lol

And I agree my friend, I too am ultra quick on my combination, but the idea of re-configuring is to reduce the amount of buttons you have to press.

Not just for the purposes of easyer game play, but for health risks associated with Repetative Strain Injury (RSI) which the gamer is most at risk to.

excelent suggestion actually.. I actually EXPAND my party box.. so that it is MUCH wider, and sits above the skill box... reason for this is that I can more accuratly measure the health status of my party memebers.

Very usfull for making snap decisions about who exactly to rescue/defend.. but it does get in the way sometimes.. would be nice to have it semi-transparent at least.

Which I find annoying actually!.. I dont know about anyone else but I find it hard to read when transparent...

I also get very angry friends asking me why I never respond to their msg's.. this is because I dont see it!!... in City of Heroes, whenever you get a message directly to you (ie: important.. you need to respond!) it plays a jingle.. a ssshwing noise, its very discreet.. not in your face at all, but you make a mental note of it and respond when conveinient.

Not having this noise is almost like having a front door with no Bell on it or no knocker... how on earth are people supposed to get your attention if you in the back room?..shout?.. no... the only way is to spam! which is rude and I hate it.... actually, im going to post this as an idea

The Snowman

p.s.
sorry if I seem to be dominating this thread.. configuration is my favorite subject on any game

I too am somewhat of a UI mod junkie. Ever since they released the highly customizable interface in EQ1, I knew that I never had to accept the default.

I'm a little disappointed with the lack of customization of the GW interface. Sure some things can be moved and resized, but the other half of the windows really can't be messed with. I despise having all of my chat in one window as well, but since combat spam is absent (sadly) I can understand why this is so.
I pretty much keep things in their original place unless I'm so moved to play around with it. I move the target down to just above my hp and power bars, and stretch the exp bar to the length of the hotkeys window.

As for my controls, I've gotten used to a slightly different key config than most. Basic movement keys for me are E, S, D, F, because that's where my hand rests to type. Strafe keys are G and A. I changed my Do it key to V because that's the way I have it in EQ2. Target nearest for me is the ~ key. Kind of a stretch for a small hand, but I am rarely able to just let my hand rest on the keys like I originally planned anyway .

I'm left handed, but I mouse right handed because that's how I learned. I have my skills assigned to the numberpad 1-8. I have the number keys across the top of the keyboard assigned to target party members 1-8, but I'm not a healer, so that doesn't really matter to me. For movement, I have an odd setup. Most everyone uses the arrow keys or WASD, but I use ESDF because the F key has the little notch on it and my index finger normally falls on it from typing. E=forward D=backward S=strafe left F=strafe right. If I want to "turn", I use the mouse and the right mouse button. I have auto-run set to the thumb button on my mouse (5 button intellimouse). With D set as backwards, C is easily accessible for "target closest". I have "tab" set to cycle targets. I haven't found a good setting for my UI yet. Here's how I'm running atm. I'm not happy with it really. I'll probably move the chat box to the bottom left corner and move everything else on the bottom to the right to make room for it.

Deleted the ass-tacular screenshot. I'll edit my later post and add my UI shot there.

Ignore the picture quality. This PC won't save in jpg format and gif butchered it. It still serves its purpose.

What are those icons in the bottom left, next to the menu button?

Spiritofcat, those buttons are the same ones you see in the menu. If you open the menu you will see the icons on the left, you can then just click and hold the left mouse button and drag and drop anywhere you like.

I have a question of my own though. I seen somebody(sorry forgot name now) say something about moving the chat window. Can this be done? I've tried dragging the chat window around, and all I do is end up changing it from transparent to solid background when I click on it. I also would like to have it stay with dark background, as I have a hard time seeing messages against the transparency, but it needs to be moved out of the way to stay dark like that.

I have a question. I'm a primary healer, and I really wish GW had a cycle through type option for your party members as it does for the enemies. Being a healing person, I don't really target the enimies much. I saw the healing gamers that posted are left handed and I couldn't quite do the same as them. I tried to change my spell keys to some letter keys, but then the game took the numbers off of the icons and it just didn't feel right. Any suggestions.

