I... I'm going to cry! We're back (on April 10th/11th)! Thank you, ANet, NC Interactive and NCTaiwan! Now I shall continue to bug my non-GW friends to play GW, or at least GW2 when it's out.

I am curious about the lag they will encountered due to this move. Good call on NCSoft part and hope everything works out.

That was my first thought, too. Does this mean they're actually going to be on servers physically located stateside, or just that their account information will be stored stateside? Because pinging across the world, even at near light speed, can still be relatively slow when you're talking about network latency in a game that requires nearly real-time decision making.

GW server structure serves this: it picks server that gives you best ping.

It works like this: It checks geographical location of all party members and find best server for majority of party.

It means that someone with H/H connecting from taiwan in American districts gets asian server (probably located in taiwan).

Party with 8 taiwanase people which are member of Us districts will too, get taiwanese server.

When people from different regions mix and match it gets more interesting. I am not entirely sure how server is chosen, but it looks like it it compromise location that should give all people equal ping. Thats because of PvP. It does not work that great thou as i.e. in EU vs. US battles there is no real in-middle-of-atlantic server

For example, person which creates new district creates it for his location.

Popular misconception is that there are Europe servers, us server and international server, which is bogus. Just like belief of some people that PvE and PvP or even some areas have specific server. Yes, vast majority of eu people will have their instances in European-sited servers, but that is not because there are eu-only servers.

you can have lone person h/hing with america based account, pvp international battle, some russian pug and dis1 of taiwan kamadan on same server. It is just unlikely.

Weak point is login which is kinda semi-centralized and another weak point is that it wont reassign your server if server you were appointed to is faulty.

---

disclaimer: this is what i learned when i did some research to gws server architecture and after reading some articles. Guess someone at anet might have good laugh at some or all of it.

What do you mean buying? All they need to do is make a website advertising "Guild Wars Hacks", load it up with keyloggers, and they get all the accounts they'll ever need. Sometimes they have so many that they don't even bother to take over an account until months after a player got infected.

If they are getting moved to the US server, will they still be able to input in Chinese or will they be restricted to English now? Will regular US accounts be able to input Chinese now?

That's what I'm wondering...

The website had a bunch of pictures showing the process of adding a key to an account. I think the move to U.S. servers is on an "opt-in" basis. That means requiring you to change your names to English characters (and not being able to use Chinese in American local chat) is conceivable.
