Alright, so i remember when GW just came out and we were all noobs in pre. I actually thought pre was the whole game. Looking at the map, i thought it would be short and stupid. I was mistaken.
But anyway, i remember i couldn't play yet cuz my comp was messed up, so i read the manual a billion times. I tried to make up what professions i would be based on their descriptions. I said "hmm... i wanna be a mes/ele for fast casting spells. I also thought mesmers would be totally different. Like who new that illusion would be health degeneration and stuf like that?? i was dissapointed by this. Also, i thought i'd make a ranger/necro to have a pet and minions for lots of support. turns out no builds exist that use this strategy well. (unless of course i make one)
So i wanna know... what did you think the game was gonna be like based on what u read in the instruction manual? Honestly, i though the whole storyline and profession system was pretty cool, until the expansions came out. i think there shoulda been just 5 professions, the original 6 -mesmers cuz they dont fit in. then when sins and rits came, they just ruined it. of course, they were totally imba cuz they were new, and they dont fit in with GW. then dervs and paras came, and dervs were kinda of a wild idea, paras kinda weird cuz of the whole "godlike" thing, but they fit in better, i mean a warrior w/ a spear shouting the help the team. much better idea than the other 3 profs.
So anyway... what are your comments. Do you think they went to far a ruined what you thought would be a cool game? Or do you just follow whatever is the best and try and be the best and have no fun (ursanway)
When GW just came out...

I honestly thought it was going to be just like diablo 2 but with secondaries. which at the time I was confused about having a secondary. Not having permanent attributes and armor with attribute requirements (for the most part) excited me the most because putting points in a character permanently like many mmorpgs scare me.
Also I was a little disappointed when the cripstorm idea on the box along with the shitty build that the warrior had along with a bow (who obviously wasn't using it for pulling) didn't work at all. But now I'm glad that M shower warriors fail.
About the question though, Yea I think assassin's rits dervs and paras kinda ruined the game. Love to play them but they just weren't thought about hard enough before being implemented. Don't know why they made an assassin class when they obviously didn't want a fast killing machine, or the rt primary where it sucks, or the replacement warrior (dervish) or a party buffer who is only wanted as an imbagon. Mesmers I beleive though, are awsome and i'm glad they are a core profession.
I don't follow trends unless its farming. And I CERTANLY don't use ursan. I just make fun builds.

I believe that mesmer can own most of the professions if used correct so stop talking of mesmer like it's noob or sth..
And new professions gave us the ability to find new builds for farming, pvp and other stuff.. Imagine what would happen if there were only 5 proffesions! All characters would look like the same due to lack of variety in professions and 1 big nerf = boom! we wouldn't even be able to farm basic areas cause teams using 5 professions would be forced to exclude 1 and they wouldn't be able to replace that profession (i.e replacing a munk with a resto rit)
And i'm not saying that gw exist coz extra professions exist, i'm saying that they did not ruin the game

having never played another online game (the only other computer games I have played are the sid meyer ones like civ)....I thought there would be a lot of killing and stuff---my husband convinced me to play after I had watched him doing the ring of fire quests (back then it was hard to do, and PUGs actually took all of the classes
)....pre was very pretty and I didnt want to leave it...ah the good ole days.

I'd dabbled in plenty of online games, so I expected to make a level 99 R/W (so I could use a sword when enemies got close XD) with a bow that does 500+ damage.
So when I got to post-Searing, I was psyched about it, but I couldn't figure out why I couldn't solo 5-10 enemies at once like I could in D2.
Also, as soon as I got to post-searing, I wanted to sell my collector armor from pre-Searing, so what do I do? I advertise "WTS AWESOME COLLECTOR ARMOR DYED GREEN- BARELY USED." Someone, who was really just trying to be nice, PM'd me and said "Dude, you can't sell armor. It's customized to you." I said "No it isn't." He said "I promise you it is." I kept insisting that it wasn't, even though I knew very well that it was. Eventually, he gave up. I felt like such a badass.
.... If I'd remembered his character name, I'd PM him and apologize, and thank him for attempting to help me not look like an idiot.
I also got into an argument with a guy because I refused to believe that singed gargoyle skulls were worth 75g each (that was a lot of gold to me at the time. I thought I was rich at 1k).
I was a real douche back then.

I thought classes would have much less differences than they actually did; for example that primary/secondary was less about using the primary's build, but more about the primary's benefit (armour, energy, etc). For example Warrior and Necromancer; I'd thought that a W/N would be a heavily armoured summoner but with less mana (energy) and that a N/W would have less armour but more energy. While this is true, the builds themselves are not - a W/N cannot run minion master. Though a few builds do allow a primary to take over another class's role, for the most part primary determines what builds you run.
In short, I thought class differences were minor :P When in actuality they are extremely significant.

i thought a W/E would rock, because i could cast FIREBALLS, the go mash people with my hammer.
then my friend told me warriors sucked, so i made a ranger with armour of earth and ward against melee with some block stances and attack skills, which i advertsed as an "Anti-Physical" ranger.
and this game still rocks.

I remember taming a Melandru's stalker on my warrior (my first character) because I thought he would contribute to my damage. I never was a wammo but I did think Troll Ungent was da shit and carried it with me everywhere. It did say rangers used survival skills in the manual so I figured the combo was gonna rock. What is funny is that people told me the pet was a bad idea for a warrior.. but IWAY then appeared and I was set to go! lol
Pugs picked up every profession and we just played to have a good time. Nowadays people (myself included unfortunately) play pretty seriously and only the best builds and certain professions get PuG love.
I also remember being surprised by the "low" level cap. I thought GW was going to be like WoW.. yup

E/R!
i wanted to use earth spells because [earthquake] and [ward against melee] seemed so cool. as well as a pet, that was awesome. i remember getting my melandru's stalker and using ice spear to kill that gargoyle mage in presear. i was always so sad when the poor thing died. then i got a spider... and capped [ferocious strike] and was never out of energy! then factions came and i got a red crab...
but somewhere in there IWAY came along and ruined my perception of pets... :/

I came to GW a little late, it had been released for about 4 months before I jumped in I think.
For me it was all about the Mesmer. I'd always been a fan of support-niche characters, but I could never find any that fit perfectly for me. Bards and support healers had always left me wanting more... or perhaps 'less' really... more specialisation.
I was so excited reading the manual on the car trip home ^_^ My first ever character was a mesmer, and I've never looked back.
Whilst I certainly enjoyed the addition of the new classes, I was guilty of running some truly terrible Me/A I.W. builds.

um mesmers rock, rits are cool, sins i hate because they are too japanimationy and not enough like real assassins(and i realize it's a fake video game but still, I can't find flamboyant skinny kids running around with knives in their PJS very frightening.) Dervs and paras are cool too
paras are more archangel like id say.
paras are more archangel like id say.i thought i could use a bow with my monk at first, did not use any bow skills just thought i could have a cool bow and be a monk.... secondly i thought mesmers where actually going to be able to make illusions, and change the environment, and trick enemies into doing there biding...
as far as the new stuff yes it did brake the game and they have yet to fix it. i mean non block able teliporting and a aoe melee attack and unremovable shouts and weapon spells. they need to make shadow stepping have more drawbacks, and have ways to remove both shouts and weapon spells.

When I hit post for the first time, and zoomed out, I thought to myself, "WTH, how am I supposed to walk all over that?!"
Also, I thought ele fire spells would hurt your teammates, so the ele would have to yell out when they were casting a spell so the warriors could run out of the way of the flying meteors. Silly me.
