How are new people suppose to work on HoM?

I have prophecies and EotN, and I beat the former. I'm on the last mission of EotN, and so far its very frustrating to get points. I've read guides all over the internet and it's quite overwhelming.

How is anyone new suppose to rack in enough cash for the armors/weapons/hero uprades? I mean geez I almost beat 2 games and I have 15plat to my name. The only way to make money it seems is to jump into an economy that's already 5 years old. I have no idea what anything is worth or what to even look for.

Any ideas on how to start out?

6 year old economy or not, it just takes a little research and a little patience and you'll find a way to make money. That being said, play through the games a bit. seems you are in a rush to just fill a HoM and not play the game. Just playing through the campaigns can net you at least enough to get an elite set or 2 for that hall, and titles come with actual game play. Some can be purchased, but not enough to get that 30/50 you are likely looking for. Remember many of us took years to accumulate wealth, its not a " here i am, where are my rewards for purchasing the game?" scenario. Play the game, and you'll get there, just be patient.

I've got two tips.

1 - Forget about it. Once you've gotten max armor, decent weapons, and a good set of skills for you and your heroes you don't actually need to spend any more cash. I don't farm and cash rolls in at a satisfactory rate. Just work on things that don't require spending like titles and you'll have a steady flow of income. Of course, farming helps, but it's not necessary unless you want to get heaps of points and do so in a short amount of time.

2 - Do as many of the daily quests as you can. Things like the zaishen bounty/quest/mission/vanquish, wanted, etc. You can kill two birds with one stone doing this. You'll make title progress and get extra rewards for doing it. As I said earlier, money will come in quicker than you think once you cover the basic costs.

My advice would be to play GW for fun as your primary motivation. Remember, all the HoM does is give you some shinies and titles for GW2 (whenever that will be released). If you look upon GW purely as a grind for HoM points, I doubt you will enjoy it.

It takes about a week or two to get into the market or, at least, get a general idea of what is what in the market. Sure, it limits the playtime, cause it's best to just watch Kamadan, go through Argos' Kamadan sniffer and read the PC subforum here, on Guru, but then you're quite ready to get into it.
I've recently made over 800k in two days, having only 100k in the beginning, without even leaving Kamadan. I've done a similar feat (got even more, actually, starting out with 15k) in two weeks, though two years ago. Without mindless farming for hours.
Sure, playing the market is somehow luck-based, and you have to be quick or be dead most of the time, but it's well worth it if you know what you're doing. You can start out with trading elite tomes, not-so-rare weapons and minipets, consumables. But first and foremost: watch, learn, memorize.

Another profitable way is running people through things. Most often, people looking for services here, on Guru, do not look for a rusher, meaning someone who will finish a hard mission in HM in five minutes, but rather for someone who can do it steadily, with decent (but not record-breaking) speed, with them being AFK. I have no idea what are the prices nowadays, but i remember times when Aurora Glade HM runners were really sought for, especially that lots of runners didn't have this particular mission in their offer.
I remember making a 100k total simply by taking five people with me, pinging them the builds i want them to run, and pinging them targets to attack and locations to stand at.

Or you can farm on your own. First of all, as Marty pointed out, there are daily quests - Wanted and Zaishen quests, mainly, but also there's the Zaishen Elite which easily yields 6k Balth faction a day, translating into an easy Zaishen Key (~5k) and 1k faction over.
When it comes to farming per se, you can either exploit the Zaishen Combat, when it's suiting your skills - you can redo the quest over and over with one character (and Random Arena, Jade Quarry and Fort Aspenwood are quite beginner-friendly, though you'll have to learn a completely new gameplay), or you can farm festival items when they drop (the closest is the Halloween i guess). Spend 40h killing Raptors or Vaettirs over and over, and you're set for some time

Find out what the things you pick up salvage into. Iron/granite/dust/fibres/feathers sell for good money. For example, a random white sword dropped from a high level enemy will usually salvage into 6-10 iron ingots. Generally, the higher the merch price for an item, the more materials it'll give you. Salvaging the right stuff gives you a much better yield on your random loot than just merching them.

He has a good point though. The only people it's easy for, are powertraders and people who had a lot of money coming into this whole HoM thing.

Simply playing the game doesn't reward much at all in terms of money, unless you get a mega lucky drop and don't get screwed on it.

