The Nice Hacker

At times like this when it's all doom and gloom, especially on these forums, I thought it would be nice to share this story that my brother and I experienced recently.

My brother, after quite a lengthy break, decided he felt like playing GW again but when attempting to log in to his account, he was faced by the error that his password was incorrect. We contacted support and after quite a lengthy series of emailing and receiving we eventually managed to get it right. We changed the password and after attempting to login with this new password, another error message popped up. "This account has been blocked due to account issues, code=045".

We straight away contacted support once more and the very next day he could access his account. When he logged in, though, we discovered that someone had created a new character in his account... a permasin. What makes this story even better is that all of the ectos and all of the money this hacker had farmed were now my brothers. Thanks to the hacker, my brother is quite a lot richer He was even kind enough to leave all of my brother's characters intact and didn't delete anything.

We've learnt from this experience but my brother was also lucky enough to have the nice/stupid hacker choose him

So for how much money/gold did your brother sell his account when he quit?

Hackers don't play on hacked accounts, they steal the good stuff and move on looking for the next victim.

lol typical... but that's the thing, he didn't. At first I thought he was kidding but he wasn't. We both agree that GW is one of our favorite games of all time but we both took a break as it was getting quite stale. We both chose to return but as I have mentioned, he couldn't access his. So someone somehow managed to create a permasin and used his account to farm but strangely didn't touch his other characters.... sounds unbelievable but it's true

Sounds more like your brother gave away/sold his account and now used cheap trix to get it back. But, if it truly was hacked, it does seem a bit weird that the hacker chose to keep the account. Most hackers arent that dumb. :-)

Well I thought I'd share this story as I found it quite unbelievable myself (I'm not a naive person) and it's your choice if you believe it or not...

While I suppose I would be happy if I found a bunch of ectos and gold on my account, doesn't it make you feel.... dirty?

Not entirely true, I got hacked a while ago and lost ~1.1mil in gold and about 150 zkeys. However the Hacker didn't change my password, didn't delete any of my characters, didn't steal any of my items and actually left a few items in my storage that hadn't previously been there as well as changing the skill bar on my Assassin, implying that he played on that character.

Now I have no money though

Well... a keylogger program could have captured his email and password. But I will say this with a lot of confidence: Your brother did something to allow this to happen. He either 1) gave away/sold his account, 2) left his account info where someone else could find it, 3) told someone his account info, 4) installed a 3rd-party program that contained a keylogger, or 5) your brother is lying.

Hackers don't magically and randomly capture accounts. You have to give them access to the keys to your car for them to steal it.

That metaphor doesn't really work, considering hot-wiring and all.

Oh and OP, cool story,

He took the good stuff, which in your case was around 2 million in gold and z-keys. Fast and easy, he didn't need your items. They seem to put some random crap instead to make it look like a normal trade when they transfer the gold to avoid being noticed by Anet. The changing of the skillbar is prolly to create the illusion it was the rightful owner using the account at the time.

A lot of RMTers steal accounts to play on them. Hacker is not a profession, it's a set of skills and tools.

You do know how many idiots there are on the internet, right? Back when I was like 10, my Runescape account was hacked. I was a level 80 something with about 2 mil. I stopped playing, without contacting support. A year later? I looked up my account, noticed I was level 110 or so. Contacted support, got my account back. Not only were all of my levels boosted drastically, I had a nice ~50 mil with a dragon chain.

Moral of the story? Don't assume everyone on the internet is smart enough to not play on a hacked account.

Cool story bro. Wonder how many ecto/gold the hacker left on there. Makes me wish someone would come along and hax my account <.<.

It could have been a hacker selling the account to someone else who didn't know it was hacked (I know, sad, stupid and naive)

I'm suprised you're the only one who got this. Thats exactly what happens. The hacker plays another game and finds guildwar players who play the same game as him. But the hacker wants guildwar fans who hate the other game they play/used to play. So they make a deal to trade account for account.

Happens all the time. I know people who have trade diablo accounts, warcraft (win) accounts and other game accounts for guildwar accounts or items. I'm sure someone somewhere got something that was hacked.

This is why I would never trade for a account. Because I don't know if the person trading me stole it and I do not promote hacking/stealing.

Oh and because its against the ToS. *cough*