Midnyte, some where in that menu is an option to edit interface. When you click on that you can then move where certain things are on the screen. Good Luck!

How do I get rid of the icons that I have dragged off the menu? I pulled some off just to try it and want to get rid of them and just use the menu or hotkeys.

Can you not simply tap the V key to scroll through party members much the same way you would tap TAB to scroll through enemies?

Drag them onto the "menu" button that looks like a Windows start button and they will disappear.

I suspect that is a third party program like Fraps or something. If not, I'd like to know how you did it as well.

I think "V" only targets the nearest friendly, it won't cycle through them.

To "open" the chat window, click the small icon on the bottom left (see screenshot). If you want to leave it "closed"/"transparent" you will only see the most recent text because everything else fades out after a few seconds. If you want to leave it open and move it, hit the menu button and choose "customize". This will cause all of the UI items to appear and you can then move and resize them all. After you have everything set correctly, hit "save". Unfortunately, the chat window closes every time you change zones and you have to reopen it. I'm hoping they will change it to remain open if you had it open when you zoned.

Ah, I was trying to drag them back onto the open menu, but it always closes when I try that. I'll try your suggestion, that makes perfect sense.

Thank you.

Yep, that worked perfectly. Thanks again!

Thank you Ignotus for the excellent help there. I somehow was missing that customize thing. I knew about the chat button and the menu button, but somehow missed it. Sorry it took a couple days to reply, but I was out of town. Thanks again!

For some ultimatly bizzare reason GW have decided to reverse these as default! (I'd be very interested in the reasoning behind this if anyone wants to venture a guess)

I reccomend changing this straight away, for me it makes a big difference, because its now more in line with other games that I have played and dont have to 'Re-learn' my finger coordination, which comes as second nature.

Its also worth noting that the key next to '1' is not assigned (normally the console key)... I have it assigned to skill '8' which is sprint... a very nice easy to reach key for running emergency.

Also 'F' doesnt seem to be assigned to anything, another valuble key in any game.. this I assign to '7' which is Endure pain... again, nice and close for emergency infusion of health.. along with the quick sprint key I am confident that when snow starts melting I can run to fridge quickly

I dont know about anyone else but I find it difficult to use 'C' as 'target closest'.. as a warrior I need to target closest very often. So I have RE-assigned 'T' to that function.. I'm in the thick of battle, I dont know enough of whats going around me to 'call target' (default command for 'T') thats a rangers job.. so I dont mind loosing that shortcut.

I WISH ... oh how I WISH there was a way of making a Macro so that you dont have to press a key to target, then press space bar to tell snowman to attack, and THEN have to activate a skill... bloody annoying that you need so many button presses just to attack.

at least make a bind for 'target closest' then 'attack'.. pressing one key less in battle will make all the difference.... anyone else agree?

The Snowman
ok.. lets take this form the start..

i use my right mouse button all the time. and that makes A and D strafe keys

i believe the key next to 1 brings up the chat. i'm fine with that. i like how the 1-8 works out with skills

F is target self i think

target calling is for everyone. why would it be ranger exclusive? besides. T makes you select the last called target and attack. ctrl + space is the call target combination

takes me less than 0,1 sec to target next and attack don't think its that big of a deal

This seems to be the best setup for me. It allows me to take notice of things more quickly.

After rearranging my UI many times, I came to this final setup which is very nice:

This setup works very well for me because it keeps all my important information about party health and such in the bottom right hand corner and frees up the entire left side of the screen.

My health, energy, and Xp bars are on top of the Party menu. The skill bar is aligned from top to bottom in a 2x4 box to the left of the Party menu with my single weapon slot next to it. The enemy Hp, effects, and my current skills in effect are above my hp and xp bar.

Spartan2, what's the point of having a single weapon slot? I only have one weapon setup and I just turned the slots of entirely.
Your setup is interesting. I know if I was trying to attack you I'd come at you from behind to the right and hide under all your interface...
