Chat Bar "exiting" while typing...

I haven't seen this problem posted elsewhere on this board, and my attempts using the "search" didn't yield any thread titles that seemed relevant. If this has already been posted, I appologize.


I have been experiencing a problem where, when typing in the chat bar, the game will "exit" the chat bar seemingly randomly. Since I'm still typing, this usually ends up with me pulling up various menus (Guild Menu "g", Friend list "n", map "m", etc), starting to use skills (#1-8), moving or running ("r"), and other effects. This happens now quite frequently and it has occasionally had deleterious consequences. For example, I was in the Deep with some friends and was typing a message. Suddenly, I noticed that my character started running and then the map came up. I ended up spawning 2 groups of Oni before I regained control.

I'm not really sure how to better describe this problem. When you hit "enter" to access the chat bar, the chat interface opens and you get a cursor in the chat bar. Usually, the chat bar interface remains open until you finish typing and hit enter, or you manually cancel it. Even if you click elsewhere in the interface (to activate a skill, or move) the chat bar remains active and anything you type goes there. In this case, the cursor disappears at seemingly random times, and you switch back to the keyboard command interface instead of the chat bar interface.

I finally mentioned this annnoyance to my guildmates and had several others respond that they'd been experiencing it too. Can anyone else verify this, or know what might be causing it to occur? I first began experiencing this problem after the recent interface update (July 27th update).

Has this been happening to you when your friends window is open? Cause I notice this happens to me when mine is open, and a friend logs off or on. Donno if this is what is causing it, but I hope it is something simple like that, cause as you mentioned it can cause alot of problems otherwise.

Strangely enough, just before reading your post, I was engaging in finalizing an auction transaction. I always put my buyers in my Friends list to know when they're online and so the friends list was indeed open. And yes, the problem occured frequently during the exchange. I incidentally noted one of my friends switching characters once when it happened so I was going to experiment a bit when more friends were online to see if the events were related.

Ok... I did a little testing. I had my friends menu open, and PM'd one of my online friends to set herself from "online" to "offline" and back several times at about 10 second intervals. I then started typing random nonsense into the chatbar.

Quite clearly, whenever my friend switched from online to offline and vice versa, the chat interface ended. I also left the chat interface open and then removed someone from my friend list, and the chat interface ended as well (ie, i lost the cursor, although the text was still there).

so, yeah... this clearly seems to be related to the Friends menu. I'm not sure why this occurs, and I suppose the easy fix is to not have your friend list open. However, this is frustrating when trying to form a team for PvP, or Missions runs.

Well, its nice to see someone else is having this same issue. Its driving me INSANE. I have the same problem, and have had such isues that I too have lost some pvp matches and died a few tims in pve as a result of this issue. Hope anet fixes it soon ><

Yes, it's definately related to the Friend's list. I've been having this issue since the interface update to (and lots of others). Sent Anet a bug report this morning. I'd suggest everyone else do the same. Maybe they'll fix it if they ever get their servers working

After I made a clear connection to the friends list, I sent in a bug report to ANet as well, with the link to this thread included. Hopefully we'll get a fix.

Happened to me for 2-3 days whenever a friend signed on or off, even with my friend list closed. I haven't noticed it the last day or so, though.

this has happened to me in Guild Chat and Observer Mode / Team Chat. It's so sporradic that I often forget about it, but yes it does occur. I'm mid sentence, did NOT press Enter or click the mouse to focus outside the box, but suddenly windows pop up on the screen (like if I was typing "gone", I'd see my Guild Roster, Morale Chart, and Friends List suddenly), or my character starts moving for no reason. It's very random, and it seems that the game somehow focuses away from the chat box.

It's not as frequent as the pain in the ASS message suppression in Guild Chat, but just as annoying when it happens. Hopefully both bugs are related and will be quashed at thesame time.

Oh yeah, you've gotta love it when you're typing in Alliance chat, type two lines, try to type a third 30 seconds later and get told that your message was suppressed due to excessive messaging. Yeah, that's annoying alright. *grumble*

Try writing your friends down and clearing your friends list. I'm not sure about the rest of you but whenever it does it to me, someone on my friends list has just signed in or out.

I'm not getting any problems but then again rarely do I type with my friends list open.

I have noticed the suppression of chat in Guild, Observer, and Alliance chat though. I haven't tested party or whisper since the supposed "fix."

Anet should be able to do something soon.

It used to happen to me WITHOUT the friends list open. It stopped for a day or so, then did it again today (about 40 minutes ago), only my friends list was open this time.

Update - Thursday August 18

* Updated translations.
* Added a Priest of Balthazar and a Scribe to the Jade Quarry and Fort Aspenwood outposts.
* Fixed the chat edit losing focus when a friend's status updates while the friends list is open.
