I suspect for the same reason people buy FoW armor or 15k armor. For the status. A guild hall stocked full of NPC's is not something every guild can afford. Yet it can provide a sense of pride in their guild for the members of guilds that do.

No. Some things in the game, such as rare skins, FoW armor, perhaps 15k armor, etc. are meant to serve as status items that separate the casual players for the more hardcore, while not providing any competitive advantage. This is part of why people are upset with Ebayers. They get these things without putting in the effort.
Casual gamers can easily get the best armor and weapons (not necessarily the skins, but functionality) to be on an even playing field with someone with the rarest skins and FoW armor.

Um... Spend more time farming, playing, etc... whatever the more hardcore players do. That is the crowd that these NPC's are targeted at. You don't need them, though, so if you are a casual player, just accept it as something you won't get. This is how I used to look at 15k armor. Now, after having played a while, I have enough to outfit my chars with 15k. Why ? Because I want to.
