Question about dyes

Ok, whilst in FoW the other day I noticed one of our warriors had 15k platemail armour dyed black but it had retained the gold plating. It looked pretty sweet so I thought I'd try it but when I tried to dye my 15k platemail black the entire armour turned black.

Any idea how he did it?

(No, I don't have a screeni, I wish I did though.)

15k platemail is black to start with?

'Tis silver, albeit a very dark silver.

FoW is dark, therefore the armor LOOKED darker due to the lighting. Stand in front of some tombs (old now pve) and your character gets a tan and red tinge. It's just lighting, they didnt really have black armor, but it looked like it.
