A Laptop for christmas

Hey guys,

So, I'm probably getting a laptop for christmas, but I was wondering if Guild Wars (And maybe even Guild Wars 2 when it comes out?) would run on this laptop.

I think it's that laptop. Do you think Guild Wars would run on it efficiently, without frame lag? Internet speed is no problem.
Also, can you upgrade the Internal memory (Which is 1024) to 2048 on it?

Also if you have any other suggestions for a good laptop, they're always welcome. I do think they shouldn't cost more than €750,-- inclusive taxes if you suggest something else.

It looks fine to me! If you still have the box to guild wars it says the system requirements on it.

I have a gateway laptop, 17 inch screen, ait radion graphics, amd turion also. And its the fastest computer I've ever had.

I would say that the processor is weak and will probably choke while playing most games. Try to get a processor that is at leat T5000 or up.

If you only intend to play GW then it's fine. The processor will be weak when it comes to newer games but it should run games like half-life 2 decently too. Just don't expect to play bioshock or crysis. As for GW2 when the minimum specs are released you'll know for sure

Turion 64 X2, Acer laptop rocks meh socks. Actually I don't own one by a good friend of mine does, plays everything perfectly.

The thing is, we aren't that rich. x_X I think I found a laptop with T7250 and 2Ghz somewhere, the Asus Pro31E. Would you recommend me to buy that one, instead of the laptop I posted in the main post? My mom pays €400 of it, I have to pay the rest which is €500, so I do want to be sure I'm not buying any sucky laptop. :P

If you intend to use your laptop to play games, then i suggest that you look closely at the video card. You might want to get a processor that's a bit slower in favor of a dedicated video card instead of a faster processor and shared video memory

try this laptop, it has a much better gpu, so you will be able to easily play more games on it, + its pretty cheap

I'm mostly looking for a Laptop with around 1,83 Ghz and a processor which is at least T5000 or higher. Do you think it needs any other specifications? My current computer has 1024 MB Video Memory too, and it works really fine.
Also, what is a good Video Card?
I've got 1 with "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 - 256 MB". Is that decent, or should it be 512? x-x

Don't worry about too much the processor when you shop for a gaming laptop. If the laptop has a decent video card (like Radeon x1600 or 2600; Nividia 7600 or 8600), it will have a decent processor. You can find Core 2 Duos with integrated graphics, but you're not going to find Celerons with a good dedicated graphics card.

The Radeon 2600 256MB should be enough. You can probably run Guild Wars with everything maxed and still get good FPS. Having 512MB won't hurt, but only if it doesn't cost significantly more.

Shop around on ebay. They just released the 8800go so you might find some good bargains for a 7600 or similar

Newer technology that is in the same class (aka, mainstream, enthusiast, etc) is traditionally cheaper because of fab shrinks. So, best bet is to look for 8000 series nVidia stuff at good prices. Laptops are generally much higher in price however, which is why I avoid them.

You won't find a cheap 8800go. A basic model will go for £1k+ (so $2000 for a basic model)

You seem to know stuff about this, so I'll just follow your advice for the most part I think.
Also I live in the Netherlands, and laptops seem to be a bit more expensive here than in the USA if I compare any prices.
I guess I'll be going for this one then. I'll try to look for some laptop with 512MB and check if the price difference is decent, but the one I'm thinking of is already quite expensive for me. D:

Also, I want a laptop because my normal computer is in the living room. My mom doesn't want me to put it in my room, and I don't want to sit there all the time on my own either. :P With a laptop I can sit upstairs if I want to do a GvG or anything, because I can't talk if I'm sitting here.

Your forgetting we pay alot more here in the UK. Remember we have 17.5% VAT, tax, plus the fact we are 'the UK' - they slap a higher price tag on it anyway.. Add it all up, convert it to US dollars - who get hardware quite cheap anyway (USA).. It ends up being around $1k, if that...

Besides, he's European, hence the euro price tags he keeps posting.

That laptop has better specs than the one I played Guild Wars on for 2 years (and I still use to play it while out of town) so I speak from experience here

You should have no problems at all with GW playing at a good pace and a decent frame rate (20+ fps). Your video setup is not top end but my laptop with an ATI Mobile Radeon 9xxx w/64MB VRAM handles the GW graphics at 1440x900 just fine (one notch away from highest quality graphics in the options menu).

1GB Ram should be fine -- same that I had -- and I was running it on a single core P4 CPU which ran at 1.5GHz normally (max speed of 3GHz but throttled down for power purposes). If another process kicked in, the CPU speed would ramp up. As far as you are concerned -- the second core would kick in for that -- GW will occupy one of them (I know -- not entirely technically correct but good enough explanation for a single sentence). So, your CPU will be fine as well.

You will want to make sure you're not running much else besides Guild Wars though. Try not to autostart much beyond the defaults and everything should play just fine.

There will always be people who will tell you you need better but this system should run GW just fine (but I cannot speak for any other games).

This is the laptop I am getting to replace my busted one. I am lucky to live in Guernsey with no VAT so only costing me £560. IDK what exchange rates and taxes are like for you....or even if you could find an acer stockist but I love the spec on this machine for a good price. Even though I am sacrificing some screen size.
