Mesmers make missions easy for everyone else. Sometimes, they make them rediculously easy. Alternatively, if you don't have the right kind of setup for a mission (the 'right kind' can change from area to area) then you can end up pretty useless. It takes brains to play a good mesmer.

Their gimmick is that they can cast spells faster, and are great at taking out bosses and similar large targets. By 'take out', I usually mean render useless and vulnerable, but that's not to say mesmers can't dish out the damage. It's just harder to do than other professions.

Me/N works because Necromancers and Mesmers are really two sides of the same coin: Mesmers work well against single targets, while Necromancers have skills that affect over an area. They're both subtle professions, or can be. Or you could just summon fifty minions and have at it.

Just getting the unanswered question.. mesmers can solo a few things.

55hp builds can kill...

Smite run (aatxes, graspings, smite crawlers, coldfire nights)
Forest titans
griffons
hydras
sandwurms
and more...

full hp builds (somewhat less of them) can kill
ettins
some others that I can't remember right now

Basically, beginners sums up the layman terms of mesmerization. For more detail, look at some of the threads in the forums such as 'Mesmer builds - discussion.'

I can solo minotaurs(desert) with a full hp Me/N. Still working to tweak the build to be able to do Griffons, but I don't have much hope.

Just wanted to add

Titan's drop Rare (as in rare not just gold) shields and hammers. They also drop armor's etc. Its a 'farm for the challenge' kinda farming, the payoff's aren't many, but they're huge.

Con's of course for the Mesmer:

Being the single most misunderstood and neglected class in the game.

Its sometimes hard to find a PuG when people are looking for the "Invincible Trinity" of Ele, Warrior, Monk.

Pros:

Adaptability.

Mesmer's are also very fun class to play.

I can tell you having just taken my Mesmer past Thunderhead(after playing through w/ a Warrior, Monk, Necro, and Ranger(he was deleted)), is that they make EVERY mission easier. Maybe it's just because I'm a more experienced and well-rounded player now, but you will NEVER be in a group that gets stuck on a monk boss while you're a mesmer.

We're an underappreciated class because everyone just assumes its the Ele's and Warriors doing the damage...I wish there were more visible effects of our spells going off when the enemy is decimated, to let the unbelievers know who the real bossman is in the PUG's.

My most recent favorite - Backfire on a Mursaat Necromancer right before he casts Blood Renewal. Instagib.

Begginers_Luck is right on having the right type of setup. In my experience, this revolves around having a balance between Anti-Caster and Anti-Warrior, once you get a look at the skillsets you'll know what I mean. Nothing better then getting Empathy and Ineptiude on a Whinte Mantle using Frenzy. Not only does he own himself, he's blind the whole time. Just one of the many combo's a Mesmer can put together.

Ok I've typed too much, I'll shutup now.

Pros: Depending on the build you set up, no build is safe from a Mesmer. You can go Caster Shutdown, Warrior Crippling or you can create some fiendishly evil build that drives even the AI insane, and they don't even have a brain to begin with!

Cons: Mesmers usually aren't survivors, though there are Mantras that can help fix that like Physical Resistance, Distortion etc. The other thing is that if you're a Mesmer, it makes for real hard going in the later missions because a Mesmer isn't what a lot of people are looking for to make that perfect all-destroying group, despite the fact that Mesmers are often all that's needed to complete that all-destroying group, not an extra Monk. Blast you holy trinity of Tank, Nuker and Monk!

Its no news I am a noob, so I am going to ask:

Why would a 55hp Me can solo better than a full HP Me?

What is the key of being 55?

What is the key of being 55? You have to be Me/Mo, and using Protective Spirit with 55hp means you only take 5 damage per hit.

and with 10 hp regen, that equates to being able to absorb 4 hits per second (extremely handy vs things that hit very hard)

I recently started a mesmer myself, and I had an interesting experience in the Ruins of Surmia mission last night. Me, being not so bright sometimes, replaced my res sig with a 'cool new domination skill' right before going into the mission. I get to the bonus, I'm wiping out the fire dudes when Alesia goes down.

rant

Why is it that firestorm causes baddies to run to safety but henchies will stand there and take the full duration?

/rant

Anyhoo, I'm not too stressed because Stefan and Reyna are still alive and they're packing Sigs. Scratch that, Reyna is still alive and she's got a res sig. So I wrap up the guys up top, finish the bonus and stand there waiting for my faithful ranger friend to res our healer so we can keep going. And I'm waiting. Turns out Alesia had indeed died once already, Reyna's sig is burned out. So I figure, no problem, I've got the bonus done I'll just grab the Surmian monument for cities and call it a night. So I go up there, grab the monument and say to myself "You know what, why quit? Let's see how far we get before we're sent back to the outpost."

I couldn't have done it with my Monk, Warrior, Elementalist, Necromancer or Ranger... But Reyna and I finished that mission by ourselves. All it took was a bit of familiarity, a little bit of terrain exploiting and a whole crapload of domination magic.

I think that is the pro and the con for mesmers right there. We spend so much of the game not needing groups that when we finally get to the point where we do... Nobody knows what we're capable of.

Will everyone please give the tired 'Mesmers are underappreciated' mantra a rest? Almost every single balanced tombs build contains not one but two E-Surgers.

I prefer rangers over mesmer just because interupts are almost all based on skill instead of spell, our armor is much better, and we can dish out some decent damage while wreacking havoc, but I guess mesmers have their use.

Pros of being a mesmer: its fun
Cons: getting into a group can, at times, be hard.

Yes, mesmers can solo, and a great variety of creatures at that, solo builds range from pure mesmer to mesmer + secondary profs. depending on what you're soloing at the time.

Rangers can interupt more skills atm (I am soo hoping for more skill interupts for mesmers in the next chapter) however, a mesmer can do nasty things like powerblock a spell and no ranger can compete with that.

Me/N is a wonderful combination, curses provides some nice skills, with my personal favourite being parasitic bond (degen + health for me when it ends).
