The stalkers are also rather thick in number.
Particularly for such a "rare" pet.

The only reason that Melandru's are such a majority is because, any time that you start learning more Ranger skills in Pre-Searing Ascalon, you have to do the quest to tame the Melandru in order to get the Charm Animal skill. So unless everybody just starts the quest but decides not to finish it so that they can get a different pet (and sidestep the experience gained from finishing the quest), or they just tame them and have to "pawn" them off to the Animal Tamer. Most people seem perfectly content to just stick with the Melandru and not really worry about getting a new pet. Unless you're like me, and want to get more exotic and "cooly" named pets (i.e. Warthog, Playful Lynx).

That'd be the point of my post.
Perhaps if the trainer were to tell them "Y'know, you don't HAVE to keep that oversized cat."?

It seemed like you were stating something rather obvious about them being thick in numbers, and the lack of any further substantial explanation made it seem like you were saying there shouldn't be that many Melandru's out there.

Well, you know what they say about what happens when you assume something.
Back to topic, the idea of taking on a bear with two rangers trying to charm the same animal is an interesting one. Granted, you'd have to find some hapless sap willing to take a death for the sake of you getting a pet.

Not sure why this thought popped into my head, but doesn't it seem that Striders/Moa Birds are kind of a play off of the Chocobos off the Final Fantasy series. Granted that Chocobos are yellow, the similarites are somewhat striking...

In a half-joking way.. the lack of further explanation could also just mean the obvious, unembellished statement.. which it usually does.
As for the bear, I recall several threads with some quite valiant, courageous, determined folks trying to tame that bear. Unfortunately, their attempts were for naught. I think maybe I'll try next time.. and use Caps for bait! C'mere Scapers..

But...I'll probably be dry and stringy and get caught in its teeth.
...why not try Moomoo instead?

If you are referring to everything after the Academy, there are a few different animals to charm, including the Lynx, which I personally have a preference for.
If you mean the immediate area around Ascalon City the Moa Bird is the only one I know of in that area.

Yes, as long as you can survive the damage it does to you while you are casting the charm spell. That's how I got my Lynx back in December or January.
