Funny thing is i imagined the exact same thing the OP did.
I mean the only situation where our own characters have actually been together was in the original Prophecies Screen, where all the characters are in a camp Fire, and you can see them all at once. Ah good days.
Also look at it like this:
"Dude#1-Hey dude what Heroes are you taking?"
"Dude#2- Huuum, Koss..."
"Dude#1-Wtf Koss? Koss is big n00b!"
-Naturally theres a big ingenuaty on this generalization, but the point is*
*turning characters into heroes would customize the battlefield much more, instead of seeing Koss passing by...then his Clone passing by after him.

use your existing chars as heroes?

I think this is a GREAT idea in the core, but i think we need to fix some details to make sure its not imbalanced or exploiting the game.
FIRST:
Hero Hench dont have storage.
Therefore Character Hero Hench based on our other characters should NOT have storage either.
They should be BLANK with no weapon access (unless you pull it out of storage) to protect from duping.
SECOND:
Hero hench armor is based on their level.
So their armor lvl of the Character Hero Hench would not be equal to what the real playable character has, but rather the character's level, just like the regular Hero hench.
--------------------------
HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE. (In my opinion)
(i will use my characters for examples)
1) Unlock the option of Character Heroes.
Unlocking should be a END GAME option. As in after you beat the last boss.
2) Choices of Character Heroes.
Character Heroes have to MATCH the Hero character's profession that they replace.
In other words, if you want to use your warrior has a Character Hero, it would have to replace (temporarily) Koss. If i wanted my monk as a Character Hero, she would replace a monk Hero.
Also, you cant dupe a character. If im using my warrior Yachiru, i cant have a Character Hero of my warrior also.
3) Armor and Equipment and Skills.
When you make your Character Hero, you choose what armor they will wear based on what is in the inventory of that character at the time of creation.
So Duckie wants to have Yachiru as her warrior hench. She rolls a Character Hero, and since Yachiru has 4 sets of armor in her inventory at all times, she can pick and choose which ones to use for the Character Hero that represents Yachi.
Character Hero Yachiru will be equipped with the armor you chose (runes attached to the armors are included, just to be fair).
Now for weapons. Character Hero Yachiru will be equipped with the weapon set Koss was using before you replaced him (so you dont delete those items by accident). If i want to use the same weapon the REAL Yachi is using, id have to put it into storage and apply it to the Character Hero.
And finally Skills. My Character Hero of Yachiru will have the same skills available as Koss. Simple.
4) Cool stuff:
Choose your own taunts/shouts for your character heroes ^_^
--------------------------
I think at the core of it, this idea would basically be allowing us to have heroes whos SKIN changes to that of our existing character.

I think that the main idea is good, having just how your character was before being your hero. Having it have the same exact stuff as the hero would have is pointless lol. It would be a waste of time for anet to switch heros with characters unless they were your actual characters, not just a hero that has the face of your character.

The reason i think it should be like this is just following the basic mantra the flows through guild wars.
Skins change, functionality doesnt.
All max level axes are the same functionality regardless of the skin. Theres no uber rare axe that causes more damage.
If the Hero hench actually WAS our character, it would be very imbalanced, imo.
------------
The idea is good, but if you wanna be realistic about implementing it into the game, it has to be BALANCED and non-exploitable.
having access to more storage and gold via character hero henches is a serious explot imo.
Leveling more than 1 character at a time is a serious exploit.
Thats why my idea is merely changing skins (with your choice of existing armor). Its feasable and does not imbalance the game. So far in this thread, im the only one addressing the issue realistically.

You Hero's would only be able to change their armour Runes, and equipped weapons/offhands from your Character's inventory.

1-1 does not equal 2.
And Since you can't Have the Character you are playing also be a hero, no duping.

This is an outstanding idea, with a little work. Obviously, it would need to be set to not allow you to level multiple characters at once. In general, it would need to limit everything you could do with your character/hero to being like a henchman.... no inventory, doesn't allow you to collect items, etc. Basically, just make it so that the hench you bring along would look like your character and have the same name, and also have the skills you select for it (like the upcoming Heroes in Nightfall).

Oh, and to the people concerned about leveling, how about either
A) Your characters don't get any levels (or drops) when they are considered heros.
Or
B) You can only use your characters as heros with other characters that are already lvl 20, and then you can only use lvl 20 characters. For example
Assume I have 3 different characters so far. They are Bob, Jim, and John. Bob is lvl 20 and so is Jim, but john is lvl 19.
If I try to play on John, I can't use my other characters as heros.
If I try to play on Bob or Jim, they can use my other characters as heros. The only thing is, I can't make John one of my heros because he is not level 20.
Or
C) Exactly the same as B, exept in order to use your other characters as heros, you need to beat the game. For example
Bob has beat the game. Jim and John haven't. This means I can only get the special heros when I play as Bob, but since I haven't completed the game with Jim or John, I can't use them as my heros.
That way they will have to be lvl 20, because I doubt they will be able to beat the game if they aren't lvl 20.
Personally, I like A better. It's easier and simpler, but as long as I can use my characters as heros eventually, I'm happy.
