HELP!!! very high gpu temp

hi i have the following specs

proc: Anthlon 2800+
1 gig of ram
80 gig hitachi hardrive
geforce 5700ultra 128 mb of ram
winxp home sp2 installed
comcast inet


and my problem comes with my gpu temperature of my video card when i start up guildwars. It idles 42c and when i start running GW it soon gets to around 63c this is a huge boost in temp that is worrying me. No other games cause such a stress on my gpu not even with all the bells and whistles turned on (AA,AF, vsync, bigger rez). I have even had the game crash on me because the video card became too hot. I love the gameplay and am just getting good items recently but i dont want to fry my video card. I also dont have enough money to get a brand new card just for this game. Is there any fix for this sort of problem? i have the lastest drivers and everything. I also have 4 case fans and stock cooling on the video card. I cleaned the case out so no dust would cause a problem but the computer still gets way too hot for my liking and its starting to scare my. any help would be appreciated.

It is a known problem and they are (hopefully..) working on it. I made a thread bout it not to long ago.

note that very few people overall are having any problems so it comes down to the individual pc not the game

Another possibility is that the people that GW's does work for, are unknowingly barely scraping by. We don't know this, thus we can't say that everyone's PC isn't getting hotter than normal, which is what you are saying. I'm not saying that it is or isn't. Only GW's themselves would know this for a fact.

What all of us who have been reading these forums for the past weeks do know, is that there a multiple amounts of people that their systems are overheating ONLY while running GW's.

All I am saying, is that you are unable to make a "definate" decision on your own that it is or is not the individual PC or the game.

Or, from what you are saying, should ALL of us that are having problems just say to ourselves, "Loviatar has spoken. Everyone that is having a problem, it is YOUR problem and only YOUR problem."? Well?

all i am saying is that the vast majority of people are happily playing without problems relating to heat

i can say my personal rig has heat monitors which show that at 100 per cent cpu usage i can go for hours without more than a rise from 43C up to 47C measured increase

edit

a prime example is the person who had the heat related shutdown at 75C and was advised to open the pc and clean out dust if any in the heatsink

he cleaned the heatsink and dropped down to 50 C

case solved and not the games fault after all

if the system is marginal or not taken care of that is not GW fault

Ok. One more time, you do not know for a fact that the "vast majority" of PC's running GW's are not heating up more than normal. If you do, please share with the rest of us how you are monitoring all the PC's in the world that are running GW's.

They might not experience the "crash" or any other symptoms. But they "might" still be overheating, "more than normal". Which would still be a problem if that were occuring. Again, i'm not saying that this is occuring. I'm simply saying that it is a possibility that should be looked into.

If GW's is making systems run hotter than normal without having the friggin' North Pole sitting on your Tower, than a solution should definately be looked at.

If not, then they need to tell everyone exactly how many fans or iceburgs they need to install and exactly what PSU they need in order to play GW's aswell.

most of the people are not having problems and are happily playing as we type

additionally when they did their testing to get their minimum specs to run on you can bet they checked for anything that might be a cause for damage liability

some thing that caused mass meltdown or even heating outside of the normal operating range would have had their lawyers yelling NO

the thermal shutdown on intel is about 75+C

amd had an OPERATING range up to 70C and the danger zone is a bit higher

the normal idle temp on both is 35C-45C depending on ambient air temp position of case for airflow etc

even a 10-15 degree rise is within the normal operating range

and now my cat is yelling feed me

the simple answer is that the system you purchase is designed to handle full load work with a margin to spare over that

It is not the PC, it is the game. WHY? because the crash ONLY happens while the game is running, and the overheat ONLY happens when playing it.

It's true that GuildWars make all GPU going very heat... Not only CPU... And this is a BIG issue.

well they just patched not to long ago, addressing crash issues, i wonder if this fixes the crashes due to overheats as well

No matter what software you run, whether its Guild Wars, or your favorite stress program, or heck..solitare.


If the PC is properly cooled it will NOT overheat. No matter the software, no matter how much software is running. No matter any software run on it.

No matter if you're running the buggiest game in history daggerfall, or diablo, or guild wars, or doom 3, or even auto cad.

Software cannot cause overheating, except when it isnt adequetely cooled.

When a CPU, or Video Card, or memory or anything runs at 100% load, there is no more. There is no magical programing that will cause a system to overheat. (Except in rare cases where hardware has "bugs". The original Pentium 1 had a bug in the hardware that could cause problems. However, it had nothing to do with heat, i only throw possibly in there incase in some odd way a hardware bug was causing extra voltage, or something equally weird that stressed the cooling system beyond its normal functioning under load. However, this is far from even being likely in any case.)

If a system is overheating, its caused by ineffective cooling.

I feel i should make another post to this thread to answer a question before its asked:

"How come guild wars crashes from overheating and not game X?" (where X is doom 3/hl2/far cry/ut2k4 etc.)

