It's happening with most PvP, do you honestly care that much if you can't play for 1 day though

hah more like all PvP
eventually you can get a match though, but if its RA or HA, then you have to go through the same struggle to get to the next one.
i just said i was gonna take a break these next two days, which is what you should do til the servers are back up

hypothetical: if you had a toon in a pve explorable area in HM and you vanqushed the area would it be counted on the server when it went back online?

Any explorable still requires a connection to the server, as your progress is directly saved on the server (for security and anti-cheat reasons), and thus no.

When they disconnect the server, everyone disconnects. Guild Wars simply isn't there anymore, so it would be impossible to vanquish an area while the servers are disconnected, as you would simply loose connection and be unable to reconnect.

I don't see why not, as long as you were still connected. (I did have that odd experience one time last summer, though, when I lagged out right as I was finishing a vanquish of Mineral Springs...thought I would have to do it all over again but when I reconnected, I found the vanquish had been recorded and credited.) PVE servers were still working at about 10:30 pm when I signed off, and I noticed that some outposts were quite busy, doubtless with people trying to get a last project done before the server was taken down.

Hahahaha. Watching the Guild Wars community experience a long down time for maintenance is incredibly amusing.

People can't tolerate 24+ hours without their game?

It was a weekly event for players of WoW and many other games.

But you can't be "still connected" to a machine that's not connected to the net anymore. It's the opposite of when your client lags out and the server holds your "connection" alive for a short time (about 10 mins, I think) so you can reconnect. It can do that because the server is the "brain". It doesn't work in reverse (client alive, server gone) because everything (position, spawns, drops, stats,etc..) is done on the server.

Had a similar strange experience last month doing Moddok Crevice (or however it's spelled... where you kill the Hunger). Killed the monk General and was picking away at the overgrown dog demon. When he was down to about 5%, I lagged out. When I reconnected, I was in Yahnur market (my H/H must have finished him off before my session was killed), but the mission wasn't showing up as being completed. Fixed when I relogged.
