Songs of Tyria and Cantha
Bear with me, this started off as a spin-off of a set of joke songs I wrote for the Guru staff, and turned serious. The following are 8 songs, 1 a piece dedicated to a specific profession, either about their way of life, or some other related aspect.
As a general rule, I don't like rhyming, because I feel it's a shallow part of poetry and music that draws away from the deeper meaning, so most of them don't do so at all. In fact, only 1 song rhymes.
I tried to borrow from different cultures for the various songs, and I hope it reflects within them.
As to the tunes they go with... Well, they don't. Or at least, I didn't have any in mind when I wrote them.
Any critique is welcome. Except if you insult my favourite ones. Then you die. A painful death. >=\

Warrior:
Strength, Honour, and Valour; The Way of the Warrior
*Chorus
Onto the battlefield, a righteous shout!
Strength, honour, and valour shall light the way.
Weapon in hand, into the fray;
The adrenaline of battle calls us all.
There's no glory in cowardice,
Those who stay on the sidelines mean nothing.
A mighty swing of your weapon topples even mountains.
*Chorus
Balthazar bless the steel I weild,
Tempered by the blood of my foes.
Mercy and magick are for the weak.
Only strength is lasting.
*Chorus
Courageous warriors show no hesitation,
The most powerful foes are no match for your strength.
A mighty swing of your weapon topples even mountains.
Honour, power, skill, and strength,
Courage, and might, forge your spirit.
Weapon in hand, into the fray!
The adrenaline of battle calls us all.

Elementalist:
Fire, Water, Earth, and Air: The Only Truths I've Ever Known
Let those of small mind swing their weapons foolishly,
Let those who lack power find solace in weak subtlety,
Let those who turn their back on magick pluck away at bows,
Let those with feeble spirits resort to protection and healing.
Look all around you and gather your strength; The only truth in life is found in nature.
Fire, Water, Earth, and Air; Devestating beauty existing in perfect balance.
The strength of Fire calls to your anger. Hone your fury and rain it down upon your foes;
The power to set blazes across the plains, and bring down the very stars in the sky.
Let the rage gather in your palms, let the flames fan in your heart;
The blessing of Balthazar turns the mightiest obstacle into ash.
The chill of Water calls to your pain. Hone your sadness and envelope your foes within;
The power to freeze rivers and lakes, and tsunamis that erase the coastline.
Let the coldness gather in your palms, let the despair numb your heart;
The blessing of Grenth captures the only true beauty within ice.
The shock of Air calls to your joy. Hone your lively energy and turn it into lightning;
The power to call forth a tempest, and turn the very heavens to your side.
Let the jubilation gather in your palms, let the exhiliration take hold of your heart;
The blessing of Dwayna embraces us in her brilliant light.
The stability of Earth calls to your patience. Hone your serenity to churn the ground;
The power to shake the foundations of the earth, and engulf your foes in flames of obsidian.
Let the tranquility gather in your palms, let the peace calm your heart;
The blessing of Melandru returns all living things to the earth.
Look all around you and gather your strength; The only truth in life is found in nature.
Fire, Water, Earth, and Air; Devestating beauty existing in perfect balance.

Mesmer:
Lyssa's Mask
Bucket in hand, I did walk to the river,
When an image did catch my eye.
'Twas a bonny young lady in regal attire,
Who happened to be passing me by.
Her skin was of the fairest white,
Her hair a deep and stunning brown,
And when she did pause as I stared,
I almost did fall to the ground.
That girl did turn, and I saw her face,
Adorned with a stylish costume mask,
My eyes did linger as I longed to see behind it,
The job at hand seemed a most disagreeable task.
I set down the bucket and did stare with adoration,
And she did treat me with a lingering second look,
Then did she continue on her way,
The opposite direction from the brook.
So entranced was I that I did follow,
And by her movements she knew it well,
That I did gaze rapturously upon her body,
Lost within her magick spell.
Walk she did, for over a mile,
Stopping only once and when she turned around,
My heart did beat faster, and the sweat did pour,
In her beauty had I drowned.
At a statue of the Goddesses Lyssa she did sit,
And I could do naught but follow her motions,
She looked at me with that masked face,
As if asking me of my devotion.
At last did I speak and to her tell,
"Your beauty is immeasurable, your skin most fair,
You have captivated my heart and mind.
All of this do I swear!"
And to this did she react, moving her hand,
And did remove her mask that I should see,
This was no ordinary girl at all,
But an incarnation of Lyssa's beauty.
She then did vanish as if she had never been,
Gone with nothing left but air.
I had lost my bucket long ago,
Yet somehow I did not care.
And now I sing a song of praise,
To the lustrous beauty Lyssa did possess,
Who captivates men's hearts and minds,
And wanders among humans in regal dress.

