Actually its now only 3 cores. Its a useful skill in dungeons and shows hidden passages,treasures and even gets you allies to help. When you use it in dungeons it will ping the map showing hidden things.
I was in the spider dungeon and used it a few times to find a secret passage,some gold from the chests and an onyx gem and also got a lvl 24 Dwarf Ghost to come long with me.

It got lowered to only 3 destroyer cores, by the way.
And i'd say yes, its definately worth it.

Thats a link to a list of the items confirmed to have been found with it so far. Just getting ONE diamond or onyx gemstone would more than cover the 3k cost of buying the cores.

It's very random it seams...
I took it into several dungeons and found 5 chests with between 100-200g in each, no items at all.
Did find a few lvl 24 dwarf ghosts, nice addition but not that big a deal.
I have had a few issues with the skill causing a ping off in the distance but not re-apearing once I get closer and use the skill again. No white marker on the gound to indicate anything either.

I haven't been able to get this quest to finish for me. I have 6 destroyer cores in my inventory and the quest notes say See Alkar for your reward...but nothing. Do I have to abandon the quest and retake it?
Bah never mind...why the hell do I have to take the time to go back to the battledepths just to do this when he's right there in the Central Transfer Chamber?

I agree its worth it....i have received 5 onyx so far...various gold amounts and some random junk.. Also if you are playing with others...only one person needs to bring it. I usually clear the area then use it instead of using it while mobs are still present. Also chests tend to appear in the same "area" everytime.

He has two damn copies, and since battledepths is not "on the map" you wont see the arrow pointing anywhere....it is kind a stupid.
