@Wickie: I really like your first one. Nice setup and presentation. The second one looks strange as your character looks like a "paste-up" on a blurred backdrop.
@xxSilhouette: For a first attempt I'd say it's really good. Always keep in mind that a good image needs a good setup first. Never be afraid to take multiple screenshots; check differents areas, hike to places you haven't gone yet and play with the camera.
@Sable Phoenix: I really like what you did. Looks like paint on a canvas. Can you enlighten us with the steps, please?
xxSilhouette: Yep, second one looks even better. The only thing I see are some areas around the body which need a more precise erasing; shoulders and arms. Zoom in on your image as much as needed for the erasing.
bryann380: I'm not familiar with PSP but I'd say you did a pretty decent job here. Only one thing; the colors of the backdrop are vivid but your character's skin looks, well, pale. Unless that's her original skin color. Because as I see it, the backdrop catches the eye first because of the colors, then to the character.

Well, as Bethany requested I'll provide some explanation of how I got from this:
To this:
My first steps were similar to Bethany's tutorial. I made three layer copies of the entire screenshot; in this way I can erase various parts of the image to get different blurs. The bottom was Gaussioan blurred to 3, and everything was erased save the sky and horizon; the middle was blurred to 2 and included the giant crystal; the top was blurred to 1 and had only the characters and foreground erased. Then I flattened, applied a subtle lighting effect, and dodged and burned various areas to bring out highlights.
The color changes are very involved and include a lot of Image>Adjustments>Color Balance, Image>Adjustments>Brightness&Contrast, Image>Adjustments>Levels, Image>Adjustments>Hue&Saturation (ctrl+U), and Image>Adjustments>Variations, as well as some hand-painting. That's beyond what most people probably want to do here, although I can make a detailed tutorial if people want it.
Once the image was blurred, lit, and highlighted to my satisfaction, I made a new layer copy and applied a Filter>Brush Strokes>Angled Strokes to it. I adjusted it to my satisfaction, then set the layer opacity to approximately 30%. This gave me a subtle painterly effect without destroying too much detail. Then I made another layer copy of the first un-stroked layer, used Hue&Saturation with the Colorize box checked to give the entire layer a warm sepia tone, then applied Filter>Texture>Texturizer and used the Canvas texture with a very high relief setting. I then altered the layer opacity of this one as well, to approximately 25%. Finally, I wanted the sky brighter and more orange, so I used Select>Color Range to select the sky colors and altered the Brightness&Contrast and Hue&Saturation, then threw a little Dodging on it to blow it out some. And viola! Save as JPEG and the result is what you see.

@ sable Phoenix: Thanks a million for the elaborate description of your image treatment.
@ cunning: I really like what you did. Can you share your image treatment?
@ Haunted Deception: Please, as stated by Unlucky Slayer and myself, keep your images no more than 800 pixels wide. Your image, even if interesting, is 1280 pixels wide. 800 pixels is more than usually allowed but the thread received a special permission so I would like again to remind everyone to keep everything at 800 or less.

The explosion was from a worm in FoW, I intensified the cloud of dust using the dodge tool, then I adjusted the Curves quite heavily. I also added noise.
In the second shot I just blurred, sharpened and intensified everything where required. I also adjusted levels, used the Cutout filter, used Smart Blur and adjusted layer styles.
Might as well add another one:

So I'm bored this afternoon and decided hey, why not join the fun?
Leads to:
Not really satisfied with it, but my tablet is broken and fine detail is beyond my mousing abilities.
