Just pointing out that you can send mails under any Email address. For example, I could send an email under [email protected] or [email protected] for that matter. I don't really understand this language so I cannot help you any further, but everyone could have sent that mail.

the weird thing is, I get it, they can fake the sender... but the link doesnt go to a scam or keylogger or something, it directs to a valid arenanet page, but in chinese :S

Quick translate from google:

Code:
Your account "mail" need to re-set battle.
Your new password "password" fighting

Your password must be entered with the same as shown above. When you use the new password as soon as your old password is invalid.

Thank you for your support for fighting, and we look forward to meet you online!

Dude.. change your gw password. That happened to me, and next, my account was hacked.

Tough luck to the Taiwanese guy that did it, 'cause I got it back on time.

They want you to change your password to the password they sent you in the mail. They are probably trying your email address with the password they sent right now, over and over again, hoping you will change your pass to the one they gave you and voila!, they have access to your account. Once they're in, they immediately change the pass so you can't get back in. Before anet shuts it down, all your stuff is gone.

Err..anyways on topic.

The email looks SO fake, why would you get hacked from an email if you don't even follow the instructions.

I'm kinda confused here...if anyone of you followed that poorly translated email then you are idiots.

Even if the links looked real, *cough*cache poisoning*cough*

I received one of these as well on an email that was linked to a trial account a LONG time ago. I'm sure it's expired, so I ignored it knowing my main is safe.

I've been recieving the same emails, except mines got a stranger twist - it's to a seldom used email that i haven't signed up on anything GW related and it's not the email I use to log into the game.

TBH I have no clue what it's about but some how this seldom used email thats [afaik] unheard of to anet is just weird. And no I don't have a free account, using this email logs me into a screen that says i need to purchase a campaign before i can continue or link an account key.

There's another thread about this same e-mail somewhere else.

Since you didn't do as the e-mail instructed, they don't know your password.

But, they do know your login. That means they can start guessing/brute-forcing for your password.
If you do not have a NCSoft master account, you should immediately create a fresh e-mail account with gmail and change your GW login to that account (and then never use the e-mail for anything else ever again).
If you do have a NCSoft master account, you're RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOed, since you cannot change your GW login once it's been bound to NCSoft. I suggest contacting Gaile, Regina, Support, and anyone else who might listen and beg them to help you change your login.

We honestly shouldn't have to do all this with the email stuff. It's supposed to be simple to setup and play. ANET needs to beef up security themselves. I refuse to do all this work. As far as brute force goes, brute force targets idiots who use things like pet names and their favorite foods for their passwords. If you have a password that resembles no real known word in a dictionary attack and its made up of random numbers and letters with symbols too (and maybe one word within it, BF isn't gonna figure out the rest), chances are you are never going to get hacked, isn't this more simple than doing all of that other stuff. Change every once in a while.

I would make something so complicated that you cant even remember it, so each time you login you have to refer to a piece of paper to which you wrote it down on. When the password becomes easy to remember for you (to where you don't even stop to remember what to type in), it's time to change it. Rinse and repeat.

Wow, this is actually brilliant attack. Why try to brute password? Why try to keylog it?

If you can just ask them nicely to change password to what you want.

I don't know Chinese, but I'm guessing those characters are. Funny thing is, I'm also betting that the people like me receiving these can't read Chinese either. Even if someone was stupid enough to do it, they're also protected by the ignorance of not knowing the language! Oh the irony...

You can render anything sent to you useless if you are like me. Just change your password after 20 min. of gameplay or so. Reformat your computer every 2 weeks to prevent any malicious items from stealing your newly created passwords (Do it at your own risk). Reformating is fast and easy if you do it enough time. I probably have gone over 40 hard drives already. You can afford a new hard drive, but you can't afford a new account. Since there is an emotional attachment between you and the account, it's recommended that you sacrifice the harddrive since it's cheaper to get a new hard drive every 1 month. It's also free if you have scholarship money from school and such .

Sarcasm?

Why buy a new hard drive? You can simply reformat the current one. GW doesn't mean that much to me to do any of that, to be honest.
