In order to ensure that we are putting out the best possible game, we here at the studio are going all hands on deck - this means that the Live Team will be shifting much of its focus to support the GW2 team. We’re going to be pretty busy, but we will still support the live game with balance updates and bug fixes – there’s also something special planned for our 7th Anniversary. I hope you’re all excited for it, and we’re really looking forward to seeing you all in GW and GW2!

At least the balance skill updates are still in the work. When does the 7th anniversary starts?

oh great, so.... will this be bad news in the future to GW players?
i start to think so
i'm not going to GW2, and may leave GW if nothing happens anymore.....

too bad we know so little, i cant be sure if GW will be better at parts
maybe it stays this way..... well, time will tell, and i hope not long time from now, as then i will start free MMO's to see which fits me best

i hope.... thats all i can do, but also doubt....

Wow. I could see ANet wanting to keep their anniversary dates the same, and they did say way back when that they wanted to release the game very close to the public beta. However, they're horrible with deadlines, and what I've been hearing kind of made me doubt if they'd be ready in time for that. Wonder if pulling all available staff onto the project is a desperate push to make it happen after all....

Anyway, I'm sure once GW2 is released, it will free up a few people to devote some time to GW1. Hopefully we'll still see Elonian Beyond content at some point before all is said and done (unless that's what gets released at the anniversary).

I wouldn't take as much, companies to this a lot, just means Anet needs extra help most likely for the use of getting the game ready for a huge server load come April 20th, given that is the next Beta and will have a lot more people in it.

Most likely when they are done doing what ever on Gw2 they will be back on Gw1.

this... is... awful. They needed more people on the live team, not less. I mean the ratio of people working on GW2 to the people working on GW1 was already sort of rediculous. If we can expect this kind of support in GW2 after the game comes out... well I may have to reconsider whether or not I really want to buy another anet game The lack of regular updates isn't a recent occurance either - it has been going on for a long time now and has only gotten worse.

Last I knew, there were roughly 100 people working on GW2 and 4 on the GW1 live team. My wish would have been for them to double the size of the GW1 team to 8ish, as this would only decrease the GW2 team by 4%. Instead... they are going to increase the GW2 team by 4% and decrease GW1 support even further???

I don't know if the GW2 team and GW1 team are still (or I guess "were" still) composed of exactly this many people (I know it was a 100:4 ratio about half a year ago), but the point still stands.

Seriously? Guild Wars has to have the best content : price ratio of any major non-F2P game in recent history. Are you going to abandon GW to pick up one of the fabulous games that charges $60 for 5 hours of gameplay and $10 DLC for every further 30 mins?

This is most likely a temporary shift, until GW2 is released. It's pretty standard for developers to put all their resources on a single product right before release, so it's not surprising. However, since he did say they would still do balance updates, it's not a total shift. We haven't been abandoned just yet.

GW is the only MMO that I play. If I "abandoned" GW, then I simply wouldn't play an MMO (unless another intriguing F2P came along in the future). I'm not saying just yet that I'm going to abandon GW, but the lack of dev support seriously disturbs me. I'm not just talking about this announcement either. For a long time now, we have had increasingly infrequent updates and a philosophy toward the implimentation of skill updates that I think has gotten increasingly worse. If dev support is so bad now, then whats to say it wont be the same after GW2 expansions are done and GW3 is announced? Are they going to abandon GW2 then and shift the vast majority of their resources away from support? Thats what they've done now, and its really disappointing.

I wasn't even talking about MMOs (I don't play any other either). Can you name another game that still gets free content updates 5 years after its last expansion pack? Most at best have 6 months to a year of support, and it isn't free but instead stuff you pay through the nose for.

Obviously getting less sucks (I want a ranger update PLZKTHX), but pretending that guild wars hasn't had an amazing level of support for the relatively small amount of cash I paid for the game is ludacris. Developers are expensive, you can't deliver an infinite stream of content off a 1 time payment.

uh, ok then. My problem isn't with how many developers they have. I realized thats limited by money. My problem (and I thought i made this pretty clear in my last post) is with how they have split up the developers between GW1 and 2.

And I think Kunder's point was that while it might be nice to have people continually working on GW, it's not as though any of us can complain that we haven't gotten our money's worth, or that we somehow deserve more devs working on it. And also that it makes perfect sense for Anet to have everybody working on the one basket that they're putting all their eggs into.

(Even if that wasn't Kunder's point, it's mine!)

Maybe they'll bring people back to work on GW after GW2 ships. Or maybe they won't. Maybe GW has run its course and it's time for everybody to move on. It sucks for those of us that still like GW and want lots new GW stuff to do, but it's hardly some sort of injustice.

Then thats your opinion and I respect your opinion. My opinion is that discontinuing support (almost at least) for GW1 prior to the release of GW2 reflects poorly on anet, regardless of how much I paid for the game, for the reasons I said in prior posts.

their use of their resources does sound a bit poorly planned.
It seems however, that they dont have enough people to properly handle both games--which does not bode well for gw2 or gw1 in the future.
Though I believe we have all seen this in the past (canceled utopia etc), so I am not so sure why this is such a big surprise.
I can hope that they will still work on gw1 even after gw2's release as others (and I) will still be playing this game and not that one, but I am not holding my breath on that one either as many things we have been told have been changed down the road (too many to name).

I agree. They should just discontinue the game if they're not going to have anyone working on support it rather than leave it idle on.

hmmm, I didn't read anywhere that they had no support for the game, but that those working on content other than the anniversary stuff were pulled for GW2 temporarily. It's obvious there is a huge following for GW1, so nothing anyone says here will change their obvious support that will continue for this game. However, they are a company, one that has to make money to continue either game, so they will need to release another game after 7 years. Something that will continue bringing in the money.
