I gave up on getting a full on dice like role playing feel out of GW a long time ago. Most players aren't into it that way. Hell more often than not local chat is like a My Space IM.

Some of my guildmates play up their characters a bit in name and action (a lot of bowing, saluting, kneeling, etc). But overall disbelief is NOT suspended. About the only consistant "role" playing we do is calling each other by our IGN's (mostly because they are easier to type).

The references are typically pretty obscure and geeky so I don't give them much thought.

Would I like a truly fantasy laden, ultra LOTR-like geeky MMORPG? Sure but I'll take GWs for now. It's pretty and runs well on my PC.

I'll get my serious fantasy fix reading George R. R. Martin.

Reference away Anet.

I'm still surprised they didn't make a shout called "Can You Dig It!?"

Shout. For 10 seconds all party members withing earshot take no damage from earth damage. When this shout ends all party members dance like JJ from Good Times.

Most of them are lame, but there's some hilarious ones occasionally.

I liked em. Gave me a chuckle every now and then and since I only play games for the entertainment value and not with any intention to role play it suited me just fine.

I could really care less about the references. They don't affect the game at all, unless you're a hardcore role player or something.

Dude the references are almost all funny, if only Gwen meeting her mother was like the quest dialogues (hilarious) I'd go to UW more often. I like to see real life references, because although I take a bit of time to learn about lore I don't want every single quest dialogue to be to the point. A bit of humor is good, and btw Gwen's dialogue with her mother is mediocre at best when it comes to being dramatic. I mean the first three campaigns we're like HOLY SH1T THATS GWENS MOM! We take Gwen to UW expecting something uber cool, and then they give us a dialogue that was supposed to make me feel "emotional".

It can definitely be overdone. As long as it does not become a replacement for coming up with your own material.

I think Anet went a bit too far with references, myself. It's great to have easter eggs - but easter eggs must be hidden. But these days, every quest name is a movie reference.

I'd keep it to a lower number, so that when you find a reference, it's a find.

I liked em....reminded me that many of the people who created the game are close to my genre and likely even close to my age group....some of the references would be fairly obvious to most people, ie: Enadiz elite capture is "Headbutt", others are obscure enough that your likely to only "get" it if you are old enough to have "been there" and know where the reference comes from. Though I suppose these days it is soo much easier for kids to look stuff up on Google to find out its origin.

Next time you do Turai's Story.....check out the Battle cry of the undead.
