Guild Wars 2 PvE is an MMO (PvP = normal Guild Wars)

After reading THIS new info on GW2, I can't help but feeling that GW2's PvE play will be a lot more similar to conventional MMOs, only with instanced missions as the main thing carried over from GW1.

Have a look at this quote:

Quote:
6. Ample character development

The original Guild Wars only had 20 character levels - not enough for many players. Because of this, the level cap will be raised drastically; according to Jeff Strain, they are even thinking about completely leaving out a level cap. It is certain that you will be leveling your character over hundreds of hours. Whether or not classic attributes like strength, mobility, and vitality will be used? "We don't know yet", replies Strain.
Hundreds of hours? I guess no one really knows for sure, but even with the sidekick system, people will still be reluctant to share party space with lower-leveled players, as it's a psychological thing. Higher levels will be synonymous with more experience and those with lower levels, even the more skilled people, might get pushed aside. Luckily, the developers mentioned the ability for characters to complete the game solo (this could either mean entirely solo or just with AI).

Another bit of worrying info:

Quote:
However, he can confirm that Guild Wars 2 will feature a "robust" crafting system. In addition, equipment like weapons and armor will play a more important role than before
Yeah, a new crafting system sounds wonderful, and might well be. But what happens when those with the best, most powerful weapons/armor (obtained through time rather than skill) start to discriminate against those with weaker equipment? Will power scaling modify the weapon and armor attributes too?

Nevertheless, the closest thing to normal GW is the PvP system, which sounds like it will be very similar to GW1...

Quote:
5. Player vs. player (PvP)

Player versus player battles (PvP) are an important element of Guild Wars 2. Pure PvP characters won't exist any more - you will only play with roleplaying characters. Brand new: PvP battles between the various worlds (read more about worlds in fact 2)! There will be special, open PvP areas in which the players from different worlds will fight against each other and battle for specific strategic positions. The emerging battles will be colossal, as any player will be able to participate without commitment.
Basically AB but more dynamic. This sounds like it could be very fun and a nice break from any possible grind in PvE, as well as acting as a stepping stone between the two. The part marked in bold here worries me slightly, and will probably function as an NPC roleplaying characters talk to in order to enter PvP mode (this way, characters become PvP/PvE characters simply based on where they are).

Quote:
Due to their love of e-sport and as an alternative to the relaxed World PvP, guild battles (GvG) will be present in Guild Wars 2 as well. To keep GvG fair, all participating players will have their characters temporarily modified to a set level, so all abilities, skills and equipment items will be the same as anyone else participating in the battle.
Great - no problems here.

I wonder how Anet will keep this system from getting confusing? Think about it - when the character enters PvP, they either get an upgrade or downgrade in power depending on their level. Weaker characters get an temporary boost only to find themselves frustrated when they return to normal PvE, but the top, godlike mega-ursan Norn players at level 500 with one-hit-KOs in PvE get that taken from them, leading to possible frustration and division of the 2 types of play.

Either way, the hardcore PvPers have no reason to worry (except balance?) but the rest of the playerbase has to wait and see just how similar GW2's PvE is to the conventional MMO.

They will probably do a decent enough job of eliminating the majority of problems. Issues, like those the OP presented, will more likely than not be present.

i thought the original approach to Guild Wars and early on the game was perfect but I think they started listening to the community too much instead of trusting their own ideas and we started to see shift towards grind and non essential things in the game

I think they'll do great with Guild Wars 2

It does sound different from Guild Wars 1 but I'm happy with the changes that are being made and from what i've read above

Solo play sounds great, i thought the original pre-searing area was perfect and very solo oriented and i had more fun in that area playing alone or when i wanted bring another person with me

Its like WoW....people can hate the game all they want but if you have played it you'll see there are options like that to how you want to play the game, you can play solo or with a group

I think thats perfect so far

Confusing to whom? Since the vast majority of players stick to one side of the game forever, it isn't a big deal to them. People are already coping well with the skill split in GW1.

Confusing to Anet? Sure, and that is why a skill and equipment split across the two game types is the best solution simply because PvP and PvE balance are either not compatible or beyond the means of Anet's skill balancers. GW1 has proven this. Now they can balance the two worlds independently, preferably by different teams who care about the gametype they are balancing.

Everytime I read that I completely lose interest in GW2.

I think it's more a mix of conventional MMO and GW1 features, with a touch of completely new concepts/ideas on top. I'm looking forward to trying this out, but am just a little concerned about some of the potential problems along the way.

You don't know a game until you play it. We'll see, the expectations are high.
I'll buy it and I will buy Diablo3 too and will continue with the game I like the most.

Didn't they state in an earlier article that while the lavel cap would be removed the effect of levels after a certian cap would be for bragging rights only. If that is the case while you may have puts in hundreds of hours to get your toon to level 100 it may still have the same abilities, as far as attributes go, as a leve 20 toon.

I do remember reading something to that points but can't for the life of me remember where.

yup. I'll read the reviews here and other forums before I spend any money on GW2 same thing I did with GWEN. (the preview 100% convinced me not to buy GWEN but since all guildies had it I was forced to buy so I can play with them)

Many things don't appeal to me but they're sooo tightlipped that no one really knows what to expect.
I'm not going to be struck by a wow factor because of cool graphics until I know what I'm getting myself into.

For now I still enjoy GW1. (GW2 is not even close to release people)

What's wrong with you people?
It looks like many forumers don't want a change at all.
For example, Anet is adding new stuff to the game, then the QQers immediately show up and rant/cry about it.
And now people complain about GW2, even though it isnt' even out yet.
GW2 will be a whole different game that will possibly have grind but if you don't like it, then I suggest you stay with GW1, nuff said.

i think all i can say it anet is going to screw up on Skill < Leveling. if they are gunna have higher lvls they need to have a cap or else this wont be different from what alread been offered by other companies. guildwars set it self apart with limiting a character on what it can do by only using 8 skill and a set number of attribute points.it isnt supposed to be non stop lvl grinding and no matter what you do, there is AlWAYS sumone STRONGER then you. in gw1, there can only be sumone that is BETTER then you. which is a better reality then thinking your gunna get better if you level grind.

I have to think the most concerning thing about this is the hundreds of hours. Here is the thing... if it levels like WoW then it might not be so bad, but if it takes as long to level as it does in a game such as FFXI then I'm not interested. I don't mind the grind as long as I can feel like I'm getting somewhere.

I'm also really interested in seeing how many instances there are. I hated worrying about having kills stolen in other games. I hope there are enough instances to keep that from being a problem.

Hundreds of hours leveling a character? Sorry but that's the thing that totally smacked me in the face. There's "ample" and "endless" IMO... I'm really afraid it's gonna look like the following: "My lv140 pwns the **** outta your lv75".

And if you set up your own attributes, PLEASE keep the attribute system the way it is - I don't wanna waste cash respec'ing or worse - having to make 20 characters t play 20 different builds.

Instanced world...
Cons: possible PKing, spawn camping
Pros: finally will be able to kick a-holes outta my party! >_>