Without that, you have to work way too hard to fill out the HoM. Obsidian armor alone is a major hindrance with what really amounts to a terrible drop rate in ecto and shards most of the time.

Also, I'd like to add that sitting around in Kamadan, trading for money is really not playing the game and it's a fast track to a mind numbing bore. I always said when I was willing to sit around staring at trade spam for hours, I should look for a new game to play.

And just IMHO, keep the HoM in perspective. At the moment it only serves to connect the two games, or will when GW 2 releases. Six points will get you the armor,which is what people will notice most; those who notice it at all. GW 2 will have its own goodies and huge amounts of it. Armor and a basic title and you are a vet.

I can see myself as a guild officer taking note of someone who has completed all 3 campaigns. So you will know what we are talking about when we mention how areas have changed or old lore. But take into account an absolute score? Doubt anyone will care. How well you can play your character in GW 2 is what will matter most; and that is hard to predict. Cannot see a HoM score having much to do with that.

So have fun with the game, complete it all. Open up the maps. Get your heroes up to speed. Farm for your basic needs. Toward the end pay attention to your HoM score. Three months after GW 2 comes out nobody will care.

Everything but the 'Honor' monument will take lots of money - minipets, hero armors, character armors, and weapons. But if you start on the honor monument and complete your dailies like Marty suggested, you'll start to have a very agreeable income in no time!

If you get to the point where the points are coming slower in the 'Honor' category and you want to mop up some of the easier points in the other cash categories like pets, etc. then your best bet is to learn a couple easy farms. I just got my boyfriend into the game, so for him we did Vaettir farming during the Grog weekend and also a few of the easy builds for fissure of woe speed clear. I know it can seem overwhelming but I promise if you relax and just try to take a first few steps you'll get the ball rolling in no time, just stop worrying yourself

That's subjective. I actually really like spending time in Kamadan, making money via trading (blatantly: buy low, sell high, or at least with some profit). While GW wasn't designed for it, it's a viable way to spend your time in-game, and it's so much less mind-numbing than farming Raptors for hours and hours, or repeating the snowball quest during wintersday. I love the thrill that comes when you make a particularly good deal, this way or another.

Ah, and also: do NOT buy things you can earn on your own. For example, minipets can't be obtained in any other way than waiting years for presents or just buying them outright, so it's fine to purchase them from other players. The same is true for your armors - there's simply no other way of getting them than just pay the NPC what he wants.
But hero armors and weapons? Just get them on your own. Sure, you might prefer to buy the diamonds and onyx stones for the Destroyer weapons, but get the granite slabs and iron ingots yourself. Do Wanted daily, and get through WiK/Keiran with a couple of characters, so that you have enough Medals of Honor to get the weapons you need. Farm DoA, even if slowly and with heroes, to get at least one gemstone from chest after each part (in short: 15 stones of each kind = Armbrace = Tormented weapon of your choice; or you can buy it for ~22e, which is ~160k).

e: and finally, you have to decide if you're up to purchasing the remaining two campaigns of the game. I don't really see the point of getting into the whole HoM-thingie if you don't have all the campaigns, especially with the latest Winds of Change addition to Cantha, the quests there yield some nice rewards towards Vabbian and Destro weapons.

And don't forget about the 55-60k you can get from the tournament points each new account receives, by turning points into Zkeys and sell to other players. Unless you wanna use them yourself, but that's not recommended until you have a very stable income.

With Zaishen quests , weekend events , 7 hero parties and huge rewards for wintersday and halloween, its actualyl really easy to fill it.

IOW, people who have played and enjoyed the game for years. But, aren't those the people that the HoM was intended to reward? These are people who had invested their hearts in the game and were looking forward to new campaigns, but were suddenly told that they'd have to move to GW2 and start from scratch because major development for GW1 was being halted. The HoM was intended as a token recognition of all the hours that dedicated players spent making characters, defining biographies for them, obtaining just the right gear for them, accumulating wealth, racking up accomplishments, etc.

ANet knew that their GW1 players were being asked to give up a lot. Characters? Gone. Wealth? Gone. Fancy armor? Gone. Titles? Gone. Minis? Gone. Is it any wonder that this thought would upset some of their existing customers? I think it's great that ANet threw in something to ease the pain of transition. It's just a sop, but it does show that they understand what they're asking of their GW1 players and that they care.

