it is a starting guild and they went up against a better (more experienced) guild and *got pwned*.
what is your solution?
should they do it over with increasing penalties (1 player short, 3 players short etc) until your friend wins?
do you want equal results no matter the skill?
should everybodys first battle always be a big win?

Think about other team sports out there (hockey, football, etc) You will have good teams fighting bad teams regularly. It happens, deal with it. The simplest solution is to watch how long it's taking to find an opponent, any more than 20 seconds, restart the search as it's moving further and further outside it's starting search.

I see what he means. Yes, while it is true that this is the case in competive sports, sometimes it seems like Peewee league being matched against last year's superbowl champs. You can sure learn something from them, but more often then not, it is just disheartening and you just want to stop playing pvp (gvg) all together.
My guild is primarily PvE but we have had some interest in doing GvG battles so we tried a few. We were drastically outranked and as such no one wanted to do it for weeks. When we finally did attempt again, we got lucky and went against a relatively similar rank guild, but they had one level 20 War, 1 lvl 3 ele and a lvl 6 monk vs. our level 20s. We destroyed them. I can only imagine how they felt. But riding on that high, I knew I didn't want to ruin the joy at actually winning a GvG battle by going into another one just yet. So we only did that one.
Now I am not dead set against doing GvG. That little bit of confidence helped me to continue interest in that aspect of the game.
While it is true that the age of the guild doesn't determine the experience of the players in the guild, I think there should be some better attempt to match guilds of more or less equal rank.
As your rank builds, you move up in tiers.

Then tell your friend to go post in the "unrated gvg" thread and ask for unrated gvg. What did you expect from gvging after a ladder reset? Or you can just tell him to wait in about a month, then his guild might find an equal guild in skills/rank.

It's much like he said. The guild matchups are based upon the rating number right? Since the ladder just reset, the difference in rating between a guild just starting and #1 is minimal. As time goes the ratings will spread out more and the low rating will fight more low ranked guilds as will the high end guilds.
This isn't to say the matching system is flawed though. Even before the reset, my guild went up against several guilds in the 3,000 rankings to even unranked. There isn't much you can do. Anet is trying to find a perfect balance where guilds can fight similar rated guilds, but at the same time not wait forever to get matched.

The longer you wait in the "awaiting opponent screen" the wider the rank search goes, If your low ranked, its best to restart the counter after 30 secs.

dargon dont even attempt at comparing guild wars to actual sports.
The schedules are premade and it is impossible to tell for certain how good a hockey team is gonna be before they play a game. Guild wars is more of a fairness and equality game. GVG is MEANT to put you up aagaisnt a team with a similar rank as you (yes there are some smurf guilds that are better than their rank says, but its still basically the way the game is meant to be run). A team rank 20 should not be playing a team rank 800+

i remember being in a guild with a good rank and rating but they sucked, they had PURE luck, nothing more, both teams didnt know how to play ( i didnt know either because i was new and stupid trying to GvG lol ) and we kept getting teams that didnt know how to GvG even when our rank and rating increased.
Isn't like that anymore, people have grown smarter
