Chapter 1-So It Begins
“Hold Fast!” A voice was heard through the loud noises of flashes, eruptions, storms, cries of suffering, torments of pain. I looked around, crazed in battle, trying to find the direction in which my captain’s voice was coming from.
Since the cry didn’t come a second time, I decided to try my chances with my instincts. I turned west, and ran. Bodies, everywhere. Even without looking, I became sick, smelling the stench of the disgusting corpses, bloodied and dismembered. Suddenly a Charr war band jumped in front of me.
Silently cursing, I raised my Wingblade Sword, sprinting at the Charr Fire Caller. With a power attack, and a seeking blade attack, I severely hurt him. Knowing that time was priceless, I used a Sever Artery adrenaline skill on him, bleeding him slowly to his death. Forgetting about him, knowing his fate, I jumped to the next Charr, an Axe Fiend. Swinging at him with my strongest adrenaline attacks, I quickly disposed of him. The Fire Caller died at that moment, as soon as the Axe Fiend fell.
But a new war band came, three Charr Axe Fiends, a few rangers, and another Fire Caller. I cursed at them aloud, not caring if they heard my vulgar words. I have already lost enough time, and fighting this new war band would issue me no advantage. I turned and ran, sprinting to the place where I theorized that the captain was.
“Damnit!” An arrow caught in my leg, pinning me down. The freaking Charr Ranger had used a pin down skill on me, with his bow. I was moving slowly, but almost there. I could feel the pain, start to go away, and the pin down wearing off. Looking back, I saw the three blasted Axe Fiends coming towards me, way too quickly for my liking. I felt like cussing at them, straight out, but hell, they wouldn’t even understand. Suddenly, the pin down wore off, and I ran away, like a bat out of hell. Turning back, I laughed at them, and gave them a couple of good-hearted verbal curses, as I quickly flew ahead of them.
It was just down this hill, I was close now. Just one more hill. Running up the green hill, which was covered in blood, I stopped at the top.
“No....”
I fell to my knees, beholding the sight below me.
“It...can’t be....”
My whole party was dead on the ground. Every 50 of them. The scout party that had looked for any trace of Charr advancement had died. Save for me.
The captain lied on the ground, seemingly at peace. They all looked as if they were sleeping in peace. They didn’t have any physical wounds, so I figured that they died of Hexes, Spells, or such. I knew that this was my end.
My eyes slowly filled with tears.
Desperation, and anger filled me.
I could see the Great Northern Wall from where I stood. It sat there, unmoving, as if taunting me to reach it’s shelter. It knew that I had found my end in this bleak, bloodied, northern land. It seemed so close, but as it was impossible to reach the gates.
The Charr War bands were clustered by the gates. More than 100 of them in all, as far as my eye could see. 100 Charr blocked my way to safety, blocked my way to warning my King, My city, My people about the invasion.
couldn’t leave on the suicide run, without giving my party a proper leave. I walked down the hill, and kneeled down in front of them, praying for their safety in the rift. With that, I took my sword and thrusted it into the bloodied ground. I threw my shield’s strap over the hilt, leaving both my sword and shield with my fallen comrades.
Looking towards the Great Wall, I closed my eyes, before setting out on the run, through a group of 100 Charrs.

5 Minutes Later
=-=-==-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=
I was close to the gate now. It seemed close. The sound of a HUGE war band could be heard behind me. I dared not look behind me, knowing what I would see. But I couldn’t help myself. Looking behind while I sprinted and ran towards my goal, I spotted the Charr Invasion Force. My count was off. Way off. This wasn’t a group of 100. This was near 1000 strong. And there was only one thing in their path, which was going to the exact same destination that they were. Me.
They may not understand my language, but they knew that they had to stop me, from telling the King of there coming.
And they were intent on doing so.
=--=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=--=-=
3 Minutes Later
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=---=-=-=-=-
I was a few hundred feet ahead of the Charr Force. The gate was extremely close now, only a few more feet now.
“No.....” The steel gate was slammed shut.
I reached it, and screamed, for the King, and for my life.
Screaming for the guards to call the King, I watched helplessly as the Charr came a few feet closer each second.
With beads of sweat running down my forehead, I desperately waited for the king, and watched the Charr come 20 feet closer to me. I wouldn’t last for anymore than a few more minutes.
“You there, Son, What do you need?”
I spun about, and met eyes with the King.
“Sir! Vanatiel, of the 5th party of forward scouts! I have come to inform you that all of our parties have fallen to the Charr! A Charr invasion force 1000 strong is approaching, my King!!! Please! Let me in! I beg of you!!!
The King looked at me solemnly.
“My loyal scout to Ascalon, I cannot let you in. The Force is too close for my liking, and we must close all entrances and exits. I am truly sorry, Vanatiel.”
With that, the King turned, called his guards with him, and left me there.
I watched him go, helplessly.
I knew that death was certain.
The man that I have served, that I have DREAMED of serving all of my life, had just left me to die.
I cursed the man with every word that I knew, every verbal curse under the sun.
I made vows out of anger and hate at that moment, to Grenth.
To which, to this day, I regret.
And I had no hope of survival.
I have left all my weapons with my fallen comrades.
I still composed my honor, for my Ascalon
The king may not be right in his beliefs,
But the People were different
I was going to lead the Charr away, and buy some time, for the future freedom of our people.
I was going to die with my comrades, on the same ground that they themselves had died on.
I ran back to the site, leading the Charr.
And it was there, that I picked up my sword and shield, and fought to my death, falling among my comrades in eternal peace.
Or so I thought.

Capter Two-Vanatiel's Rebirth
When he woke again, it was difficult for his eyes to adjust to the light. It was too bright. He rubbed his eyes and sat up. Again he opened his eyes. It was still too bright. He tried to blink away the brightness, but to no avail. Deciding it was no use to try to adjust he squinted and looked around. White. All around him was neverending white. He closed his eyes again but the brightness simply shone through his eyelids.
When again he opened his eyes, it was dark. A voice echoed through the blackness. "Welcome to your new life, Vanatiel." It said. Firelight came from either side of him lighting a dark figure standing before him. It was cloaked, with its hood over it's head, and it clasped its hands inside its long sleeves. "What are you?" Vanatiel asked. His voice was deeper, but more hoarse, than he remembered it. "I," the thing said, "am your new master. You shall follow in my ways and kneel before my figure." He felt an odd sensastion coming over him. As if the things voice had power over his body, he felt himself kneel. "Yes, master." he said, the words simply coming from his mouth. "Confused are you?" the thing asked. "Yes." he said lifting his head and resting his eyes on the thing. "I have control of you, as I do all of my followers, just like the rest of the Old Gods. Melandru over her rangers and earthly elementalists, Balthazar his warriors, I the Necromancers, Lyssa her Mesmers, and Dawayna commands the rest." "Melandru, Balthazar, Lyssa, Dwayna," he muttered, "You. No....no...." "Yes, my minion," the thing said stepping forward and pulling the hood from his head, "I am Grenth."...