So, should it be easy for someone new to just grab a copy of the game and score all those same rewards with a few hours of play? If so, then why not just sell an "HoM Package" in the cash shop. Don't even bother making them play the game, but just let them spend the same money to buy a full set of rewards that can be claimed when GW2 is released. I bet it would sell like hotcakes! Heck, you could even make three packages to suit different tastes: basic package for 30/50, extended package for 50/50, and a supreme package that includes GWAMM. Yeah, that's the ticket!

I'm not some curmudgeon who thinks kids today should be made to walk five miles to and from school, uphill both ways, through six feet of snow. It's a good thing that some of the title requirements have been made a bit easier to meet or made account-wide. But it should still take a substantial amount of effort for a new player to catch up. If a player's only goal is the rewards rather than love of the game itself, then this WILL require a great deal of grind, but I have very little sympathy.

Note: I'm not pointing the finger at the OP here or implying that his motives are unworthy. I'm just speaking of the situation generally. I've only been playing a couple of years myself, and I would consider it pretty unreasonable to expect to have the same level of accomplishment and wealth as someone who has been playing since the beginning.

First Id reccomend you get all the games. Second do what you enjoy. 30/50 HoM is not very difficult if you just do what you enjoy and do a little bit towards that each day.

@BrettM - you'd be right if GW1 was totally ditched and closed after the sequel is released. As far as we're informed by ANet, GW1's existence will continue - and no one forbids you from visiting and using your characters, wealth, fancy armor, titles and minis.
The way it is, though, HoM is just to make more people actually play GW1 until the sequel is released, and to cause more interest around ANet and GW in general.
I'm not saying it's bad - just that the reality, as i see it, is far from your 'old veteran sentimental token of appreciation'-ism.

I'd agree with Marty - forget about it. Why waste all your game time trying to fill up your HoM? The HoM is mostly just something to keep us veteran players interested in GW until GW2 comes out.
The only things you get from the HoM are a bunch of cosmetic things like skins and mini-pets which are sure to be rather common and become rather pointless when there's all the new skins and mini-pets to get in GW2. There's no real benefit or advantage to be gained.
Basically, you'll be wasting all your time trying to do something that basically says "I played GW1" when you play GW2. Well, whoop-de-do!

Why not just enjoy GW1? Then you can actually say "I played GW1".

1. For players with 1 campaign and eotn then i can see some difficulty - if you like the game then try and get the expansions ( eg xmas list etc ) as its worth it.
2. Cash - if you read the farming section you will get ideas as getting cash these days isnt really that hard.Forget power trading as possibly by the time you have the cash and understand the powertrade market properly gw2 will probably be out.For those of us who dont powertrade theres plenty of options ( more with extra campaigns ).
Eotn brought us not only new skills but the ability to make daft amounts of cash with some effort - and yes i mean consets.Ive seen new players who have been shown the way of conset making - make themselves cash easily.Ive even seen one who had 1 months play ( still a newbie ) sell consets and get himself fow armor.
If conset making isnt available for you then theres still other options via materials market and last time i checked ( week ago almost ) plant fibres and granite were nice lil earners.

I started running 2 accounts and the 2nd account was that poor even the beggers were offering money ( jk ) but by working thru factions and nightfall the 2nd account made under 100k easily and i wasnt pouring money from main account into it - it was self earning.

The entire companion monument can be done yourself quite easily, just do the challenge missions.

Minis....they're decently expensive, yes, but you can get the black moa chick through questing (and ~6k for the incubator), and that gets you two points on its own.

Weapons: do the EotN dungeons for that title, you'll collect materials for a destroyer weapon along the way. Do WiK on one character, that's another weapon. Two points there.

Armor: probably the most expensive, no cheap options here. This is where you'll need the money-making tips the most.

The vast majority of Honor points are timesinks, not necessarily money sinks (though some certainly are). That's just the way of it. Everyone else had to do the same stuff to get those monuments, you're just starting late so the climb seems higher than it really is.

Anyway, 6-10 points is an entirely reasonable goal. If you want 30, you're going to need to work a bit. If you want 50, you need to realize that you're aiming for the same goal as the people who have been playing for 6 years. Good luck.
