So basically i haven't played this game for over 6 years at least, and around that time my old computers motherboard fried, after which i bought a laptop and never went back to the pc, until now, unfortunately the cd key was still active on that computers hard drive so im wondering if there is a way to de-activate the key on that computer so it can be used on this new one. Any help appreciated.

I take it you are talking about Guild Wars and not a different game.

Guild Wars never was locked to any hardware. All you need to access Guild Wars is your Email address, a character name active on your account and the password.

You can download the client without needing any of this information and when you start the client it will ask for Email/Char name/ PW.

perhaps you remember what guild you were part of? or the name of one of your friends ingame? Normally I would suggest looking at your old screenshot folder, but seeing as you say your old computer is fried, that is not really an option---though you could set your old hard drive up as an external drive to your laptop to access that (but that would be something for the tech forum to help you with).
Though as a last resort you could try the gw2 support--submit a ticket with 'forgot character name guildwars' since you sound like you remember your email and password.