Necromancer:
Dirge of Grenth
I look about and see the world, mourning for its loss;
Reality is sugarcoated with lies and ugliness hidden by false beauty.
You can't live on illusion, allowing yourself to be deceived;
Real freedom comes when you shed those feelings.
What dirty lies are told to conceal the truth!
False hope is nothing more than meaningless gratification.
Trapped within a cage, pretending to be free;
Real freedom comes when you shed those feelings.
I want to be loved. I want to feel safe and sheltered. I want to be happy.
But not at the cost of being imprisoned in a web of lies.
Set me loose from these illusory shackles!
Real freedom comes when you shed those feelings.
Grenth guide me, and give me true sight.
Harden my heart to the temptation of illusion.
Let me not be deceived by pretty lies!
Power is the only freedom.
The world is dying, its growth stunted by deception.
Reality is lost, covered in layer after layer of shallow falsities;
People feeding on illusions of bread and wine.
Real freedom comes when you shed those feelings.
What a strange place, where 'beauty' is the only truth!
Locked in the dark so long, the real truth is more brilliant than the sun.
Liberate yourself from the darkness!
Real freedom comes when you shed those feelings.
I want to be held. I want to feel a tender embrace. I want to be happy.
But not at the cost of having my wings clipped off.
Set me loose from these illusory shackles!
Real freedom comes when you shed those feelings.
Grenth guide me, and give me true sight.
Harden my heart to the temptation of illusion.
Let me not be deceived by pretty lies!
Power is the only freedom.

Monk:
Dwayna Bless Us
Blessed be Dwayna,
High upon the Heavens,
Bringer of peace and light.
We call upon thy holy name,
And ask that thee give us thy blessing,
Protect and guide us in these times.
Mend the injured,
Give sight to the blind,
And make whole shattered hearts.
Blessed be Dwayna,
High upon the Heavens,
Goddess most holy.
Forgive us our sins,
As we repent unto thee,
Protect and guide us in these times.
Shelter the lost,
Give food to those who hunger,
And make whole shattered hearts.
Blessed be Dwayna,
High upon the Heavens,
Goddess most holy.
Praise be to Dwayna,
Goddess most divine.
We give praise and worship to thee.
Embrace us in thy holy light,
Comfort us with thy warm embrace,
We give praise and worship to thee.
Blessed be Dwayna,
High upon the Heavens,
Goddess most holy.

Ranger:
Melandru's Tears
The blades of grass tickle my soles.
The musky smell of moist earth is strong.
The calm of the forest rings through my ears.
The wondrous pallette of nature encompasses my vision.
And yet the bitter tang of salty tears fills my open mouth.
Chorus
Man has found a heaven on earth, yet somehow cannot see.
Shedding the lifeblood of the forest to build their own new world,
It withers beneath their fierce determination.
And the rain falls, gently running down my cheeks.
Who mourns for this loss of beauty?
How can they not feel the pain of the trees being felled?
The fear of the animals whose homes have been lost?
And the rain falls, gently running down my cheeks.
Burning, cutting, polluting, destroying,
The sacred land of the forest has been desecrated.
Reason and emotion can not touch the hearts of these savages.
And the rain falls, gently running down my cheeks.
Chorus
The forest is crying, and the rain runs gently down my cheeks.
I want to reach out and embrace Melandru,
But the sacred ground has been soiled,
And She shies away from my touch.
The blades of grass tickle my soles.
The musky smell of moist earth is strong.
The calm of the forest rings through my ears.
The wondrous pallette of nature encompasses my vision.
And yet the bitter tang of salty tears fills my open mouth.

