Locked gate... in Amnoon Oasis??

What is with this? I just noticed it a few days ago, when trying to get a few more points in my Explorer title. I figured it was an arena, but there's no way in that I can tell. Isn't there supposed to be an NPC standing there to let you into the arena?

Also, I apologize if this has been posted before. I searched, too vague of terms to search for, and couldn't sift through all the posts. So yeah, what's goin on here?

It was originally supposed to be a gateway to an arena back when people fought in an Ascalon, Yak's Bend, Costal, and Forge Team Arenas; well before Anet merged the high lvl arenas of them into the Battle Isles. However, the Desert Arena was gone well before Prophecies was fully released.

take your gwen items to the ghostly hero, he will run over to the gate, and open it. you get ported to a place called House of 1,000 Smite Crawlers. This is like a a mission, but only 2-person parties are allowed. Once you press enter mission, you get ported to the house, and you are given 30 seconds to get your enchants up. Once all enchants are up, Smite Crawlers start swarming you like crazy. The best way to kill them all is to constantly have SV/AV on you, and use a Spirit Bond tank build. Gather up all 1,000 around you, then let the SS necro do his work. They will die. You and your partner will be as rich as Akhilleus, if not richer after you do this 2 or 3 times. Good Luck.

For a second I wondered if maybe they would use it when Ch3 came out similar to how they use that one gate in LA when you bring a Canthan character to Tyria. The reason I suspected this is because Elona's Reach is in the desert and there has been some talk about Elonian stuff with Ch 3. It probably won't happen however since LA is known as the gateway to Prophecies and having two might make travelling a hassle.
