In the GW2 FAQ, I was horrified to read that Arenanet are considering implementing "10 or less" professions. This means that there is a (frightening) possiblity that one of our beloved professions is given the chop! Now, of course, I can't see warriors or monks dissapearing, but what would? I have the grim impression that these professions are endangered:
Mesmers - This profession requires a brain to play, and sadly some people do not understand them... Personally I am a mesmer addict and would become suicidal if they dissapeared in GW2.
Paragons - I also like this profession for its originality... sadly because they can't solo easily, nor farm, people dislike them and Paragons are a rare species in Guild Wars.
Assassins - Now, I think people's assumptions of them is unfair. People who are not particularly competent equip 7 attack skills and expect to survive on Shadow Refuge with 3 Shadow Arts. Because of this people assume they have no defence (when in actual fact they have a much greater defence then they are given credit for) and are shunned in PvE.
Ok, this is somewhat biased as I've judged this from a mainly PvE perspective, but what do you think? Of course, we can always hope that Arenanet makes the smart choice and doesn't remove any of the professions... that would be sheer folly...
Which GW1 profession is for the chop for GW2?

Paragons should get the chop. Most people don't want to play them as they have trouble finding groups, because idiot PuGs think they suck - but those that do play them have access to godmode. PvE should never have had an easy (or, easier) button.
Either Anet should up the difficulty (which i sincerly hope) or atleast try to balance the professions.

I suspect Assassin and Paragon are likely candidates for the chop, though Dervish may be a candidate as well. How many paladin classes can they have, after all? Mesmer is almost a guarantee for being dumped, since so few people can/want to play it well.
I imagine/hope Rits would stay as they are the only healing class besides monks.

Don't worry about Mesmers for a second.
Mesmers have a lot of work put into their skill balancing and armor, and Gwen became a mesmer.
Assassins i'd assume are also safe, they fit a MMORPG gameplay. (Sorta like Champions in LOTRO but more dedicated)
Dervishes might not be safe.
Paragons are the least safe.
I really hope Ritualists stay.
(Heres another thought. What if all the proffessions have new names and are styled differently?)

Personally, I think all 4 new profs should be chopped, I was looking over Core and Proph skills and comparing them to Factions and NF skills, and it seems as things went along, things became more and more overpowered, or so it seemed at the time, this was before I owned Factions and NF, so yeh.

I think some profession will merge into other professions!
Like paragons will disappear but that warriors will be given a spear mastery and you can choose to use spears..
Ritualists disappear and they give necromancers a line to cast spirits. and mesmers a line to cast those buffs.
Maybe a stalker/thief profession which you can modify to be either a ranger or an assasin..
and maybe they will ad a few to get the number back to 10..
Its not at all sure that if they will have 10 professions that then it will be the 10 we have in gw today.

I suspect Assassins are in danger - I think I recall when GW2 first comes out that Cantha won't be playing much of a part (no contact with the continent for a while) and as the profession first appeared there I would put it at risk - same for ritualist
I hope they go back to 6 classes just give them more depth - I think some form of ritualist skills on the necromancer would be nice.
But I do hope the classes are implemented in a different way. Not sure what though.
Maybe no secondary classes - but you can use any skill from any other class but just at disadvantage - say 20% less damage , 20% less effective , 50% longer casting times , longer recharge.
Maybe each skill should have 2 definitions - one when its used by a primary and one when its used by anything other than primary

Maybe they sent all of their mesmer power to me... Oh look! Another Req 8Chakram. Oh and a Domination Staff!
Why are they going to the merchant?
Because its the average player that hates mesmers, not Anet so much.
Eff... Just got Crippling Anguish'd.

With any luck, anet will wisen up and delete sins, rits, gons, and dervs. That way there are only 6 proffesions, each have thier own primary role, and they can spend much more time going in depth into what that role means, rather than adding more roles.
Think of MtG, where they suddenly one set decided to at 4 new colors. Think about how much hell that would be. Best to keep the same 5 colors, and just go more into depth about what those colors can do.
