As far as the OP goes, I once read in a design magazine, that many artists see photoshop, not as a program, but as an opperating system. It is a program with a massive depth, and yet, adobe do a good job of making it as user friendly as possible. If you are lucky enough to be able to play around with it, I say go for it! I started using my first graphics package at the age of around 8 (admitedly it was on a commodore 64... and consisted of a mouse, a paintbrush tool, a fill bucket tool, and about 16 colours ).
Also, CS3 Beta is available for public download!
