Newbie: What to buy?

Hello all, nice to meet you! I'm presently interested in picking up Guild Wars and I see quite a few editions available and I'm wondering if I should pick up Guild Wars: Platinum Edition, Guild Wars: Trilogy, or maybe just go about picking up each box individually? I'm sure I can get a download version easily, but I'd prefer to go with boxes as I simply like to have a physical product. Thank you for your help!

the trilogy has prophecies, factions and nightfall in 1
then buy eye of the north, add it, and you'll have all you need

you can use a fire imp if you buy any as far as i've heard, which gives you a summon to level up easier, until max level

after you learned about the game, you can buy character slots and such from either ncsoft or GW's ingame store, and maybe some costumes you'd like

also, remember to NOT throw away your keys (the codes you get with it), in case you forget your password and such
and in case you will ever buy a second account: dont mix up the codes :P

i knew someone who didnt keep his codes, and now has no access to his account, because he gave his password to someone who acted like a GM (game master), which never ask for passwords, and that account is now banned for life

(and yes, he is a stupid guy, i didnt even like him :P)

if you have your GW, you can also buy the bonus weapons later on
they are nice to use for a starter character, but i only use them for my heroes now, as there are better weapons than those around

Thanks for the information it's greatly appreciated. I had saw the sticky but I wasn't sure if the Platinum box had all included or not. I managed to get them ordered and should have them tomorrow. I haven't decided on a profession to play yet though, as I have no clue what would be the least painful newbie experience. My main interests are Paragon, Warrior, and Monk. I'd also like to find a guild if possible that's newbie friendly and would be willing to teach me about the game and content. Thanks again guys!

Out of the 3 professions that you mentioned, I recommend you try the Warrior first.

Monks have mostly defensive builds (healing and damage reduction) and they tend to be played either by NPC's (heroes or henchmen) or by experienced players. Monks have some offensive builds, usually with Ray of Judgement as the elite skill, but those builds are only efficient against undead enemies, who take double damage from holy damage.

Paragons tend to play one of two builds: a Spear Master with some Command skills or the Imbagon (someone who spams "There's Nothing to Fear!", the Warrior skill "Save Yourselves", and maybe some Command skills). They don't have as much build variety or even as many skills as other professions; and one of their attribute lines, namely Motivation, has been nerfed into oblivion.

Warriors can be good with any weapon, except the bow, and have access to many offensive builds and some defensive builds.

Lastly, if you're interested in a guild then I suggest you read some of the topics in the Guild Recruitment part of this forum or just make a new topic here.

Alright then, Warrior it is. I think I'll start with Prophecies simply because it's the first game and likely geared towards new players. As for builds I'm not sure on all of that yet, I'll have to figure out what weapon appeals to me at the time. Thanks for the info!

dont worry about builds! You should learn the game mechanics before any of that even comes into play....my best advice..

Play the game and dont worry about anything but learning! Have a fun time and the rest will fall in naturally. (dont worry about dying and such...its part of learning the game). You can always make more characters too...that's what the extra slots are for....

Starting in Prophecies is an excellent idea however, once you reach the Lion's Arch outpost (probably around level 10 or 15), you may want to consider going to the Nightfall campaign just to get a few heroes and play around with some of their builds. It may be useful for you to understand how your party works instead of just your character. For example, there may be some situations where you want one of your allies to have condition/hex removal or maybe the ability to interrupt the enemy or remove enchantments, and you may want to know who can do that and in what way.

Also, speaking of team builds, make sure that you always have 1 healer in a party of 4 and 2 healers in a party of 6 or 8. And a healer is generally a Monk or a Ritualist but, sometimes, they can be Paragons with many defensive shouts/chants, or even Elementalists or Necromancers with Monk or Ritualist as their secondary profession.

But yeah, the 3 campaigns aren't too difficult until the last few missions so you shouldn't worry about having the best builds ever. It's just that sometimes a few skill changes can make things a lot easier.

I haven't chosen a secondary profession yet as I'm not sure what to pick, but the ranger skills, especially the stalker, has been very nice for soloing.

For the secondary profession, I just wanted to point out that you can change it later on in the game.

I would recommend the trilogy and start off with Ele or Necro.Warriors take more skill than others think.Ele and Necro are easier to learn compared to Warrior.Monk and Mesmer are your hardest profs.