The same reason a system may not be able to calculate PI exactly, yet doesnt crash on games.

The game that is crashing is revealing the hardware problem. Guild Wars shows you the point where your system is crashing. And, if its due to heat, its not 100% stable. But rest assured, it IS a real problem with your machine.

Same problem. Processor overheats while playing GW. (AMD 2200+) I got some tech support and they did find a solution: directing a fan into my computer case. Whatever works. It hasn't crashed once. Just hope I can find a better solution soon.

You may want to try cleaning it out. Systems at this time of year, and for the next few months will start showing more signs of overheating due to the rise in ambient temperatures in many places.

Installing an extra case fan or two wouldnt hurt either. (or having some extra, or improved cooling done for you if you arent feeling up to it.)

Yeah I'm probably going to have to but I am glad that it works. The tech support was really nice and helpful.

i have this same problem no amount of fans will help i have 3 on my case i ended up putting a box fan near it and opening my case up but that didnt work either just delays the inevitable.

With the extra cooling does it last longer between crashes? If so then its an overheating problem, could be a clogged heat sink, or a failing cpu fan. Or in the case of video a failing video card fan or heatsink.

Kitar, Why on earth would you agree with tech support it's an overheating problem when before Guild Wars can along everyones machines were cooling very well and then overnight machine changes to overheating when running GW! All the other games like WOW, Fry Cry and Doom3 that requires higher end reqs don't run into this problem.

Also when tech support tells an user to open the case and direct a fan into the case to cool it down means altering peoples hardware for the sake of thier mistake.

I thought my CPU fan was going bad and I went and spend some $50 to "fixed" this overheating problem. It was installed professionally and took the temp down from 55C to 41C. Did it solve the problem? NO!

Okay put this another way, if a programmer writes some program to control a nuke reactor station and it goes up in smoke do you tell the nuke station it was thier fault or the programmer?

Integrity always breakdown when a problem arises, fingers gets pointed at others to divert the issue elsewhere. Why don't NCSoft issue a statement to everyone that the problem is looked into and backtrack what events may have triggered this problem. That's how my work place does things, investigate the issue and show prove it's not a NCSofts problem!

well for what its worth i just conducted a test of sorts on my own gpu and was suprised. My case is clean (in fact its brand new, i just bought it & installed everything into it a few weeks ago) and i have 3 case fans, and no knowen issues with guild wars playing on my PC, it does not skip, crash, freeze, or cause any problems that I know of. My gpu however, did jump 10 full degrees when playing GW. from 53 to 63 degrees C. With GW running in the background and me typing this my gpu is currently 55 degrees, but from the moment the game is maxamized on the game runs my gpu at 63 degrees C steady.

EDIT:: This appearently doesnt prove anything, see EDIT2 below.

EDIT2:: Since its not an experiment without other games, here are the results from two other games plus Guild Wars.

Game 1 ~ Guild Wars ~ 63 degrees C ~ 2:27 am MST
Game 2 ~ Need for Speed: Underground 2 ~ 65 degrees C ~ 3:20 am MST
Game 3 ~ Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 ~ 65 degrees C ~ 3:40 am MST

All game specs are based on 10 mins worth of playing time.

I built this system from the ground up piece by piece, but it appears to me that there is no diffrence really in GPU heatup from one game to the next on my particular system. 10 degrees is a fair amount, but it seems to me that next gen games do this naturally. Please note this is all based soley on my system and that other systems CAN and DO work diffrently, particularly if they are home built like mine. Each computer is like a human in that they are all diffrent, two computers built exactly the same with the same parts and specs may react diffrently to the same game or program. It is IMO that this problem is based on the individual computer.

EDIT3:: xlulux, just an idea, is your case completly sealed ie. all plates on the back where your pci slots are and the case closed so that there are no holes in your case? Think of a car on a hot day with the air conditioner on, rolling down the windows lets the cold air out and works against the air conditioner. It works similarly with a case, if you have openings in your case you might be overheating due the loss of the cooler air.

It is a problem and they for sure know about it...here is a response from nc support

I put a fan blowing into this new system that is not in need of cleaning and my temp stays around 63c After I let them know about it I get the following response

"Ok, it sounds like you do have a heating issue. I understand that pointing a fan towards your opened PC isn't a very attractive solution. You might consider installing extra fans in your PC. You might also think about putting your system in to a new case that allows for more air flow to your components.

Though I'm glad we have narrowed down your issue, I'm sorry to hear you may have to make some additional adjustments to your PC.

Please let us know if you have any further questions."

I don't think blaming the PC is a good response...The game obviously has issues with certain boards/video cards. I have never...never had a game overheat anything on my PC they know its doing it. Let's hope they can find a solution other than the blowing fan
