Escape From Torment- Confused (slight spoiler)

I led the NPC to the escape point where he explained how he used me. My log updated but I only had time to read the part about the fact that I needed to defeat the new Abaddon forces surounding me. I defeated them but then got a quest failed message. What was the other part that I apparently missed?

I'm pretty sure buddy has to survive (they enemies sometimes kill him). This happend to me the first time, but on my second try I got quest complet.
