime was the reason I left WOW, ok so GW is linear in comparison but I have still racked up 700 hours plus and every single hour has been fun (and free!).

People say WOW is more challenging, I say the challenge with GW is finding the challenging parts; so many secrets I doubt anyone knows them all.

Yes you need it to buy new armor,and to get that perfect weapon,But, you can get Most weapons and armor from collectors,which are NPC's that are found throughout the world of Tyria, in which you can trade a certain amount of monster drops (usually 3-5 of an item, such as say Gargoyle skulls which can be gotten from Gargoyles).Which may take a while to gain, though it will be faster than having to collect large quantities of gold just to buy a weapon that you can get with items worth 5-25 gold each.

Unlike WoW, GuildWars is not a consistent world, there are outposts/cities where players can travel to and from, where they can trade items, form parties to complete quests or to travel to other outposts.

GW is missing something compared to WoW that people aren't mentioning.

First off the PvE is easy for anyone that's reached the high end of WoW raiding. You'll find yourself bored until the desert if you know what pulling is. It's pretty graphically but it's purely 2-D. You will never fall off a cliff or fly or even climb over a 2-inch berm of ice.

Every map is identical in that it's a winding path going from the entrance to up to a max of 4 other zone entrances.

There are no places in this zone that have any feel. The least and lowest level dungeons and area's in WoW feel more like an adventure than the highest in this game.

You will never feel like you're randomly interacting with the environment, it's all scripted out.

This all makes the game feel like a sham at first, but it has many redeeming factors.

The biggest for me is the dual skill system and the combat. Maybe others will disagree but I think that it's the best out there. You have to plan and coordinate with others for the big missions or PvP. The combat is fast and furious and it's pretty obvious that strategy is key to winning.

Interupts are real time and the classes and skills are as balanced as any game I've played.

Combat is awesome.

Like everyone said, servers are rock solid, I've seen the servers down once for a very short while and I've been playing since beta.

Any lag is client side, the game runs smoothly on low computers and high. I've seen whole team lag a couple times but it's so unusual that it's not even worth mentioning.

I believe thats an accurate description.. I would also add some stuff as I am in a position just opposite to OP. I have played guildwars since may 2005 and have started WoW about 3 weeks back. I have a level 30 Warrior and I must say that I am enjoying the PvE side of things. I have tried a bit of PvP in WoW but it just doesnt comes close to GW. So my advice to anyone who goes from WoW to GW is to try PvP. Find a good guild try some GvG. Go to random arenas and talk to your friends/guildmates to understand what works and what doesnt. If you only do PvE after coming from WoW, you will find this game lacking and would probably stop playing. Also, stick to guru for all your GW questions, suggestions, trading etc .

PS : Stay away from Heroes accent till you have some experience and even after that go there with your guild. If there is any place in GW that is very unforgiving to new players its HA. A visit there can leave a very bad impression on a new player about GW community, which is not the true picture.

True that visiting Ha can leave the new players horrified of the game and how guild require rank/specific skills/Vent ....
That iss why i think Anet did a great job making HA an unlockable feature after completing few Team arena games

First, it's made by ArenaNet; NCSoft just owns ArenaNet.

The servers don't go down at all. Updates involve you quitting GW then starting it back up, and about 30 seconds to automatically download the updates. I've heard of WoW players having to leave the game for hours for it to update and can't believe people put up with that, especially when you pay fees.

I think GW is a superior game, but if you buy it, don't go in expecting a traditional MMORPG. It's not. It's not about grinding, loot, leveling up, etc. It's about *player* (not character) skill. It's more like Magic: the Gathering in realtime than a traditional RPG.

The PvE part was originally intended as an introduction to the high-level play; PvP. The PvE is not as immersive as it could be, but this should be changing in Chapter 2. Speaking of Chapter 2, you will be able to buy it and play though all of its content without having to purchase Chapter 1. GW is cool like that.

The PvP in GW is very good. It's tactical and quite exciting. Balance between professions is very good and all characters are basically equal. No character will "pwn" another because he's just better. Again, it's about player skill, not character "leetness".

In short, if you want a game where you can compete against others in a balanced, fair setting and not have to grind or farm to find money or items (though many people still do; I don't understand why), then you'll probably like GW. If you want a game where you spend hours leveling up and finding gear so that your character will be better than other characters, GW is probably not for you.

