I just thought of a nice goal. I want to get 250 of each crafting material... WITHOUT buying any of them. I'm planning on doing it mainly either on my warrior or my dervish. If I become desperate, I may make a monk or something like that. All I need for this is builds... And where to farm... Any suggestions, post here, pm me on guru or in game. Warmaster Jacxx is the name.
EDIT: YES, I will try to get EVERY crafting material, including rares. How I'll get gems, jadite, and amber is beyond me. Whatever. I'll do it.

Is this including rares? A lot of rares you can craft, just need the basics and the money.
Normal ones are easy, got over 250 of all of them, but rares less so
Fur, best bet is probably the wardens in echovald forest. Silk maybe jade brotherhood, tho can be variable, got some from corsairs just now
Others rely on very much luck. Rubies and sapphires, probably best to just buy if you want them, as low odds of dropping, tho can salvage from respective djinn essences

If you want an old family secret. (not sure if this still works) Outside of Augury Rock, there is a Collector ,[wiki]Fenster the Golden[/wiki], that takes minotaur horns for collector armor. If I remember correctly, these things salvage crafting materials like no tomorrow. If this still works, you can get like 6-10 linen per expert salvage. I also depends on what armor type you get. But if you notice, he take minotaur horns. Obviously there is a mission nearby that TONS of 55 monks farm, and they usually sell the horns to merchant. If they are human, they will usually sell a stack of horns for under 2-3k, and there you go, just bring some friends of every profession and see what you get. Someone please test this! /Hush!
i have no idea how you're gonna get 250 charcoal...

Some of the rare materials can only be obtained from artisans or the rare trader.
I don't think there is any other way to obtain deldrimor steel, for example. I believe glass vials, bottles of ink, and damask can only be crafted or purchased as well. Maybe this will change in Eye of the North.
Good luck getting 250 of everything, but if you really want to do it, I think you will have to buy some of them.

Farming Slaves Spirits in Nightfall with 55 Mo/Me in hardmode can get you quite a bit of materials. Before for HM I used a Shockwave Ele to farm slave spirits, and I usually stayed out there until I used up 2 full Superior Salvage kits and atleast 1 full Sup. Ident Kit. I came back with atleast a full stack of tanned hide, Bones, Iron, wood, cloth, dust and atleast 20 steel. I had a character full of stacks of materials, and made quite of bit of money selling them for cheap. Eventually i got tired of seling them and just merch'd them. But I have a stack of almost all the usual armor crafting materials, with 3 and half stacks of steel which is 50k for each stack. And got most of them from farming slave spirits this past winter. Even though farming areas don't drop as much stuff as before HM, still get alot of materials farmin Slave Spirits, along with dead swords, and other gold items.
good luck on the clay brick and other 2 materials that are no longer available (can't remember the names)... some people have some, but I doubt you'll get 250 of each... hats of to you if you even get one :P
Steel Ingots: farm anything and salvage everything
Jade: Jade Brotherhood / Alliance Battles (if that counts)
Amber: Anything in the forest / Alliance Battles (if that counts)
Ink/Glass Vials: Salvaging the stole shipments that Corsairs and Yeti drop

O-O believe it or not i have the same goal
but i allow myself to buy some materials if and only if i have 1 mill in storage and 100k on all my chars
the easiest as some1 allready said is converting common materials into rare ones from those artisans its a real money saver
this is wiki place u can look at the list of what they offer
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Artisan
some of those materials though cost more when u trade with the artisans than they do when u just buy from rare material trader so make sure too look at the current prices before going through with it
i'll post a scrennie on how much i have done so far when i get home =P
(guru = great time waster at school =D )
this is what i got so far
still got a long while 2 go
