Would this perhaps be an indication of how much the community feels toward this event which Anet has spend some considerable amount of time and effort to plan and implement when they perhaps could be doing something else....?

What would the account name be, since the email is asked for after it? One of the characters/first character created on the account?

It's just what you type in to log into the game, asking for the email separately allows you (as it recommends) to use a different email account for the competition correspondence.

I found that unclear, too.

So if they mean enter your account name, as in the email address that you log in with, then the warning above the registration about not using your GW email or password is more confusing.

And a friend was kind enough to point out that the registration site isn't "secure" (no https, no little comforting icon lock thingy.) Which makes the page's recommendations for securing your GW account and password more confusing still.

Maybe it's just very late and I'm not lucid enough to see something obvious here, but it struck me as not worth trying to register. At least, not yet.

Oh, and I do care. Green candycane weapons would be a nice new addition in my special event mule characters' inventories! (Just remember to get them back from Koss before the Consulate Docks mission. )

I registered but my confirmation email hasn't arrived. I wonder whether it's different to the usual 'sign-up and bam, email in your inbox' deal.

Me too.. confirmation emails aren't working!

In game, the log-in screen says "Account Name" so I am quite sure it must be what you got there, but this makes it really pointless for them asking to use a different e-mail. Another password can't hurt of course.

And I also didn't get a confirmation yet.

Well if you are in Europe you could have your parents apply for you, if you're a minor. So it makes sense to have the account separated from the email.

However, the automated system not working is a turndown

hardly; I recall Gaile saying on TGH the weapons are the green verions of last year's candy weapons, and they weren't max.

i could hope they are inscriptable at least, but I had the same hope for the Halloween caps (given that they would not be in any way and advantage) and they weren't.

Well it says you're not supposed to be able to actually make your predictions til tomorrow so maybe they wont send the confirmation 'til then..

I really don't like how the points are gained and how players are rewarded in this contest.
Look:
Only precisely matching a guild's rank after playoffs will score a point.
If you order them all at random you have a good chance of hitting one or two, so basically most of participants will end with one green item.
The chances of guessing 11 guilds' exact rank is so extremelly low that there may even not be a single person who will make that.
The amount of all possible combinations of final results for 32 guilds is a 36-digit number!
I estimated the chance of hitting 11 or more correct guesses at 1 to over 200 ,000,000 ! (my formulas may be off, need someone to give more precise results)

My suggestion on how it should be:
-Players pick only 8 guilds they think will make TOP8
-for making 2-4 correct picks 1 green item
-for making 5-6 correct picks 2 green items
-for making 7-8 correct picks 3 green items
THIS would be much more skill-based and would reward those that make good guesses. Much more fair, without having to choose whether a guild will be 3rd or 4th when in Swiss system playoffs the exact place will depend on Tie-Breakers, because there will be multiple guilds that will win for example 4 matches (get 12 points).

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to make up a new one. You don't want to be giving your gw info to anyone, even if it is gw. Since you have to type in the password twice, it sounds like you are supposed to make up an entirely new one.
