Something I will never understand

This may seem like a QQ thread, but it's more of a questioning of the psychological working of the general mob mentality in deciding what is and isn't popular. The main question behind a series of various questions all relating back to this simplified question is this "Why Do People Automatically Assume That Expensive Means That It Looks Good?".

Many people when I try to ask them this question in a nice and inquisitive and intelligent way I usually get the same response "what are you fugging jealous?", and my response is always "no, i was just wondering" to which their reply is always "You're just jealous because you cannot afford it".


But I could never understand the mentality behind some of he choices people make in this game simply because it's more expensive..


Though i know that even after posting this I will never get a straight answer. There are many items in the game that are expensive in the game simply because they look good, and I can completely understand this (celestial compass ftw) But there are an even greater number of items that just aren't.

Those who know me well enough and have seen my collection which is rather expansive (more in the way of ranger armors and weaps) Will point the finger at me and reply with "hey you're doing the same thing, you buy alot of expensive things too" to that i have this response, i may own alot of expensive things, but that cause I believe they look good, I like my items simply based on looks and not on price, and that's why I'm occasionally seen strolling the town in my shing jea armor rather than my fow or 15k suits (sneakers on my ranger ftw). But i actually personally enjoy my items, what about the people who really don't but just buy it anyways because they believe it's "leet"?

So why is it that people buy things simply because they are expensive?

Compensating for something?

Because your opinion might not be the same as everyone elses?

I mean god forbid your opinion isn't absolute. And yeah it is a QQ thread don't even pretend it's not.

Just to show off, really. I mean some people may like what they wear, but yeah most of it is honestly just to show off. People like to flaunt off how "dedicated" they are to the game.

It's the same reasons people buy expensive chars/clothing/etc.: To flaunt off and stand out from the crowd (although that last reason is questionable).

Still it doesn't even effect you. Only reason this annoys me is because it seems like you're posting this to get attention. You ask a question that you answer yourself...

I don't save up gold just to wear the most expensive thing, I save up gold because I like how it looks. And I liked how the dread mask looked when I first saw it which lead to me saving up for it and buying it.

i buy everything, but thats because i play the game to collect the armors (i have every warrior and monk armor set now, yay!.. and tons of duplicates on my favs -_- lol). I only wear what i think looks nice.. and tbh.. i like black and white dye on a lot of stuff.. but i dont think it makes me anything but tough looking.. ya know.. cuz i be a wareeur :P

i'll wear 1.5k armor if its what i like (and i do). in fact.. my two fav sin armors are 15k canthan and 1.5k shing jea, both black!

Unfortunately, you're an exception. Since there's no other meaning behind rare weapons and expensive armors, they - like titles - are used as an "indication of one's status".

There's also another large mob mentality, that people *only* buy expensive armors for the above mentioned reasons and not because they appeal to the player.

Are you saying my sin is a piece of crap? I am poor as dirt but I saved up and farmed my ass off for this cause I liked it, not because it was cheap, hell I WISH it was cheep so I didn't have to farm for it. In my opinion it looks good on him.

like.. i dont farm. i dont do elite missions, gold pretty much means squat to me in GW. unless im saving for something. and when i have items, im playing since near day 1. i have a fair few expensive bits. but again i cant say i can afford everything i want. but what i have i like.. because its MY opinion..
i dont do "what the masses" think.. no builds. not ursan. nothing.
Its MY opinion. i like the voltiac spear. i like FoW armours. I have nothing to Show Off My wealth besides the armour i wear. and i dont even have a set of FoW. Its just 1 set of 15k for each of my 3 pve chars. and they have the weps i think look good. not what the Masses think looks good.
But even with all this. i still consider myself rich.
because i have WHAT I WANT.

Again, part of the exception. A lot of people wear rare weapons/expensive armors just to look "leet n' skilled". Others use/wear them because they like the look and in you're case it fits (and it fits *damn* well!)

In fairness, a response like "what, are you jealous?" clearly indicates that those people are in it for the prestige.

But why is this surprising at all? Titles don't improve how your character looks at all, yet people are still chasing them. Why shouldn't the same apply to armor?

It's that assumption that's the problem.

People automatically assume such gear is for status.

Anyway you can't be analytical about personal taste.

It's as varied and diversified as the player base, of which you are just one person.

It's not really specified that he was targetting "everyone" who buys expensive armors and rare weapons.

I guess at the end of the day it's a no-brainer slapping a 75 ecto price tag on an item will attract those wishing to attain status but it's a pity so many instantly assume thats the only motivation for acquiring such gear.

I don't believe it to be the only motivation for getting said gear, as I had said, ALOT OF PEOPLE only do it because of this motivation, I never said all people do it, I personally have quite a few fow sets and 15k sets, and a rather expansive bow collection, I chose these items cause i liked the look of them personally. My question was more directed at those people who do infact buy things simply because of price and an attempt to intensify the swelling in their e-peen.
