Hey Guys,

I have a habit of leaving my phone on top of my laptop (an HP G42 whatever) and whenever i receive an SMS, the laptop shuts off abruptly.

The laptop is only a month old. Is this normal???

I tested it on a friends laptop and nothing happened. NOTHING!

WTH! HELP!

that's an interesting problem there... is this on top of the keyboard or is the laptop closed? I would also try to disable any wireless and bluetooth connections on the laptop and see if it still shuts off.

I don't want to sound snide but... don't leave it there?

If you can replicate this over and over again (making sure it isn't coincedence) then my guess is the magnetic field around your phone (which I guess fluctuates when you get a text/phone call) is interfering with your laptop, perhaps momentarily blocking the supply from the power to everything else. I don't know much about phones but this does sound plausible. If you've ever seen the effect a magnet has a TV, it's the same thing, I think.

So if it is something like this then there won't be anything else to do except move your phone or stop getting texts.

@Elder - The laptop is open and the phone is usually on the empty space below the keyboard.

@Cool Name - Yeah I guess for now I wouldn't leave it there. But I tried it with my friend's laptop and nothing happened. I was also thing along those lines you posted but I just have that bad habit of leaving my phone there lol.