Ritualist:
Spirit Song
I had a dream the other night;
Cherry blossoms fell into a pond.
The silver moon lit the sky,
A lone lantern hanging on the tree.
I hear a faint whisper in my ear;
The spirits' voices carry on the wind.
I had a dream the other night;
A great phoenix rose from the horizon,
A rainbow was painted across the sky,
A lone rush growing from the river.
I feel a faint caress on my face;
The spirits' touch transcends time and space.
I had a dream the other night;
A lone maiden dressed all in white,
Rang a bell within the shrine,
A lone sound breaking the silence.
I hear a faint whisper in my ear;
The spirits' voices carry on the wind.
The spirits call to those who'll listen,
Their messages transcend time and space.
In my dreams they speak to me,
And so I listen attentively.
I had a dream the other night;
I saw my ancestors in a line.
They spoke to me, one by one,
The lone person on the other side of the river.
I feel a faint caress on my face;
The spirits' touch transcends time and space.
===
Assassin:
Oath of an Assassin
Daggers of steel in my hands,
Carve flesh and bone until my foes have fallen,
Strike with precision and cut them down.
Drink the blood and grow stronger, my blades.
Target in sight, there's no turning back.
Failure is never an option, one of us must die.
On my honour, so I swear;
This is the Oath of an Assassin.
Dance with grace, daggers in hand,
Do not misstep and your foes shall fall.
When you see an opening, do not hesitate,
Spill their blood upon the ground.
Family and friends I have not,
My emotions have been locked away.
On my honour, so I swear;
This is the Oath of an Assassin.
Each dagger is a part of yourself,
Let them move without thought;
Like a reflex, strike their weak spot.
And the blood shall pour like rain.
There is no room for mistake.
Failure is never an option, one of us must die.
On my honour, so I swear;
This is the Oath of an Assassin.

Eulogy in Fire
Gwen's Theme
Children playing in the streets,
The sound of a flute off in the distance.
A tattered cape lies on the ground;
It doesn't matter, it will all be ash in the end.
Titan gods, here my plea,
Fill me with the power of fire.
I will be a vessel for your anger,
Searing away the imperfections of life.
Images of those I knew,
Turn to ash and blow in the wind.
Lost within the pain of betrayal,
The flames of hatred consume me.
Innocence, like a small flower on the ground,
Trampled by the lust of men.
Mother, I wish that I could mourn for you,
But my heart is already filled with hate.
Shamans of Charr, cleanse me now,
Fill me with your ancient magick.
I will be a vessel for your anger,
Searing away the imperfections of life.
Images of those I knew,
Turn to ash and blow in the wind.
Lost within the pain of betrayal,
The flames of hatred consume me.
Emptiness is the only feeling,
As nobody stopped to help.
Standing there I could only watch,
Staring at her lifeless body.
People of Ascalon, hear my oath,
Your actions will always be remembered.
I will be a vessel of burning power,
And sear away your imperfect life.
Images of those I knew,
Turn to ash and blow in the wind.
Lost within the pain of betrayal,
The flames of hatred consume me.
===
Short explanation, since not everyone will get it.
This song is a sort of image/theme song for the Gwen we met in the BWE's. Basically, in the song, it says that Gwen's mother was raped and killed by unknown people, and Gwen blamed everyone for it, if not for failing to save her mother, then for doing nothing to help her either.
Thus, Gwen came to ally with the Charr, becoming a human vessel to channel the power of the Titans, bringing forth the Searing and destroying Ascalon, and she wants nothing more than to kill all people.
It's disturbing, but I think it fits that Gwen rather well. I hope you enjoy it.

Purple Maiden, Green Frog
Gaile and Frog Theme Song
[Spoken]
Narrator:
Long ago, there was a Ranger Maiden dressed all in purple.
She was kind and gave the people hope, sometimes even a glimpse of what the future held.
And then there was, The Frog, a kindly amphibian,
As wise and gifted a speaker as the Maiden...
Gaile:
Excuse me, but do you mind if we cut this short?
You're making it a bit boring.
Frog:
Though I would not otherwise say it in so few words,
I am afraid I must agree...
Narrator:
Wait... What? Does this mean I'm fired?
Gaile+Frog:
Yes... Why, I do believe it does!
Narrator:
<Grumbles>
Gaile:
Ok girls, cue the music!
Frog:
Lights, camera, action!
[Sung]
Gaile:
She's the cutest ranger you ever did see,
A voice that's sweeter than honey,
Who is this maiden, purple as can be,
Oh wait... it's me!
Frog:
Green and small as he may be,
He comes to you from eternity,
With wisdom of those who serve, you see,
Oh wait... It's me!
Gaile+Frog:
We serve those from high up above,
Who shower Tyria with love, love, love.
Bringing you magick, and this kicking melody,
All without a single subscription fee!
Gaile:
Now you may know me from forums near and far,
As community relations go, I'm kind of a star.
Interviews, public notes, wherever they are,
Give it up to Frog on the guitar!
[Guitar Solo]
Frog:
To Tyria do other worlds pale,
They don't have me! That equals instant fail.
Out of nowhere, in Lion's Arch I sneak you the details,
Let's here it for the drum-playing Gaile!
[Drum Solo]
Gaile+Frog
And there you have it, that's us, more or less,
We really do try to give it our best!
When you're feeling confused, please remember this,
We are here for your sake, we really do exist!
Gaile+Frog:
We serve those from high up above,
Who shower Tyria with love, love, love.
Bringing you magick, and this kicking melody,
All without a single subscription fee!
[Spoken]
Narrator
Oh... Dwayna... Somebody shoot me...
Gaile
... You know, I think that could be arranged
Frog
Security! Take this blasphemer away!
===
Note: This is supposed to be a sort of parody, caricature, and just plain silly song. Sweet enough to make some people wretch, downright wrong enough to offend Gaile and The Frog, and Disney-esque enough to make people wonder.

