Liquid got it pretty much, but I use Y'z Dock instead of Object Dock.

Download tweakui for xp. DL link is along the right side. After installing tweakui go to the desktop tab on the left side. you will be given a choice for first icon. Make sure recycle bin is unchecked and it is gone

Mine used to be plain, but i started looking at this thread, and so i became inspired to do this. It took me like 3 hours, figuring out XP skin hack, widgets, and gettin rid of recycle bin, but i think it turned out rather nicely, i think

took the photo myself while I was in norway recently added it to a black backdrop & started using it as a background ...recent clean up of all the files on my desktop too
