8800 gts 512 vs 9800 gtx

I'm planning to get the 9800gtx for my new system, but all over the place I'm reading that it's just an overclocked gts512. I'm planning on overclocking, so I don't see the need of getting something that's factory oc'ed. Is it true that it's just an oc'ed gts? Please don't advise me to wait till the geforce 100 series, I'm running a pavilion with a 7300le 128mb in it, I need a new system.
Are there any benefits if I get the 9800gtx (I know it won't be out till the 1st of april, but I'm willing to wait), like dx10.1 support, or a better cooler? Anything that's known already, before it's been brought out.

Honestly I'd say go with the 512 GTS, that card is amazingly great.

More accurately the 9800GX2 is two 512 GTS's slapped together, so it's kind of double the performance in one card, but you PAY for that, 600$.

512 GTS's are like 250-260$+ rebates on some websites now, so personally I'd say go with that.

And I'm buying myself one eventually, I know that for sure.

Well in that case I'll have to look up reviews on it and see what specs it has before I can say much, but still the GTS is great for the price, I think it's kind of future proof as well.

If you aren't one of those people who always has to have the best and newest parts every time they are released, then it wouldn't be a problem.

I've seen a few people talk about it being an overclocked GTS. Now if that is the case then you should just buy a GTS and overclock it.

I'm not really that kind of a person, but I hardly ever upgrade, so I wanna get something really good, like a gtx or something. I'm not considering a gx2 though, that's just ridiculously priced.

any card will do just fine for you what you should just take into consideration is how much you are willng to spend on the cards themselves.

to be honest with you im still running a 6800ls PCI Express and still able to run games such as HL2, Oblivion, FEAR, Crysis perfectly fine at good graphics settings and decent framerates.

well along with the price of the card, you're gonna have to add prolly around another $150-200 USD for a compatible PSU. (for GTX/GX2)

I'll be getting it together with a new motherboard, processor, ram and psu, so that won't be a problem. I'm not getting it all at once, I'll be upgrading over a small period of time. I'm willing to spend about 300 euros on a graphics card, that's why I was considering the 8800gtx. But now the new gtx is coming which is going to cost that much, I switched to that one. Now I'm willing to pay for it, but not waste it. If a gts512 is the same thing but just underclocked, why would I get a 9800gtx? That's why I want to know the actual differences. And I'm also considering a 3850 x2, I think it's the same price range, am I correct? But I really prefer NVidia, don't know why

Honestly I'd wait until the 9800GTX comes out.

Because then everyone will run huge reviews and reports on it, and you can really find out which is more worth it.

yes they are in and around the same price, but I, (like you) am turned-on to nvidia. last I looked the 98gtx was speculated to be like $300/360 USD.

my previous post was just pointing out the required 6 pin AND 8 pin pcie.

in all reality, unless someone has actually got their hands on one for performance/bench tests (trusted peeps) no one can judge it...yet...

OK, im getting a 650tx or a 750 zalman with heatpipe psu, so that won't be a problem. Not planning on sli, so i'm getting a p5k-e. Will it support dx10.1 though?

Summary: It basically is an OC'ed GTS, but then again, only cherry picked G92's can hit 2200 effective memory clock. And this is just stock, so in reality, 9800 GTX OC'ed > 8800 GTS OC'ed

@ admael, TY for the post(musta missed it if you posted it before). I'm wondering if a Q6600 (oc'd of course) would pump out that bench. the price on those X9650's are just to salty for me. -_o

This bench is on stock, and Intel's Penryn quads make me cry, because when I benched the E8500, the results were NEGLIGIBLE to the X9650.

Yes, a Q6600 OC'ed with any of the G92 cards would easily break 14k.
With a X9650 and 2 G92's at stock, I hit 13k
With a X9650 and 2 G92's OC'ed, I hit spoiler.

The 9800gtx can be overclocked higher than the 8800gts.

The 9800GTX is a completely different design from the 8800GTS. If anyone tells you otherwise, tell them to talk to me...

Why don't you wait for the GTX 280 or 260 to be released on June 18th? Seriously, 4 more days... I mean, I think it is worth the wait.

The 8 series is fundamentally different from the 9 series though. Whoever or wherever you heard that they are the same, get that theory out of your heads asap. They have some similarities, but the core design is on a different fab, and an entirely new press. I have both schematics on my PC, and I can tell you in 100% certainty, they are radically different in many areas.

I can't wait until the new GTX 280 is out.. It will be fun to see what it can do, I really hope it's a big step-up from the 9 series.

I can honestly tell you that the GTX 280 makes a 9800GTX look like child's play. I put a single one through some testing when I got home from recovering yesterday, and it slaughtered 2x 9800GTXs in SLi in 80% of the tests.

So do you think that two GTX 280's can scale up Crysis pretty good? (Just using it as a basis for intensity.)

I probably will never afford one soon unfortunately, but who knows.