Note: POTENTIAL SPOILERS FROM EARLY CHAPTER ONE IN THE LATTER 2 SONGS
Flowers, Flute, and Cape
Gwen's Theme
Some say that the world's an oyster,
With a pearl ripe for the taking.
But I believe that it's a flower,
Delicate, yet resilient beauty.
Sometimes people hurt each other,
Trampling them down into the dust.
Like the sweet little flower,
They will simply get back up again.
To this world that is like a flower,
I want to be the sun and the rain.
Enveloping all in my warm rays,
And nourishing all with my tender drops.
Some take up arms to serve their country,
Yet shall I take up a flute.
I believe that the power of music,
Is mightier than both pen and sword.
Sometimes people hurt each other,
Trampling them down into the dust.
Like music, a wondrous noise,
Can cut through even the darkest night.
To this world that can be devoid of meaning,
I want to fill the emptiness.
Music of my heart and soul,
Let there be no more suffering.
Some heroes wear a distinctive emblem,
But I want to don a pure red cape.
Like a legend of another world,
Trying separates hopes and dreams.
Sometimes people hurt each other,
Trampling them down into the dust.
I want to be there when they fall,
Waiting with my arms outstretched.
To this world that is cold and lonely,
I want to offer something dear to me.
Though it was a gift from someone special,
Wear on your back this pure red cape.
===
Before All Else, Serve Thy People
Rurik's Theme
The world has much changed since I was a child,
In many, many, more ways than one.
As it becomes bleaker, and the challenges greater,
I've found that I've had to grow.
"Before all else, serve thy people."
Someone once told this to me.
And this lesson I would soon learn well,
As Althea was lost to me.
I wanted to submit to grief and despair,
But the eyes of the people gazed upon me.
I saw in them a hope, and dependance,
And understood the responsibility I bore.
"Before all else, serve thy people."
These simple words I spoke to my father.
Yet in arrogance he had become blind,
And turned his back on their needs.
I wanted to submit to his fatherly will,
But the eyes of the people gazed upon me.
I saw in them a battle-weary fatigue,
And understood the responsibility I bore.
"Before all else, serve thy people."
These simple words were the last I gasped,
As I drew my final breath in the living world.
Before I met Althea's embrace, I prayed for their safety.
===
A Love Beyond Death's Reach
Althea's Theme
It was convenient that I should love you,
The daughter of a beloved Duke.
And though I took my duty in stride,
It seemed that it could be nothing more.
You were like a child among men,
With nothing but a youthful passion.
In the shadow of our great King,
And you could not compare to my father.
The Searing fell upon Ascalon,
I could not afford to delay my duty any longer.
And even so, in your eyes I began to see,
The fierce passion of a true man.
As I turned on the stunning full force of my charm,
And flirted with you to cement our relationship,
I could not tell at the time, but it began to change,
And this faux-love became something more real.
Like a seed in a garden, nurtured and given time to grow,
I could not tell it was nestled beneath my chest.
Then, just before I was struck down by the Charr,
It blossomed into a perfect flower.
I could finally return a flawless love,
Yet I had died and entered the realm of spirits.
And even so, beyond death,
This love persevered.
A love beyond the reach of death,
Greater than the divide between two worlds.
And finally, together once again,
Our love has become complete.

Very nice. I especially like the Elementalist's. I decided to make up a song of my own, although it's really my first try.
I personally think that rhyming makes a song more...well, I don't know what word to put. Anyway, I like rhymes in my songs. Well, here goes...
Dwarven Song
Hey, ho, glasses ‘round!
Clink ‘em once, then drink it down!
With a chop of an axe and the swingin’ of swords,
This is the song of the Shiverpeak Dwarves!
We go to hunt with yaks in tow,
Swingin’ axes through the snow.
Stone Summit fiends had better fear
When Shiverpeak’s Dwarves are getting near!
Some people think us drunken fools,
Daily sitting at our stools.
When time is right, we’ll see who’s best
When Dwarven might is put to test!
Hey, ho, glasses ‘round!
Clink ‘em once, then drink it down!
With a chop of an axe and the swingin’ of swords,
This is the song of the Shiverpeak Dwarves!
