how about starting to play?

Without knowing anything about you (chapters, skills availible, etc) the best I can give you is a good template.

1.) Attack Skill (Dual Shot, Marauder's Shot, Screaming Shot, Burning Arrow)
2.) Spamable Attack skill (Cross Fire, Penetrating Shot)
3.) Interrupt (Savage, Distracting)
4.) Prep (Read the Wind, Apply Poison)
5.) Self-Heal/conditon removal (Troll Ungent, Mending Touch)
6.) Evasion Stance (Natural Stride, Whirling Defense)
7.) Ressurection Skill (Rez Signet, Rebirth, SS Rebirth Signet)
8.) Utility Skill (2nd Interrupt, Condition causing skill, Mending touch, etc)

If you went with /Warrior you could use Flail which is a good way to beef up your damage output. Anyhow, that should get you started. Feel free to research a bit, experiment and post any questions you have about specifics.

If you are looking for full builds to start from, here are 2 nightfall-only builds with good damage output and elites that can be captured early on:

barbarous slice|gash|throw dirt|disrupting lunge|rampage as one{e}|comfort animal|charm animal|res sig, 12 BM, 12 Sword, 9 Exp, zealous sword+any shield

pin down|burning arrow{e}|savage shot|distracting shot|apply poison|troll ungent|natural stride|rebirth, 14 Marksmanship, 10 WS, 12 Exp, recurve bow

Glass Arrows, Dual Shot, Forked Arrow, perhaps Brutal Weapon added on.

That's all you need. Add Marauder's Shot for damage as well, if you want, and just chain those attack skills. Needling Shot is useful there.

To be honest though, rangers aren't usually meant for "big damage".
