Success!
Just wanted to report, I managed to pull a sup. absorption rune yesterday - it was dropped by one of the first ettins you encounter in the N. Kryta province (the 3rd one, actually, there are two groups of two ettins at the beginning). So, anyone claiming it's been nerfed, sorry, you just had bad luck..

Ive ran it prolly close to 8 times in the past couple weeks, and Ive gotten about 5 superior runes, 10-12 majors, and like 5 minors. I don't think its nerfed but, it may be...
BTW....Do they tend to give better drops if you skip the first zone of ettins after you leave bettletun and go straight to the North Kryta province, or is it just that some people have better luck this way?

Well, I went again yesterday... and some things felt different. First of all, in Nebo terrace, after you run past the first groups of Mergoyles and before you get to the Caromi scout and Caromi Wild, there was a Necro Boss (some sort of living tree can't remember the name), and I never saw it there before. I managed to get a few major runes, nothing of value, and the other items they dropped (the ettins) were different - at least the ratios were. Before, they occasionaly dropped runes and a lot of harened humps with a few 'ordinary' items (weapons, white blue and purple). Now it was mostly weapons, with a few hardened humps and very few runes.. the whole run felt altered, both in Nebo Terrace and N. Kryta. Could be wrong.. I hope I am.

Well, that Oakheart boss has been there for ages. It's a random spawn, but I've sliced and diced him plenty of times.
The drops for the Ettins have definitely been altered. I decided to make some runs today after a few months of hiatus and I was severely dissapointed with my rewards... I'm used to getting Superiors and Uncommons like crazy out there, and I only got two uncommons the whole time today.
Guess we all find another spot to rune farm...

Actually, I've been able to deny my suspicions; the drops were slightly altered - the ones that do not turn out to be runes. I did a few runs over the weekend (for me, one run is, take off from beetletun, cross the nebo terrace, farm ettins in N. Kryta, go to Scoundrel's Rise, immediately back, farm again on the way back to Nebo terrace). I was able to get 1-2 superior runes - per run. BTW, as faer said, that necro boss I mentioned (Tree of Solitude) is always on map, it's just that it's usually in a different position, sometimes in spawns on your way. Don't know about you guys, but I found this farming run very profitable during last weekend and am definitely going to keep it up for a while.

Whats happening here

I go farming ettins from time to time, tried it again before few days, & on 1 full run I ended up with net worth 15k of loot. My run usually goes like this: start from beetletun, kill giants in Nebo, proceed to N.Kryta, kill ettins there, go to scoundeler's rise (or something like that, 4am here Oo?, go back in N. Kryta, kill etins again, go to nebo, go back & do that as long I have inventory space. I got several gold runes, I think 2 were sup monk runes, 1-2 major vigor & few other not so expensive things. What I found strange is a gold sword with perfect mods on it. Sword wasn't max dmg tough, & when I tried to salvage it, I got... iron >.<
I run this build for farming:
Frenzy
Eviscerate {E}
Executioners
Penetrating
Sprint
Dolyak Signet
Watch Yourself
Healing Signet
From equipment I use crimson carpace shield (stance), full glad armor, major vigor, sup absorb (it's cheap these days so...), & a 14^50 fiery axe of fortitude. I don't use superior runes, it would probably speed up the stuff to have sup axe mastery, but I'm lazy to get a new helmet.
Atributes:
Strength: 11
Axe Mastery: 13
Tactics: 10

tactics: 10
axe mastery: 10
1 thing use healing signet when you have dolyak on.

I never farmed much but tried this a few times with an axe build in the last couple of days - and I have to say the rune drop is kinda crazy.
I've gotten two sup. vigor and one sup. absorbtion
A LOT of major runes, but none of them are worth salvaging still it's weird they drop that much - for me the drop ratio has been something like 85% major - 10% superior - 5% minor.
From testing a lot of stuff, I've come to feel this is the best build for the run (haven't bothered reading the whole thread so I'm sure someone else has a similar build)
Triple chop {E}
Cyclone Axe
Executioner's Strike
Furious Axe
Bonettis Defense
Vigorous Spirit
Balthazar's Spirit
Mending
Healing 8
Smiting 8
Strength 10 (9+1)
Axe Mastery 15 (12+3)
Tactics 2 (1+1)
Using:
Sundering Axe of Axe Mastery (15>50 while enchanted).
Shield -2 while enchanted, Health +45
If you want to do it while watching TV, just replace Balthazar's Spirit with Live Viscariously and move the smiting points to healing, it's too easy but also a little slower than the other way.
Also I found that using a high damage attack actually works faster for killing the Ettins than using an interrupt since they take extra damage while using the Healing Signet - on occasion I do 130-150 damage on them.
Except for the occational drop of the high value runes I don't think this is worth it though, the value of the drops aren't worth much and money drops are low as well - you'd get a lot more money from just killing stuff outside Maatu Keep and it's pretty much just as easy (except for the Wallows, stay clear of those).

might as well contribute to the mass number of builds already posted
attribs:
swordsmanship 12+1+3
strength 9+1
smiting 3
healing 9
skills:
Hundred Blades [E]
Sever Artery
Gash
Sun and Moon Slash
Sprint
Healing breeze
Vigorous Spirit
Balth's Spirit
Equipment:
max damage sword with any element mod (ettins take extra damage from elements, and without that extra damage, the kill time of this build would be reduced)
45/2 enchant shield
Glads Armor (my armor of choice, but im sure others would work too)
How to Use:
As you leave Beetletun, cast balths and vigorous. sprint before you hit the mergoyles, just to save some time, and hopefully by the time you meet the first 2 avicara, it will be recharged. cast breeze then vigorous, then make contact with the avicara. breeze negates phantasm (7 regen to 5 degen). cast vigorous again then sprint past the second 2 avicara.
you will now be at the ettins. if you take on 5 or less, breeze is not necessary. just make sure balths is on during every encounter, as well as vigorous spirit.
to kill the ettins, and maintain health, in the best way possible, try to bunch up the ettins shoulder to shoulder, making hundred blades more effective (hits target and foes adjacent to target, not foes adjacent to you, unlike triple chop/cyclone axe.
just cycle the attack skills, keeping ettins shoulder to shoulder as much as possible. when fighting more than 5, you will be taking a lot of hits, enought to keep up breeze easily (as well as vigorous of course). after defeating the nebo terrace ones, head into NKP and get the ones there too. map back to town and start from fresh
why i posted this:
i've tryed a lot of the builds in this topic and none are as effective at easily staying alive, killing ettins very quickly, always maintaining lots of energy, and getting from beetletun, to nebo terrace, to NKP. Some of the builds people are posting are far too complicated, using skills like dolyak and watch yourself, which arn't necessary, because warriors take little damage from ettins anyway, and vigorous + hundred blades can keep your hp at maximum without issue.
hope some of you try it and realise how basic, yet easy it is to use.

you do realize that the post that you quoted is 9 months old right? I'm sure he has found an answer by now.

The ettins wern't really nerfed, but rune prices are just so low right now that it isn't worth while. There are many better places with better returns that also provide more xp.