Funny that sounds an awful lot like Guild Wars ATM.... only I'd replace downtime with disconnects and lag.... But there's no wait time when logging in so.....

Your computer/internet just sucks. Its always the same people over and over who complain about disconnections and lag. :P

WoW and Guild Wars are very diffent games. I have played both (though only maybe 40+hrs in WoW).

In PvE (meaning storyline playing) there is almost always something do to, even if you have beatin all the missions. There is always one more quest (for the most part) that is out in the middle of nowhere. Getting all the skills is one of the biggests goals which can take a bit. After that, its all about getting rich, doing the many different high level areas for items (Sorrows Furnace, Tombs, Underworld, Fissure of Woe).

In PvP, it can be a real problem for a new player to rank up (they are similar to WoW ranks except it only goes up for winning, not for HKs or damage assists). In all arenas you get faction for killing people and/or winning the match, and in the big 8v8 matches you get fame for winning (more fame == more rank).

Severs are great, there is no "down time" like there is in WoW. There is no issues with realms, so your characters can interact with anyone else in the game. You are based in the geographical area you live in (like American or Europe) but there are international districts where you can meet with anyone.

The only REAL downside of GW over WoW is the fact that everything is instanced, but thats really not a big issue since you don't have to wait for respawns or re-setting like you do in WoW when someone else kills the guy that you need to kill before you.

GW is more of a pick up and play when you have the time game. Instant travel means you don't have to waste a half hour to get to where you need to, and NPC henchmen allow you to get a group in under 30 seconds (though they arn't bright, they are computers after all).

This game can be as realaxed or as hardcore as you want it to be.

Get a Guild Wars player to send you an invite for the Factions preview event coming up (March 24), and you can try it yourself for free. There are plenty of places to explore, although the places that are farmed are less in number, but still of better selection than other games (questing alone can give a fair crop of items and gold)

Heres how guild wars seemed to me.
Create character, run from one side of the map to the other leveling along the way. Hit 20, Yay! Run fow and uw for eons, hit sorrows furnace, make money, get perfect weapons...and thats it. Pvp if you want, in my eyes again though is inferior to WoW pvp due to a lack of variety.

Guild wars doesn't have a pvp battlefield, where the 2 opposing forces constantly pound on each other for hours on end, each team trying to figure out a strategy that might net them the next control point.

If nothing else in WoW if I get my ass handed to me, I more then likely had fun in the process. Spirit spam, iway and whatever this months flavor is, don't exist.

Ok...so wows servers go down tuesday for maintenence...big deal....it's only 6 or so hours once a week. Tell me what other REAL content Anet has provided aside from sorrows furnace? N o t h i n g.

The 15 bucks I spend on wow each month is more then worth it. I never thought I'd say that a year ago....whole different story when you're not judging the book by it's cover.

P.S. Does guild wars have a little button you can push and request help from a blizzard employee 24/7/365? Didn't think so...

Bottom line is, here and anywhere and everywhere else in the world....you get what you pay for, plain and simple.

Many of my past guildmates were disbanded because they "tried out" WoW. Needless to say they never returned to Tyria. In short, WoW is undeniably a game with more content and interactivity than Guild Wars. One thing alone makes me say that... you can jump.

On the other hand, my play schedule isn't constant, or hardcore as many WoW players invest at least 40 hours a week to the world of Azeroth, not doing so would make me feel like i wasted 15 dollars that month. But here in Tyria, I dont feel like I was obligated to play, there's no commitment needed. I can leave the game for an entire month and not feel my money (or Gamecards whatever they use now...) was being wasted.

In the end it depends on your play style, if you're a casual player, Guild Wars is the economical way. if you're a Hardcore player, WoW might have more content suitable for your everyday griding schedule.

Well, I agree the the world of WoW is more immensive, but I think like Diablo said it's more a matter of playstyle and preference rather than one game being superior over the other.

I don't think there's a lack of content or updates in GW ... of course comparing it to a game that has updates far too often, IMHO, like WoW is an unfair comparison.

I can always find something to do in GW ... even if I just log in for an hour. My advice: get a good and active guild. They can decrease your game learning-curve (not that there is TOO much of one to begin with) and provide a source of people for cooperative gameplay and PvP.
